I got to play this card a few times in the Arena Cube and I've been pretty happy with it.
The body has been great against all the X/1 aggressive small creature decks in the format and I've played it for its offspring cost more than once in the mid to late game when both players are just top decking.
Thundertrap Trainer is a card that I’ve like since it got shown in BLB as an effect that blue decks had wanted for a while, as a consistent “Wall of Omens” (although I don’t think the namesake is even that good anymore, power-level wise.) It’s been filling the role pretty well by being a roadblock that sometimes trades with an aggro dork that usually draws a card, and drawing two late in the game. During preview/testing season, the impression that I got was that Thundertrap “drew” one as often as being “kicked”, but not that much more often, although when I’ve been seeing it in the trenches now, it’s more often “unkicked.”
Yep - I've found this is a great late game and early game play.
There were two interesting games I had with this on MTGA:
- I stormed off with Displacer Kitten flickering this to gain extra spells
- I've cast this for the kicker cost out of control decks where this became a huge 3 for 1 that just won the game.
I've haven't had too much success with 5 CMC blue spells - Mystic Confluence / Smirking Spelljacker as I've found cube has become way too fast for these cards to be effective.

I've really like this package of scalable blue spells - Lórien Revealed / Wan Shi Tong, Librarian / Quantum Riddler / Overlord of the Floodpits / Occult Epiphany.
