First off, the obvious: this is not for small cubes. However, I love it. I love the callbacks to Breeding Pit (which I once tried to play) and Lord of the Pit, and I love the sweet Seb McKinnon art, and I'm excited to try it in a deck.
Sure, real token makers like Bitterblossom, and real demons like Desecration Demon might make this look lame, but I don't like either of those cards. This one is way cooler. Definitely in for me.
Thought about it for a while myself... I support an aristocrats theme that can make use of the tokens.. and a 6/6 flying trample is very powerful for 4 mana.
Decided against it.. I suspect the output will be too slow , the 0/1's will be too low impact, sacrifice on upkeep downside is real. Also, wouldn't play it outside of a deck that can't make great use of the 0/1's.
Possible I'm underestimating how good 4 0/1's will be in aristocrat decks..
Maybe a G/B deck with skullclamp & gae's cradle would want this too
I like the net value, but as a whole the card is too slow and predictable. It takes 3 turns after you cast this in order to start attacking, and if the Clerics are removed the demon token could work against you. The BCS only occurs in a certain situation with a certain deck, and this isn’t going to be a major draw to that deck.
Getting the demon token bounced after having to wait 2 turns to summon it would be a real feelbad moment. I don't think this is remotely close to cubeable.
A couple weeks ago I decided to test of almost any card in dominaria that is remotely close to cubeable and rite of belzenlok was one of them.
I predicted it being better in my cube than most due to my support of an aristocrat archetype in black, that makes great use of sacrifice abilities and 0/1's. However, I wasn't sure if it was possible to see play outside of that archetype. After a few cubes experience, I think the answer is a clear "yes" and there is a very high chance this card will stick in my cube far past the funsies test period. Very pleasantly surprised.
Yesterday I drafted a RBw midrange brew that had interesting synergies that Belzenlok worked well with. The 6/6 demon won me a couple games, and the 0/1's made good chump blockers and skull clamp fodder. listing the cards that worked well the central theme.
Side fun bonus: Enchantment card type for emrakul!
Now, I am far from recommending the card for any cube at this point. But I think the card is very playable with deck's that make great use out of 4 0/1 bodies (Skull clamp, Opposition, Gae's Cradle, Smokestack) and is not embarrassing as played as a 23rd playable in a good stuff deck with some creatures.
Thanks for the feedback!! I've been really interested in Rite for my 720 and I feel like your experiences are good enough for me to give it the test I wanted to
