I think Few cubes will play this. Currently I am running Abrade, Incinerate, Lightning Strike and Magma jet in the 2 mana burn spells. Cool Spell, but can't target players so basically this can go in the unplayable pile of hot garbage.
This might get there in a planeswalker-less cube, but not being able to target both players and creatures is a huge downside in traditional cubes. Anytime you hit a creature (which is probably most of the time), this will be better than your average Incinerate effect though. I'd be more interested if it was Scry 2, but Scry 1 isn't enough to sacrifice the ability to hit players / planeswalkers, IMO.
That said, it’s a fourth-tier red removal spell and that list is already long as hell.
This is completely accurate. I've still got some junky red burns that I wanna cut, but if I replaced one with this, it would just be a slightly less junky burn.

I looked at your cube, and yes, you have some very junky burn cards. I’d certainly run this before some of the ones you have.
Lightning Strikes don't have to be able to hit players to be good, as Abrade has shown us. I just wish that it would hit planeswalkers, then it might be worth it for your control decks.

Abrade is good cause it's a shatter you can main deck. Lightning strikes absolutely have to be able to go to the face or have significant upside. Scry 1 is not enough.

Would you cube a 1R instant deal 3 damage to a creature or planeswalker scry 2? I think I would. Flameslash would also be much better if it hit planeswalkers. But you have a point with Abrade being more of a main deck shatter.

Meanwhile an izzet control deck will run lightning strike for the ability to deal with creatures and planeswalkers, but would trade the reach for more dmg or scry. If we had enough good burn spells printed, how many burn spells should we put in a cube for the control or slower decks?
