Talia, Guardian of Thraben meets Eidolon of the Great Revel in black.
The result is a cheap, splashable first striker that pushes damage efficiently and threatens decks that run less creatures.
Sure, OG Thalia is stronger since it delays noncreature spells instead of punishing them, but I'd say I'm still intrigued by this card and its potential for aggressive decks. Plus black is a different story when it comes to 2 drops, so it could be easier to make space for it.
I think this card is perfect for cube in several ways:
- Eidolon effect is great at punishing slower decks with pushing damage.
- The first strike is great against agro mirrors AND it pairs well with Lightning Strike style effects to push based x/4 creatures.
Definitely a strong aggro card. It's important to note that the effect is symmetrical. As a hatebear I'm not too interested in this for my cube at the moment considering I want to help spell based decks, not hurt them. Not to mention that I've recently cut Thalia. Storm is pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to combo decks that need to be checked. Deep-Cavern Bat / Kitesail Freebooter are more useful for my usecase in terms of being better vs Flash / Reanimator / initiative.
I dont see a point in running this unless you just hate decks with few creatures. Ive found that the creature strategies are the strongest. Hating out control decks is not something I want to be doing.
Flavor/UB aside, I don’t like this card for the reasons mentioned. I agree that this punishes low creature count decks effectively, but I’m not in need of a check on those strats, especially in black with its angle of hand disruption. If this were green, I think I’d look at it differently.
I would love to have an Eidolon of the Great Revel with a single colored pip in red (no, Magebane Lizard is not it). In black though, I'm not nearly as interested.
