I think the new rule makes planeswalkers more manageable (a plus). I did forget that they have been around for 11 years. I was more focused on how many cards say "Destroy target/all [insert card type]" how many of those say planeswalker compared to others? I do think the damage redirection rule is more intuitive and it makes some cards better against planeswalker and other worse (earthquake effects)
I don't have a limit on planeswalkers, but I do have a limit on card roles. I have no problem cutting Phyrexian Arena for a walker, but I definitely have problems cutting Dauthi Horror for one. Eventually you just don't have room for more value engines
At 360 if you're building a "power level" Cube I think the reverse is the bigger issue: "value engines" have a hard time keeping up. Even 2 per color ends up being more of a quota than a cap.
I've become more generous with my caps going from 2 per color/colorless 1 per guild to 3 per color/colorless (and still 1 per guild). I'm thinking about upping my cube size to 500 and part of that might be raising walker caps to 4 per color/colorless and up to 2 per guild, but that is were I intend to stop. I don't want there to be packs with 5 PW's semi-regularly.
I get that. One of the things that changed my mind about walkers is realizing how poorly supported fair decks were in my cube, which was very similar to many cube here on MTGS. If you failed to pull busted synergies or go hard aggro in draft you weren't able to compete. Certain walkers (Ajanis, Garruks, Viviens) can do a lot to bolster fair midrange decks and help them compete with more unfair decks. Aggro and control are strong enough in my environment to keep the extra value walkers generate in check. Also, not every walker these days is a grindy token making value engine that promotes board stalls. WAR Nissa is a draw spell with some stax built in. Baby Tefery is basically a bounce spell with upside. Gideon Blackblade is for most purposes an aggro beater.
Upping my walker count was part of a pretty gigantic overhaul to my cube that I'm planning on making a post about sometime in the near future. So far my experience has been positive.
360-cube - Suggestions welcome!
