EDIT: FALSE ALARM, MTGSALVATION IS NO LONGER CLOSING
Hello fellow members of the MTGSalvation cube community,
Beginning July 8th, 2019, MTGSalvation will be closing its doors and will enter a “read only” mode, where all our past content can continue to be read and linked to. Threads, articles, decks, and posts will continue to all be available, but nothing new will be able to be posted or created.
“Where does the MTGS cube community go from here?”
As a moderator and member of our beloved cube community, I want to do everything I can to keep us connected as possible. While MTGSalvation is probably the biggest and oldest pillar in the cube community, there are still plenty of other options where many cube aficionados congregate on the internet.
IMO, the best kept secret in the cube community by far. Moderated by yours truly, the Xmage Cube Group is a thriving online group that regularly hosts online drafts using our own cubes via Xmage.
We have an archive of over 400 decks that went 3-0 in our tournaments
There’s plenty of daily cube discussion on Reddit’s r/mtgcube sub-reddit. Once MTGS is down, this will probably be the go-to place for discussion during spoiler season.

(#mtgcube)
Follow the #mtgcube Twitter hashtag for all the latest cube discussion on Reddit!
The MTGS staff members are working on a new site to succeed MTGSalvation. As Ulka and I receive more information, we will notify everybody on Discord / Reddit / Twitter, so be sure to be subscribed to those outlets!
As a personal note, I just want to say thank you to everybody who has made this community awesome. I remember feeling really burnt out of Magic. I was strictly playing Legacy and retail limited at the time, and other formats such as EDH / Modern / Standard never appealed to me. Once I heard of cube, I was hooked. Somehow I found my way to MTGS and I’m pretty sure I read the entire This or That thread in a week or something.
I truly do believe that cube is the greatest Magic format of all time, and a large part of that is because of the dedication that cube owners put into their cubes and to the community. How many people do you know have their own cubes compared to those that maintain constructed / EDH decks? We are a rare breed amongst Magic players, a niche community within a niche community. It’s been an honor sharing my passion for this format with you all on this forum, the dedication everybody has put into every little detail of their cube(s) has been nothing but an inspiration to me.
Really awful news. Though I'm active on Reddit, its sub doesn't come close to matching the great discussion and debate that happens here. I hope we're all able to find a suitable place to keep the community active.
Thanks for everything guys! I'll just be posting my cube-related content on Twitter for the foreseeable future.
Good times and a lot of history on this site. It's a shame. I'll really miss this community!
Thanks for everything, and as always, cheers, and happy cubing!
I'll have to follow you on Twitter (and start using Twitter lol). I love your top 20 articles. Any reason you don't want to use Reddit?
As a general statement, I use the mtgcube subreddit and this site for cubing discussion. No question, this community is my preferred one as it's stricter on card evaluations and doesn't get caught up in the moment. That said, if many of us start using the mtgcube subreddit, I believe we can help the community evolve and foster a new environment similar to this one.
Man, I know more and more old forums have been shutting down lately, but this one stings. For all that I enjoy Reddit, it’s hard to maintain a real sense of community there, and there are few things I enjoy less than shouting into the void on Twitter. I’d love to stick together as best we can, so I’ll definitely be checking out that Discord.
I don't use Discord because I find it awkward to jump into a out of an ongoing conversation at any given moment. It's nice for 'this or that?' type questions, but it's hard to really get into theory crafting and those sorts of discussions.
I occasionally post on Reddit and check the /r/mtgcube subreddit, but honestly I find it hard to follow a lot of the conversations on Reddit, especially multiple people are responding to each other.
So I guess I'll just have to pay extra attention to the Twitter-sphere and hope that something succeeds MTGS so this cube community can continue to thrive.
Really sad news. Thanks to everyone who ever offered advice or friendly debate here. It's been a big part of my life for close to 13 years now. I appreciate each and every one of you.
That is too bad. I wonder if we could host a similar form on manaburn.org? It's slowly becoming as good or better than cube tutor. I reached out to him and let's see if we get a response. I also found a few tools that allow for website forums to be easily generated. They cost a little bit to use as a monthly fee which is out of my budget right now, but it could be a start. If we want to make this happen, I am sure we can find a way to find a place. I really like having forums that are easy to search, and have old information on them compared to say reddit, where after 1 week the thread seems to get lost for ever and is way less organized.
Edit: Update So Far. Manaburn said they would be willing to do it if there is some value to it. Doesn't mean he will, if it's a place you would like to move the forums, maybe comment below to show your support of the community?
Well this sucks. I have learned a ton about cube design and card valuation from you all. I was hoping to participate in a project rank everything after Modern Horizons but I'm not sure it is viable without this forum. I joined the discord, but it would be nice to have a forum of sorts. Is Riptide Lab still a thing? I'll keep checking in to see if we find a good place to go en masse.
Wow I started my Cube journey here in 2011... Been gleaning wonderful info and opinions from the fine people here for years. Extremely sad to see this happen.
I am willing to launch and host a forum and keep hosting for those interested in trying to carry the Cube Community over. I would need some help from anyone interested in helping moderate. But I have had a domain name for a while that I was going to kickstart something on and I would be happy to try and get a Cube community together on a forum.
Anyone interested, feel free to PM me.

The admins and some senior staff are in the process of creating a replacement for MTGSalvation that isn't ready to launch quite yet, but is in process and will have a Cube discussion forum. I can't provide too much more information now, as:
a) it isn't ready, and
b) I'll be stepping down to a local mod role so have been less active in forming it.
It should be a similar structure to the existing forum, albeit without all the history.
Curious to see how this turns out. I follow many of your on twitter, which is great, and I'm semiactive on the reddit cube community. I know there are many who are apprehensive about reddit, but as someone who used to feel that way, I can say that it's not nearly as rough as it's made out to be.

I guess I'll probably move to the new site when it comes up. I hope the community maintains some cohesion.
I haven't been active on this forum for that long, but I've enjoyed being an outlier. Even if my cube design philosophy is very different from most of the community, my sense of how cubes are put together, and where to challenge that has been improved.
I hope we can hop over to the new forum as a relatively intact community. I’ll miss conversing with all of the familiar faces... er avatars every spoiler season. You guys are the reason I built my cube back in 2010 and there is no way dischord/reddit/Twitter will be able to replicate the breadth and depth of discussion that we have here.
This is pretty disappointing - Reddit doesn't do a good job of keeping threads going beyond a day or so (and you definitely can't necro threads / keep long histories that serve as good archives) and Discord / social are too real-time for the kind of community we keep here. I love checking once or twice a day to just see what's been said the last 12-24 hours, commenting when relevant and going deep where necessary. Can't really engage in the same way anywhere else. I'll miss this place and the particular group we've assembled here. I'll still be commenting on r/mtgcube but I don't see myself going anywhere else.
I don’t understand the decision to shut it down... Did they approach any Magic businesses to help support it? My startup would have been interested in taking a look.
Same thing happened with Cubetutor - he posted a blog post about how he doesn’t have enough time to support the site, so I messaged him and asked how much he’d sell it for. He responded that he didn’t want to sell it... It doesn’t make much sense to simply let these things go into oblivion.
My cube will not exist if not for these forums. This is one of the few places on the internet where these is much civility among strangers. The level of discussion here is top notch. I am going to miss this, but hopefully we move to another platform and continue the great thing we have here.
Many thanks to the mods and admins of these forums.
This is sad, lurking here was what got my cube off the ground and when I got involved with the community it really developed. The cube forum was MTGS for me, I basically never posted any where else. It's been a great community and a site I visited almost every day if even just to read new posts. When I want to get my mind of something I could always just go read some cube discussion to distract me.
I don't use Reddit and aren't involved in any other cube communities so I really hope there is somewhere to migrate to. Forums are the form factor I enjoy, old threads can become new again and it is interesting to see how opinions have changed over time, you don't really get that with Reddit or other alternatives. I might give the discord a go.
I think I will miss spoiler season the most, but at least we got a really good send off.
Thanks to all the Mods and community members for many years of enjoyment.
Sad to hear this. This was my go-to forum for Cube discussion, Truth be told, forums are best place for in-depth discussion, and I hope we can collectively land in the same place - I find reddit, twitter, discord to be mediocre places for multiple ongoing discussions.

It's not quite that straightforward. MTGSalvation was purchased by Curse, who in turn is now part of Fandom. As part of Curse's integration into Fandom, community sites such as MTGSalvation are being phased out while Fandom focuses on other endeavors (such as D&D Beyond as noted in Feyd's announcement). While the admin team is made up of invested Magic players, the ownership of the website is not.
Fandom/Curse was approached regarding ownership change of this site and the logistics surrounding it an it was not something that an agreement was able to be reached about. As I noted above, Feyd Ruin, the other three administrators, and some others that they're working with, are in the process of building a site with the intention of having it be a site that gives the community the tools and features they deserve while also providing the administration and tech team with the ability to develop needs without having competing projects.
The team above is also looking into providing on-site cube management tools that would allow you to create/edit a cube on the site and browse others' cubes, not unlike the deckbuilder functionality here today (although I'm not clear on the details beyond that it's being looked into nor am I clear on how it would integrate into the new forum structure).
That really sucks. I will be sorry to see mtgs go.
To those of you from mtgs forming a new site, I know this may seem trivial but I can't tell you how critical the "new cards discussion" section of the forum has been to the maintenance of my cube. I'm certain that others feel the same way. If I'm not way out of line, please include something like that on the new site. It would be a real shame to lose that platform for discussing new cards in such a focused, uninterrupted way.
Yea the new card discussion is my favorite part of our cube forum. I have so much muscle memory ingrained into my hands that sometimes when I come to MTGS to read something else I end up in "Cube Card and Archetype Discussion" anyway. Lol. Looking forward to what comes next.
Worst news I’ve heard all month. Cube discussing will never be the same. Certainly the history and depth will be lost. I’m not going to reddit so who knows where I’ll go
