My friend and I are working to build a cube that will include drafting planar cards after the draft. The cube will contain 540 cards, he and I cannot seem to agree on archetypes, as I want 10 2 color archetypes, and he wants 8 archetypes that have support in 3 or more colors. This feels like it would make the cube too homogeneous though. any feedback would be great.
Drafting planar cards? As in each player contributes cards to the planar deck?
Im a fan of planchase; it makes for weird swingy games, but sometimes that is a double edged sword. Ever been stuck in nephilia drownyard? (Just an example off the top of my head).
Letting people nattow down the planes could give some decks a huge advantage, in a high powered environment getting 2 turns on favorale plane could just win you games, especially if your opponet has to lose tempo spending mana to move on.
I would suggest jut running them all, its meant to be a high variance format and the best stories come from both playersmaing the best of a less than ideal plan or going through a weird series of planes.
What kind of power level are you aiming for? This seems ideal for a lower powered cube.
Have you ever seen the format its based on? You have a central deck full of enchantmets and splashy spells. Works pretty similar to planechase; the enchantmets effect everyone and you resolve spells before moving on. This could give you a better control over your effects.
I find planchase cards worked best in multi-player and helps offset some of the king-maker problems that plague 3 player as well as the problem 1v1 where a plane puts 1 player too far ahead. Good luck with this, planechase deserves more love.
