What the heck am I reading!

I'm not considering our new Fiend version but these effects have a long history with cube, Mesmeric Fiend was heavily played for many years and can still be found in some cubes so to suggest that they aren't worthy of discussing is mistaken. FWIW I prefer Fiend since missing creatures is kind of a huge deal. Plus black's two drops have come mighty far since the days when we ran Fiend. As a 2/1 this would be a really interesting card as it would apply a lot of pressure.

Came into thread to see how this card got to 3 pages of discussion.
Found out the answer and wished I never bothered to investigate.

As to the card, to loosely paraphrase wtwlf, if the body isn't good then it becomes that much more about the effect. Adding flying and a point of toughness does not mitigate the loss of targets for the effect here. A 2/1 here would've been pretty awesome actually. Aw well.

A 2/1 version of this could be printed in a supplemental product probably

I might play this with a piker body. As is, I don't think it's good enough for my 450.

Man, on one hand I hate trolling and aggressive out-of-place arguments, but on the other hand, this is the best thread in a while.

Also, what kind of a person plays Legacy FFA? Are we talking a casual multiplayer fun hour at an LGS where someone just joins in with a Legacy deck? That's like the people who have $5000+ competitive 1v1 EDH Storm decks that ask to join a group of kids playing with the newest Commander precons.

I like Mesmeric Fiend quite a bit. Partly though because it's got the O-ring loophole which is relevant in aristocrats. I think I'm in the camp that losing the ability to target creatures is not worth +0/+1 and flying. But I feel like it's probably pretty close.

I agree, as there will be a good amount of spots where the exile will feel virtually the same. But 'close' isn't where I want to be with a mesmeric fiend variant, as I feel like that is barely getting there if at all as is.

People who have tested this card - what are your thoughts? I’m thinking of swapping it in over one of the lackluster 2 cost black aggro creatures. It’s not as good at beating down as say, Glint-Sleeve Siphoner, but the disruption seems crucial and it does beat down more reliably than other fiends.

How has it performed for you?

I've been testing Freebooter as of late, and it's better than I expected. The evasion is relevant enough to make it just better than Fiend/Maggot in this format; the opposite of what I originally expected.

Yeah but how is it in modern?!?!

Also how has drocka, Modern Master been for people?

I agree it's better than I thought, and was wrong about it's action in practice. It still has wildly missed in some games where fiend would've hit something good, and it doesn't feel like a cube card then, but it's less embarrassing than I thought it would be as a t2 flier is still good vs a lot of boards.

So happy to have found this thread. After a few cube/Highlander games with the gal, I've also flipped. Coming down to take an early play, getting in for 3 before finally eating good removal felt fantastic. But the ceiling isn't much higher and the floor can be much lower. Thinking of an Asylum Visitor/Blood Artist cut. But I like both of those, although Visitor never sees play.

FWIW, Visitor was our cut. I think the card's better than people give it credit for, but people will actually play Freebooter.
