First Strike

4/4
What do we think of this? 5 mana for a 4/4 first strike is behind curve, but not by too much, and in my unpowered 465 there's 35 cards this fetches (note it's ANY legendary, not only creatures), and since it's ETB, you can blink it (although you'd have to have multiple legendary cards to make that relevant). Is this limited tutor effect enough to justify a 5cmc 4/4 first strike? I'm honestly not sure.
So in a perfect world would you tutor for a 6 drop legend? Or would you tutor for a 3 drop or something less impactful...I think the impact this card has is what the tutor target is.
Card selection is always valuable, as is free card draw. Given the 5 cmc I think this could be too slow.
This seems on the level with Stonehewer Giant, which is fine for pushing an archetype but how much better is this than drawing a card? Especially given the limited selection you will have in a deck?

You used mana tags instead of card tags =P
Also, I think this is better than stonehewer - There are only 10 pieces of equipment in cube, this is ETB so you don't have to wait a full turn, it doesn't cost extra mana, and I think first strike is more valuable than vigilance. I'm still not sure it's good enough to test in small to medium cubes, but I do think it's above stonehewer (especially where there is a much, much more efficient version of stonehewer in stoneforge, but not really a more efficient version of this effect.) I like going this into a elesh norn, or avacyn, or one of the theros gods, for example).
Not a bad card. As time goes on the saturation of legendary creatures gets higher and higher, but it doesn't provide enough utility or raw stats to compete in the 5-cmc white section.
Most white decks are going to have at least one target, as it's easily the most legendary heavy color, with Elesh Norn, Thalia 1/2, Isamaru, Karakas, Avacyn, Brimaz, Spear of Heliod, Gideon as cards that basically everyone is including, with tons of others that see some play. Obviously, some of those aren't particularly exciting to go get, but getting an Elesh Norn or an Avacyn is a huge game.
Jitte is legendary and is an awesome card to go get with this, not to mention the dozens of cubable legends in other colors. Honestly, this comes down to preference. This can be every bit as good as currently played white 5 drops.
Competition is very massive in both cube / deck slot. He's too slow for any aggro deck to want him, isn't the stat monster / token generator that a token deck would want, and is okay in control I guess? His ability isn't even that abusable with things like Recurring Nightmare compared to other 5-drops like Cloudgoat Ranger.

Just combed through my cube, the only two 6 drop legends I play are Tasigur and Dragonlord Silumgar. Maybe as time goes on, but right now most 6 drop creatures end in the word "Titan."
Wow. That's a cool card. It fetches a decent number of 6+ drops in my list, in addition to some engine cards. Could be very playable but I have no idea what I'd cut for it.
Starting with XLN this can now search for any planeswalker!
Just to expand on this for anyone who have not heard: With XLN they are changing Planeswalkers to be legendary permanents that obey the normal legendary rule, and they are getting rid of the Planeswalker uniqueness rule. This has two important impacts:
You can now control different planeswalker of the same type, i.e., you can control Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Jace Beleren and Jace, Architect of Thought at the same time.
Some cards that care about legendaries now affect planeswalkers as well. Most cards do however explicitly
state Legendary Creature and so will not work. The two most exciting/fun seem to be Thalia's Lancers and Empress Galina.
With this change I think I will try Thalia's Lancers out, seems pretty strong to me - and seems very fun in both flicker and superfriends decks.

Legendary creature should still work on things like Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and every Gideon variant since they will be Legendary Planeswalker Creature - X
This one does seem to benefit more than any other card with the legendary planeswalkers change. My 720 cube runs about 60 legendary creatures, which just wasn't enough for the Lancers to feel like good value. It runs another 45 or so planeswalkers though, and almost every one of them is game-changing and exciting to tutor up. Perhaps especially the white ones, where you can fetch an Elspeth, a W/B Sorin, a Gideon, an Ajani... it becomes a surprisingly strong line of play, since these are a respectable bodyguard for said PW.
Not really sure what to take out for it. Among white five-drops it could bump Cataclysmic Gearhulk or Angel of Sanctions, or perhaps Linvala the Preserver at six mana. Could also bump a marginal option like Solemn Recruit or Bygone Bishop from lower on the curve.

I like Lancer more than Gearhulk and can go either way between Lancer and Angel of Sanctions.
Yeah I'm intrigued as well, but its long-term viability suffers from it costing 5. A card I'd be happy switching in randomly to change things up, though.
Despite having lower stats than some other options, Thalia's Lancers has been testing well since the announcement of the planeswalker rule change. The way I phrased it with my playgroup was: Would you rather have a Baneslayer on the table, or a 4/4 first strike on the table and a Jace/Elspeth/Gideon in your hand?
Lancers went from 45 targets to 76 in my cube with the rule change, and adds a ton of premium ones. It's an increase of 69% of its total targets...
It loses a little value in Sealed Deck, but even in a 2-player Glimpse Draft, without drafting around lancers, each player should average 6-7 potentially useable targets for Lancers in their pool.

No, sadly. I think if this could tutor for any PW it would be a slam dunk honestly.
