Ok wizards, I like you I really do, and this set has been smashing for a lot of holes in cube. But the thing is Golgari didn't need a mythic, I really wanted a mutant toad at 6 in mono-green. But I get that you needed it to be BG for the set balance and whatever and to be honest we don't have many huge options for creatures in that guild so I might give it a shot.
But you choose the huge evil swamp monster to be a midrange 5 drop?
Then you give a 6/6 deathtouch? As opposed to trample, Not with Trample?
And the land ability is sweet, almost worth saccing lands, but putting a ramp like ability on a huge moderately expensive creature?
I really like the synergies with this thing but it is an easy pass for me.
Maybe if it was a 3/9 that you didn't have to sac the land or it had trample, or maybe a 6 mana 8/8 or something. Probably rather stick with spiritmonger but that is around number 8 in golgari now.
I honestly have no clue what to do with this card. It's really cool and has some awesome synergies, but golgari is pretty tight and I don't see it beating top 4. Maybe I'll test it.
In all seriousness, Golgari doesn't really need a 5 mana draw engine. Black 5 drops may be desperate, but this isn't the solution to that problem. Unless even in a grindy cube, sacing a land every turn is not something I want unless the payoff is there.
This might be my favorite creature ever. Utterly absurd with Loam, Crucible, Assault/Vortex, Titania, dredgers, really just that whole package. It dominates the board and lets you casually do silly Exploration things if nothing else. And it's a giant frog horror on top of it all.
I will be slamming this and running it until the end of time, even if nobody else in my cube ever drafts it.
Get in my cube! Honestly Im not sure this is a good card or not. Has a lot of synergies, but doesnt trample or do anything when it ETB. Spiritmonger isnt good enough anymore, so Im not sure where to put this.
I think I'll pass. I don't think my cube needs a big Golgari beater, and I think on average Meren will generate more value. I REALLY like this creature, but it needed to be cheaper or have trample.
Seriously though, in the right deck this guy could draw like 3-4 cards per turn. Crazy.
We have plenty of Exploration effects on a body, but no Crucible effects yet. If this card didn't make me sac lands and was a Crucible of Worlds on a 6/6, I'd probably test it.
I think it has more to do with fully supporting an archetype it can shine in than anything else. If you play a Titania/KotR aggro loam package, this card will probably fit just fine.
The problem with that deck wasn't that it was missing legendary frog horrors ...it's that it was missing more Crucible/Loam land recursion engine cards.
Since it is a legend, I'm going to slot this into the generals draft portion of the EDH expansion to my cube. Even as an EDH cube card, I'm not so sure this is better than the threeGolgarigenerals I'm currently running, but this card looks like so much fun I've just gotta try it.
Seems like a great card to keep in the "swap in when I've been drinking" binder.
Why on Earth don't I have one of these?

To be honest, I'm looking at adding this into my cube. It seems pretty good with squandered resources and worm harvest. Only downside is that is forcing me to rethink how I'm using mythics.
I know you limit the number of Mythic Rare cards you allow in each color, do you not run any multicolor mythics? Because if you do, I'm sure you could find one for each guild that fits your cube's style. There are tons of janky multicolor mythics.
Blah, deathtouch on a 6/6 body is such a waste of a keyword. Sure, I guess frogs can be poisonous, but this thing ought to have reach so it can "eat" flyers.
Also, if anyone read the Magic Story article that went with this card,
it literally is a hypnotoad, so I wish they had played that up a bit more, rather than the sacrifice aspect.

It should have been in addition to the sacrifice aspect..... Although a downside of this magnitude on a modern mythic is pretty unusual. And I agree a toad with reach would be all kinds of flavor win.
If the land sacrifice was part of an activated ability to do something it would have been sweet. Lure, Unblockable, Trample would have all been awesome, themey, and in color.
My B/G decks usually fall in the reanimator or long game attrition style. Not good at all reanimator, and I think it has long game potential (which makes me like it more than I orignally thought). But for either style I think Meren outclasses it, and I haven't even tried her yet.
Is the downside really even that bad? It's a lot less punishing than something like Smothering Abomination, since you'll almost never have to sacrifice itself and the Exploration ability means that you're not really going to be stuck on mana if you have lands in hand.
Weird.... I really wish it had trample, but still... crazy potential for value and goofy synergies.

Golgari is stacked though . Maybe it is better than Meren of Clan Nel Toth?
