This is a good card, but Golgari is a tight guild. Being a 4-drop doesn't help.
I'd like a return to Lorwyn, and I'd love a Aztec/Mayan plane that actually seems to be about Aztecs/Mayans instead of the flavor mishmashes of Ixalan.
I thought she was going to be more popular in my playgroup, but she never drew much interest. Which is probably for the best, because the competition at the top of the Golgari section is pretty steep.
A return to Dominaria would be welcome, if they do it right.
Disclaimer: Today's card doesn't actually have any particular synergy with equipment.
What theme or subtheme (such as Innistrad's Spider Spawning or Khans' Five-Color Morph) do you most wish played as well in cube as it did/does in its retail draft format?
Blade Splicer is incredible. It's one of those creatures that fits in any deck that's playing white. The only white deck I would be hesitant to run it in would be a white control build, but even then it's not embarrassing there either as it does make a number of blockers tough to get by. Great card.
Spider Spawning would probably be it, actually. Easily my most favorite limited archetype, mulching off gnaw to the bones and spider spawnings is the dream.
Bladesplicer is definitely one of the best 3-drop creatures around. Powerful, splashable, and has lots of synergies, it’s not hard for this to see play at all.
I really liked Dampen Thought arcane decks from triple CHK limited. Hopefully they’ll do Splice right next time eventually.
Would also like to see more tribal synergies that can crack high-powered cubes. Zombies is so close!
Blade Splicer is great. It is a solid curve filler in any deck running white and has a number of synergies that put it over the top for alot of decks:
It is aggressively costed; 4 power for 3 mana, 3 of it first striking.
It is a 2 for 1; this is great with anthems or anything that cares about creatures CIP.
Loves being blinked.
Reanimated by all the small creature reanimation spells (Reveillark, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Unearth etc.).
Splashable
It has all usual token synergy.
Human synergy (if you support that sort of thing).
General artifact synergy.
It has random synergies with Golems (Precursor Golem) and changelings (Mirror Entity)
Even in very controlling builds it is pretty ok, as it is a cheap creature provides 2 blockers for the agro matchup where you are at you weakest. It has a solid floor and in the right deck a reasonably high ceiling. The only major drawback is you can get blown out by removal if your opponent kills the splicer or you have Precursor Golem out.
I don't play a lot of retail limited, and when I do it's usually pre-releases so I'm less inclined to play the weird decks. I would like it if Morph had a bit more depth to it for cube, as it stands you can guess what the face down creature is 95% of the time. It would be cool if Approach of the Second Sun was a bit stronger, it could have made for a cool control alt-win condition (a thing cube lacks IMO).
I really liked Dampen Thought arcane decks from triple CHK limited. Hopefully they’ll do Splice right next time eventually.
I never played splice but it always seemed really cool design space, it's a pity it was tied (or should that be spliced) to arcane. I'm really surprised we haven't seen in a commander product as "Splice onto Sorcery" or even "Splice onto Creature", although from my understanding it would need a new keyword to work on with permanents. I assume balance is the issue; it seems like if you can splice it onto any card you would have to overcost it to the point where it wouldn't really crack cubes.
An Evermind with "Splice onto Instant or Sorcery" would be a pretty cool card.
Blade Splicer is a really solid card. It's a fine card just on its own, but it plays well in blink/recruiter decks and token shells too.
I'd like to have a competitive morph subtheme in the cube. I love the hidden information subgame, and I wish it translated better into more powerful formats like cube.
Blade Splicer is just a very solid card. You get two bodies for three mana, both capable of holding equipment and advancing your offense. It blinks well, recurs well; the main card is fine as a sacrifice to other effects. Hard to imagine it leaving the cube soon.
My favorite mechanic of all time is morph, which is unfortunately terrible in cube, as there are only a handful of viable cards with the mechanic and it's not too difficult to guess what the card might be. So I built an entirely separate 360 card cube, The Mystery Box, to indulge my love of the morph mechanic. Can't wait to see it cycle back one more time and provide me with some more options.
Being 2 bodies is really good, as you can provide the attacker and the chump blocker.
There is also the aforementioned blink, reanimation and anthem synergies.
It has Human, Golem and artifact synergies as well. That is a lot for 3 mana.
What I always wished for is that there are more Investigate cards for green, and now Treasure synergy for black. This is for my artifact cube.
Also, I wish they somehow merged Gold, Etherium Cell and Treasure into 1 thing - seems such a waste that all that synergy is lost.
I've been having a lot of good success with this Liliana. She makes zombies (in two ways), fuels the 'yard, reanimates stuff and can have a meaningful ultimate. She's not great in a really creature-light control deck, but she plays well everywhere else, including multiple black archetype shells. I'm a fan.
I'm a fan too. Hopefully I won't always need to play her, but I'm happy to. She does some pretty unique stuff for a planeswalker, it's rare to get multiple reanimations off a cubeable spell outside of Recurring Nightmare.
Also agree on the equivalent. One that can sac creatures to drain life from an opponent ala blood artist would be sweet, especially if it was a zombie, or at minimum made zombies.
I've really moved away from CC1 3 drops, if I can. It improves manabases without having to go overboard on fixing. Cool card, and I might play it at 2W, but then again that's one of the most stacked slots in cube.

he's been hanging in there for me mostly for nostalgia reasons i have from playing him in standard. hes probably my first cut from that section though.

Black five drops are one of the most barren sections in cube. What would your ideal black five drop look like?
I want black's equivalent to Cloudgoat Ranger/Siege-Gang Commander/Deranged Hermit...
