He's better than Goldmane in my experiences with him at least. If you want to cur 1 4cc card, it should be goldmane.
Without a doubt gideon is a better card than goldmane, but goldmane is more powerful in a dedicated token deck.
I could see an argument for playing goldmane over gideon, as gideon is another all-around good 4 drop which there are plenty of in the cube. Depends if you are in the market for specialists vs an all-around all star (that happens to also be solid in the deck goldmane excels in).
I broke my one PW per colour rule for this guy. He seems great and I value versatility in cards and this guy looks like he goes in a few decks. Drafting tonight, hope he comes up!
So, after a year of playing with Angelic Destiny I've decided to give it the axe and put GAoZ back in. I've turned the corner on and put my fears of PW saturation behind me. I feel like 5-6 walkers per color in a 540 wouldn't be too much.
Planeswalkers become easier to check as we get more efficient / aggressive creatures, tokens that can go wide, and removal.
100%. Planes walkers are undoubtedly strong and can take over games, but I think the general stigma against over saturation that can surface around here is overblown.
Also this Gideon is super super strong and should be one of the few to include, even with white having arguably the best collection of PWs. Having a permanent anthem is really underrated and is how I've won the most amount of games with this guy.

The anthem was the part I underrated about this Gideon, it is very common to instantly use his last ability
Ironically the times I -4'd Gideon have usually been the times it backfires and I lose the game. Sacrificing a GREAT token engine for an anthem tends to backfire, in my personal play. Great card would recommend him at any size.

It's not always black and white. Those decks are often redundant in their token produces, so sometimes you want the anthem instead of going another inch wider; other times you need the token producer. Gideon's power comes in that flexibility, either being the army or being the thing the army wants.
I think people attack with Gideon way less often than they should be. I regularly see people make tokens or anthems with him when the correct line is just getting into the red zone with him.

Totally, and also another reason why he's incredible. He's no joke as a 5/5, and also enables you to anthem later w/o losing him.
The first few drafts, the only reason Gidoen was turned into a 5/5 was to make an Anthem while keeping the token engine on the board. During our last draft however, the player kept bashing me with a 5/5 Gideon and holy cow is that a beating! My life kept falling so quickly it was downright scary. I guess the other players who witnessed that will use that ability more often from now on.
I do not regret cutting Ajani Goldmane for this card. It is pretty savage. Even more savage than an anthropomorphic lion with a giant twin-bladed axe. That's savage.
Gideon is the more flexi of the two. But Goldmane is anthem x4, a more token oriented walker. I believe Goldmane ends games faster than Gideon.
Overall in a given vacuum, Gideon would be the safer pick for sure.
