Arguably better Man-o’-War, we knew this day would come. Loses the ability to bounce your own things in exchange for being able to drop this down with no drawback. Human creature type is also relevant for those who have humans matters cards.
I don't think it's better as bouncing your own creatures is a real application (maybe not the main, but it has been done plenty) and playing it out onto a dead board seems just as if not more niche, but it's definitely awesome and I'm definitely excited to run it.
I'm not completely convinced it's better than the old Man, but that may just be nostalgia talking. Bouncing your creatures is definitely tech, and I enjoy upsides that are occasionally downsides.
Regardless of being iconic, I might keep the older card just for aesthetic reasons. It isn't really a great example of Visions era art, but it still looks a whole lot better than this generic human.
Eh, I don't think this is clearly better or worse than Man-o'-War. I'll probably stick with the original just because the chance to bounce your own stuff is the kind of sweet play I want to see in cube.
I feel like Ye Olde Jellyfish is still better than this. I prefer the possibility of bouncing my own guys and the drawback of not having a "may" doesn't come up much. That said, I love this effect on a body and will happily run this alongside Man-O-War. Even though I'm not really feeling the art on this guy.
I've recently cut Man-o-War due to how rarely it actually made people's maindecks, and although this is better at being dropped on an empty board and equipped, I'm pretty sure this still won't make its way in. Just a few months too late buddy.
Man-O-War is sticking for me, partly for the corner value case and partly for art / nostalgia reasons. We play it all the time in tempo decks.

Seems weird they limited it to you opponents creatures, is it just so you don't have to bounce your own guys if they have nothing? A simple may could have done that and made it feel a bit cleaner.
It's a no for me since I'm not running Man-o'-War at the minute and this, for me, is worse.
Probably slightly worse than Man-o'-War for my playgroup, but overall it's a wash. MoW is still a strong cube card, and has never been anywhere near the chopping block for me, so this card will very likely find a home right alongside it.

The targeting restriction is 100% because this guy and Naban, Dean of Iteration would've made for a solid combo in Standard if he could bounce himself.

I doubt that was the reason.
Naban is basically unplayable in standard with the current wizard suite out there..
a combo that requires two bad/medium cards, can be broken up by any cheap removal spell and is straight up dead against control, isn’t worthy of a nerf.
I think it’s more likely for humans in modern. Think of how good this would be with aether vial. Protect your guys, reset meddling mage, re-play Thalia’s lieutenant etc.
Re:thread , I’m guessing it’s very slightly worse than man o war from my experiences. I’ve bounced my own creatures for value more often than wanting to run out man o war as a vanilla 2/2, and generally the upside of doing so is larger.
However, tribal synergies make it selectively better. Ie if you a human sub theme.
The real reason is probably more due to gameplay and how newer players miss that Man-O-War can target itself. Nothing turns you off from a game more than losing due to confusion. The 'may' is probably not in there in case you have opportunities to miss click online in MTGA and MODO. Two different but real gameplay problems in terms of learning curve, which is MODO's most important demographic to target.
You can template it “you may return target creature to their owners hand”.
Not talking about the mandatory bounce, just opponent specific clause.
The problem arises when you lose a game on MODO to misclicking both your own creature and the 'yes' for answering the may clause. With things like wi-fi lag and whatever else could be locally or server side, that's an easy thing to account for on something that will be drafted + played every time it shows up in a pack and is relevant across two softwares.
Like probably everyone else, I play the jellyish, and I don't think they're either-or. In smaller cubes, you can probably only have one. In larger cubes, though, why not both?
FWIW, Aether Adept is still potentially relevant because the UU in its cost is good if you support blue devotion.

Aether Adept and Venser, Shaper Savant can lock down an opponent where Exclusion Mage is still only a strong one-shot effect.
Exclusion Mage is still a nice addition. Overall: Man-o'-War>Exclusion Mage>Aether Adept
