I have been considering to add Chromatic Star to my cube as an artifact that 'likes' to be sacrificed. Recent sets have provided more outlets for the 'Welder' archetype (Pia and Kiran Nalaar, Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast). There are other possible inclusion for a similar effect such as Ichor Wellspring, Myr Retriever, Perilous Myr, Epochrasite. However I feel that the Star is the most universal and playable in other decks aswell as a way to splash for a 3rd, 4th or even 5th color if you're into that stuff .
Is there room for a low-impact card like Chromatic Star in cube? Would it make the 23 in your Welder deck or 4-5 color control deck?
Perilous Myr, Epochrasite, and Filigree Familiar are better options for what you're trying to achieve. Both make fine speed bumps for controlling and grindy recursive decks, and are also fine Tinker/Welder fodder. If you're cool with Conspiracies, you might also try Sentinel Dispatch.

I ran Perilous Myr for a while and it was decent. I'd prefer that, along with the cards Spike Rogue mentions. The new Familiar looks great and much better than the Star. Both Myr and Familiar have additional interactions because of they are creatures, such as with Reveillark and Recurring Nightmare.
Sorry for Necro this Thread, but I think that this card improved in recent years since the current cube needs more mana correctors than in 2016, and the 1cc is more valuable now for a more powered environment as well. What do the people think about this card nowadays?
The value of this card was recently highlighted to me through playing BRO limited. That format had a couple of cheap mana-fixing cantrips that fit into any deck, and often rewarded me for cutting back on land in exchange for greater filtering for bombs and sac fodder for set mechanics. I feel like artifact decks will often enjoy it, and non-artifact decks will also find it playable.
Chromatic Star / Chromatic Sphere are good cards, but they're pretty low impact / priority, IMO. To me they fall in the category of Flagstones of Trokair / Castle Eiganjo where they're technically overall better than a basic Plains, but I really wouldn't want to devote a cube slot to it unless I'm at a very large size or REALLY pushing something specific. Chromatic Star is especially great as Tinker / Welder fodder, but I think Star / Sphere are a step below Urza's / Mishra's Bauble since they're free, fuel up the graveyard faster, and help increase the velocity of spells matters type cards.

The card has definitely improved with the advent of things like Lurrus / Urza's Saga, but I'd argue there isn't much more of a need for mana fixing considering a lot of the recent printings we've got over the years (Prismatic Vista / Triomes / Pathways / complete cycle of talismans / etc).
I’m a fan of a high density of 0/1 mana artifacts to support a “trinket” style artifact deck that overlaps with traditional ramp based artifact decks.
-cheap tinker targets
-turbo charge tolarian academy quick
-empty hand quick for balance/draw 7
-optionality for urzas saga/trinket mage
-synergies with sai master thopterist, emry, kappa cannoneer, goblin welder, goblin engineer (all excellent cards if supported)
-pumps up karnstructs quick
I don’t run chromatic star but it would be high up on the trinkets I don’t run, that I’d consider running.
this is one experiment I’ve run in my cube that has been clearly successful.
It supports 2 artifact decks in a pod of 8. that might be too much for some palettes, but I like it.

Feels good to tinker it away on turn 2, something usually reserved for Moxes.
