Quite interesting mechanic, not sure we have enough self-targeting cards in a standard cube for this to actually be useful. But a very cool card nonetheless that I may have missed some interactions with. Thoughts?
If combat tricks were already good enough to be included in typical high powered lists, this would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, combat tricks aren't good enough for typical cubes, so this is an unfortunate easy pass.
I hope someday though wizards starts printing some pushed, cube playable combat tricks. We'd need A LOT of these before this becomes playable in cube unfortunately. It's a shame too because I really like this design.
I play some combat tricks, but not enough to justify this. The design is super cool though. Buyback may never be returning, but perhaps they'll be willing to explore some of the same space in the future with cards like this.
Edit: I took a gander through my cube, and I really didn't find much that combos with this well. There's stuff like Arc Lightning, and Hungry Flames that make a decent damage engine. There's stuff like Boros Charm and Mutagenic growth that are useful, but fair to recast. There are a few decent cantrip cards like Shelter and Fire // Ice. There's stuff like Rite of Replication that doesn't work on Feather since it's legendary, but works on your other creatures. And there's stuff like Rabid Bite and Prey Upon, which honestly look like some of the better synergies, but most people don't go near cards like that. I was hoping for some better engines to build.
Note: You mentioned Fire Covenant, which is a great card. It's supposed to be on my list, but it's missing... I'll have to investigate.
I dont think I have many cards that trigger it. I mean I guess I could do something cute like use my path to exile to trade creatures for lands or "buyback" a mystic confluence by using a mode to bounce a guy, but not alot beyond that.
There are no cheap, creature targeting cantrips in cube and those seem to be what this guy wants.
If you wanted to support this I think the obvious go to is the Heroic cards from original Theros block. I don't think any of them are impactful enough to really a vintage/legacy cube. It would be interesting to explore this in a lower powered cube.
I think my concern with this card is whatever X is for reaching critical mass to ensure you get the right value at the right time. I have not actually ran the numbers through hypergeometric distribution but it seems wildly inconsistent at a glance.

Not nearly enough.
EDIT: In Feather's defense, she's insane with Kolaghan's Command.

But in my cube, the ability is semi-profitable on Vapor Snag, Firestorm, Fire Covenant, Fire // Ice and Boros Charm. Or maybe to Bolt itself with a Young Pyromancer or Monastery Mentor out.
I’m willing to dumpster-dive some jank if there’s a payoff, but nah.
