I'm a student and am able to keep purchasing cards from the new sets without losing all my money. Why? Because I sell cards that I don't use. Now there's an initial cost to build the cube, but once you have it the money isn't much of an issue if you just "recycle" the cards. Now if for whatever reason you can't sell the cards, then I suppose there's an issue.
Edit: I also generally don't buy the cards right away, more often than not it's a good idea to wait a month or two after the release. That way the prices cool down. This isn't always true though, and it's hard decision to make sometimes, i.e. Teferi Hero of Dominaria is much more expensive now than at release.
Winds of Abandon in for Journey to Nowhere: I think being able to be a 2cmc removal spell and 6cmc sweeper is going to be a good swap for Journey.
Deep Forest Hermit in for Biogenic Ooze: Biogenic Ooze played well, and I was happy with it, but it is nowhere near Deranged Hermit, and this looks like it may be Green's best 5-drop.
Soulherder in for The Grand Calcutron: Calcutron is an amazing maindeck card in one specific deck and an amazing sideboard card against one specific deck. In other situations, it's pretty bad. Soulherder looks very strong in my cube, especially with Clocknapper, so I'm willing to swap out the narrow card for this.
10 Talismans in/10 signets out: Did a few Vintage cubes on MTGO recently and ran into some of the situations where signets' weaknesses shine. It was a good reminder to help solidify this swap for me.
Curse of Chains in for Angel of Invention: Trying to balance my hybrid section, this seems like okay removal, and Angel of Invention isn't a huge loss.
Scarscale Ritual in for Anticipate: I really don't like this swap, but need a UB hybrid, and Nightveil Specter doesn't really feel like a hybrid since I doubt it'd see much play in a Temur or Abzan deck. One-shot Skullclamp seems reasonable? I don't know.
Firespout in for Bonfire of the Damned: This kind of feels like cheating on the hybrid section since I don't think it'll see maindeck in decks not in both red and green, but my green section doesn't want Tattermunge Maniac, so this is probably the best option I have at the moment.
Day of Judgment in for Terminus: I like Miracles with Mystical Tutor, Scroll Rack, and Jace TMS, and I'm still including those enablers, but it's probably better to include the card that's always cmc4 over the card that is sometimes cmc1.
Incubation Druid in for Rattleclaw Mystic: I've been impressed by Incubation Druid in the MTGO Vintage cube, so I'm trying the swap here. Incubation Druid is also neat with Good-Fortune Unicorn/Rhythm of the Wild.
I have to echo my thanks to the cube community that has been my friends in cube-kind since Innistrad. This will be the last include and testing thread so I figured I better chime in even though my cubing has dried up after I moved to Ireland. Anyway....
Canopy Lands: Definitely good enough for any size but at 450 or less it means pulling some man lands. The blue ones are most exciting to me.
Prismatic Vista: Slam Dunk. Kinda Gross this is a special set rare and will be expensive. But this is a cube card forever. Deep Forest Hermit: I have always wanted another deranged hermit, just didn't think it would be another green one. Hexdrinker : Even more than Warden of the First Tree, it is a one drop that can just take over a game. Level up cards are some of favorite ever. Good early and good late. It could even be better that Student of Warfare or Figure of Destiny which is nutzo. seasoned pyromancer : I really like it but don't know if it is really better than a rabblemaster clone or feldon. We'll see
In black we got Plague Engineer and Yawgmoth. Both seem good enough along different axis. The first is really lame against control while Yawgmoth takes some deal of set up. If I get one he'l replace whip of Erebos for a while but the whip is something really special and a pet card of mine.
The swords are fine to me but I already felt 5 was too many at 450. Maybe the new ones will give me the impetus to just pick the best 3-4. I don't like how flukey the protection works in cube so I was hoping the next epic equipment would be different but .... beggars can't be choosers.
Dark horse for me is Mist-Syndicate Naga: 3 Mana to get 2 3/1 and return Snapcaster to my hand? Sounds like magical Christmas land but I have my eye on this.
My cube will starting making it's way to 450 soon but is at 405 right now.
Lands:
Canopy Cycle - Not going to cut anything. Probably just add for now and be at 410. I am not sure what I am going to do about uneven amounts of mana fixing right now. I don't think I am going to cut any manlands though for these. and just be a little off balance for a bit and see how it plays out.
Prismatic Vista - pithing Needle. I have three of these effects, Phyrexian Revoker is strapped to a body which I like, and Sorcerous Spyglass is easier to use. I often cube with people who don't know all the cards and so having the option to look at the opponents hand makes this card much more playable for them. 3 of these effects always seems like 1/2 card to many at my cube size.
Not sure if these will be my cut's for sure, but it's what I am currently contemplating. GGGGG Deep Forest Hermit > Kalonian Hydra - not sure what to say, but this really makes me hope they print a 4 drop that is squirrel themed good enough for cube. Even if it is a master of the wild hunt variant that creates 2 1/1 squirrel's would be really fun to have a small squirrel tribal.
HexDrinker > Sylvan Advocate. once I get closer to 450 I am going to add more Green aggro support back in and Sylvan Advocate will come back in at that time.
RRRRR
Seasoned Pyromancer > Hanweir Garrison These cards feel close to me, but pyromancer feels like he can still support an aggo plan, while also contributing to the beat down plan. With the recent addition of Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin I think having a card that might be slightly worse in the beat down plan, but has more utility overall is a worthwhile trade.
BBBBB - this is probably the hardest section for me to find cut's. I just like all the black cards. This is the change I am thinking right now though.
Force of Despair - going to keep an eye on this one. It may find a place, especially if we continue to get armies in a can.
Falkenrath has the weakness of only being able to discard a single card, which sometimes is all you need, but if your reanimate creature is removed, it can be rough trying to assemble the combo again. The more aggressive decks around here don't use it as much. I really like the card design wise, but alas... As far as Spawn of Mayhem over strike leader I really like giving black some aggressive options with a good density of flyers. I considered Vampire Nighthawk for a while, but having multiple flyers that can hit, and with life gain being pretty scarce in black is really important.
As far as Yawgmoth goes, he seems to be able to do so many different things that cutting a 187 creature for him seemed ok to do. the 187's are all so fun, but increasing the variety of threats is a trade I am willing to make.
UUUUU Urza, Lord High Artificer > Arcane Savant Arcane Savant is always fun, but is awkward when you play sealed, and it seems like every time someone picks this, 1/2 through the draft you forget about it, and realize you should have been considering cards that are off color. I will probably hold off on this one for $ reasons, and to make sure he finds a home and doesn't just spin wheels.
WWWWW Winds of Abandon > going to keep an eye on this. In theory I like Declaration in stone more but I will see how it does for others. Force of Virtue > also going to keep an eye on this. My cube doesn't have any anthems right now that are not strapped to a creature. being able to get highly aggressive with this might make it really playable. This may have to wait until I hit 450 though.
WUBGR Wrenn and Six > Sarkhan Vol - I will miss the last Fires support card in cube for now, but Sarkhan Vol, while up to this point my favorite RG PW, the haste ability always felt like I only ever wanted to pay 3 mana for him. In terms of cube design, they really needed to give Wren his first ability and ultimate, and a static, creatures you control gain haste.
Ultimately I think Wren will become a cube staple, at least for cubes with a land matter / Fetches go. The ability to go up to 4 loyalty on turn 2 is really powerful. The only cards in my cube that can take him down on turn 3 by themselves are Wild Mongrel / Noose Constrictor (and discarding 2 cards).
Hexdrinker
- This card is a MONSTER. It's so easy to hit his ultimate by turn 5 or after whatever turn you topdeck it. Once it reaches its Thrun mode, that means it's near impossible to blow it out while leveling it up further since it has protection from instants. The level up being colorless means Hexdrinker is splashable is also really dumb. It's also not too hard to Upheaval, cast Hexdrinker and get it to Thrun mode next turn.
Wrenn and Six
- I only cast it once, but it recurred a fetchland when I was stuck on GG for the first few turns and stabilized my mana. Recurring a fetchland + picking off a Nekrataal was very good value for a 2 mana planeswalker. The past 3 decks I drafted with MH1 all featured some sort of Crucible / Loam type cards, Modern Horizons is making these types of cards much more consistent.
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
- I saw Yawgmoth singlehandedly make a huge comeback and completely take over a game. Unfortunately the player ended up losing before he could win because his opponent went EOT activate Quicksilver Amulet into Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.
Giver of Runes
- Pretty much everything you'd expect from a mom that can't protect herself. Protection from colorless is very clutch when it matters, especially against something like Wurmcoil Engine.
Winds of Abandon
- Saw it only cast once and it was with Overload. IMO the overload should've cost more, 6 mana Plague Wind on a modal card is really dumb especially when OG Plague Wind costs 9.
Plague Engineer
- I never actually got to cast it, but I just realized that it also works as a nice disruptor to Kiki-Twin since it outright kills Pestermite / Combat Celebrant and leaves Deceiver Exarch with 0 power.
Prismatic Vista / Talismans / Canopies
- Not much to say here, but it's really nice to be able to play turn 2 Talisman into something else more often. Also more decks having access to Canopies really helps with pacing.
Here are my includes and goodbyes to the platform as well. Gonna miss MTGS, I might not have been too active replying all the time, but I was reading everything especially on spoiler time and thinking of what to include from new sets.
Have to say Modern Horizons was amazing for Cube - they definitely had cube in mind while making the set. Very cool.
Giver of Runes
- Pretty much everything you'd expect from a mom that can't protect herself. Protection from colorless is very clutch when it matters, especially against something like Wurmcoil Engine.
The protection from colorless was relevant in multiple games I've seen her played in. From my limited testing it seems that the gap between giver of runes and mother of runes is smaller than I first estimated, because of the colorless clause. I thought there was a good chance I'd cut her, now I think there's a good chance I'll keep her.
My initial impressions of this set are,
-All the mythic rares that look incredible ARE incredible if not better. Hexdrinker, Urza, Yawgmoth, Seasoned Pyromancer have all done very impressive things.
-The only card that has been worse than I predicted is wrenn and six, NOT because it's bad, but because it's a bit more narrow than I thought. We kept not main decking it due to lack of ways to get lands in graveyard.
-The card that has impressed me the most relative to my expectations is Plague Engineer. It's almost always found targets to kill, and the body has been relevant. I don't think it's better than the four cards I mentioned earlier, but it's still an absurd card.
White Winds of Abandon > Soul Snare
At first I wasn't too excited but slightly over costed removal that doubles as aone sided wrath for 6 is hard to pass up. Giving them the last is going to suck but I think(/hope)a lot of times I cast this They don't necessarily have a follow up way to use that extra land. I have missed cards like this in teh past for playing better than they look.
Blue Mist-Syndicate Naga > Kefnet the Mindful
Seems like a sin card for tempo or anything going wide. I dont know if it will last but I have wanted Kefnet out for a while.
Black Plague Engineer > Not 100% on the cut yet
Just seems like great value, since he trades with most creatures in combat you only need one target for the -1/-1 to make this a solid 2-for-1. I wasn't so hot on this guy at first but I have came round after positive reviews.
Red
Nothing yet
Green Hex Drinker > Haven't decided if I'm cutting a big or a small creature for this.
Seems amazing tome even though I have no green agro. It's a 1 beater drop that is also a decent top deck even late into the game.
Deep Forest Hermit > No cut yet
Another (arguably better) version of one of my favorite green 5s? Sign me up. I am going to try both hermits in hopes of hermit decks becoming a thing.

I did a review when Modern Horizons came out here.

Good-Fortune Unicorn in for Rishkar, Peema Renegade: Without Biogenic Ooze, there's a lot less argument for Rishkar. I've been happy with Persist combo with Rhythm of the Wild, so I'm willing to double-down here.
Murderous Redcap in for Skinrender: more double-down on Persist.
Curse of Chains in for Angel of Invention: Trying to balance my hybrid section, this seems like okay removal, and Angel of Invention isn't a huge loss.

Echo of Eons -> Commit // Memory
Plague Engineer -> Ruin Raider
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician -> Gonti, Lord of Luxury
Seasoned Pyromancer -> Hanweir Garrison
Deep Forest Hermit -> Biogenic Ooze
Hexdrinker -> Great Oak Guardian
Wrenn and Six -> Domri, Anarch of Bolas (Domri didn't last for long!)
Sword of Truth and Justice -> Sword of War and Peace
Sword of Sinew and Steel -> Sword of Light and Shadow
Prismatic Vista -> Yasova Dragonclaw (making my rainbow section smaller)
Silent Clearing -> Fetid Heath
Waterlogged Grove -> Yavimaya Coast
Sunbaked Canyon -> Battlefield Forge
Nurturing Peatland -> Llanowar Wastes
Fiery Islet -> Cascading Bluffs
Non Modern Horizons changes making at the same time:
Ash Barrens -> Gemstone Mine
Life from the Loam -> Seasons Past
All sections got something exciting to try out.

Wrenn and Six was busted. I had it along with two fetches, Strip Mine, Raging Ravine, Smokestack, and Burning of Xinye, and it closed out a couple games. However, it did lose one game to a Phyrexian Revoker.
Seasoned Pyromancer was maindecked and helped its owner fix his draws. The tokens were useful for playing around my Smokestack and clogging the ground, but the deck did not have sufficient synergy (Judith, Goblin Bombardment, etc.) - with proper payoffs, I can see the card affecting games much more than it did against my Ilharg - Avenger of Zendikar combo.
Winds of Abandon was maindecked, but I never saw it cast.

Why don’t you do MH1 instead of M20? The latter is not even a quarter as interesting
