I think they could have probably printed a 2/1 for R with Prowess with a standard red drawback like "attacks each turn if able" or the Jackal Pup drawback. It would have been strong, for sure, but I think this guy is as well.

"Whenever ~ deals combat damage, it deals that much damage to you-" ?
Maybe. Does anyone play flesh reaver anymore? (Thats what he does right? I'm not misremembering that?)
I haven't seen Flesh Reaver in a cube in a long time. The fact that he deals 4 to you when killing a random 1/1 makes him really bad.
Black is the worst color to have self-damaging effects because they get worse when you stack them, and a ton of great black cards are already in the cube that damage their controller.

A Jackal Pub with Prowess would be bonkers!
What I was hoping for was a 1/1 with a double instance of prowess.
Ya, I was sad when I read somewhere that they didn't make it Prowess X, because they felt +1/+1 was going to be enough. That made it clear that there would be no multiple instances of Prowess, no "splashy" boosts a la Kiln Fiend.

OTOH, we have a few new cube-able ways to grant Lifelink now (notably Whip of Erebos), and lifelink on the Reaver makes him hella strong.

He is also spicy with things like disciple of bolas but I am probably the only person playing that.
As far as the swiftspear, he is going in extended testing for me. I am moving all of my aggro multicolor and phyrexian cheap drops to a separate section as an extra push for aggro. As a result I am seeing how I am undersupporting red 1 drops so this guy goes in for sure(and probably the waif again ).
How many free spells do people run in cube? Everyone has a certain number of moxes, even if unpowered, but what else? I have been trying empty the warrens to support the red god and red tokens as well as a good finisher for my spells matter deck (Not really storm but kind of ).
The others I run are
Fireblast
Gitaxian Probe
Force of Will
Daze
This guys just seems tasty in those decks so I trying to fit more in. If I didn't have to shoehorn dig through time in, I was going to try gush again.
Doesn't it just make him not deal damage to you? A 1B 4/4 is nothing to scoff at, but the fact that you need to wait two more turns to play Whip, need both cards concurrently, and it's just making him a vanilla beater that is getting outclassed at the 4 mana spot makes me think this guy is still not near cubeable, even in large lists.
A side question: Do you guys consider Rakdos Cackler to be more black or more red. If you had to choose.
Black has a good quantity of actual 2/x one-drops, while Red has only Satyr, Pup and Guide plus some workarounds like Noble (or Swiftspear). So Red needs Cackler more, while Black can pass it up more easily.
If I had to choose a color, red needs it more. But since both colors play aggro in my cube, classifying it as one of the two instead of both is disingenuous.

He'll go from dealing you 4 per turn to gaining you 4 per turn. You only miss out on one swing with lifelink, and your first swing with it recovers that loss. There are also a couple of cheaper cube-able ways to give him Lifelink like Nearheath Pilgrim.
He also combines very well with Curiosity effects, notably Tandem Lookout if you've ever considered it, since it will trigger once for hitting your opponent and another time for hitting you.
This is also the last I'm going to talk about this guy as we're getting pretty far off-topic here. Monastery Swiftspear is an interesting consideration, and I think a larger cube could definitely consider him as there's a major lack of great 2-power red 1-drops after the big three.

He does? Those effects only trigger when damage is dealt to the opponent.

Ahh, that is much better then. I wish there were more cubeable ways to give him lifelink.
Maybe, I miss something. But, giving Flesh Reaver lifelink does only nullify the damage done to you, as it still deals that damage to you while also gaining you the same amount of life. That looks like a zero-sum-game to me. I don't understand how that recovers any damage done before him having lifelink.
Whenever Flesh Reaver deals damage to a creature or opponent, Flesh Reaver deals that much damage to you.
He deals damage twice, so you gain 4 when he deals damage to a creature or opponent, and then I guess he deals damage again (to you) and you gain life off of the damage he deals to you. I missed that it worked like this.
So it looks like: Flesh Reaver deals damage, you gain 4. Flesh reaver trigger goes on the stack. When that trigger resolves, your life total won't change.
I was much higher on this card until I saw it in practice. It's worse than I thought it would be, and it has no chance whatsoever of cracking my cube list.
Long time no post here. I honestly would compare this card to the likes of Young Pyromancer than an aggro R 1-drop. Some apples-to-oranges here, but I can't view the card without the "needs a spell to be cube-worthy" sign
I think Monastery, a 1/2 haste for R with the upside of +1/+1 until EOT *after each noncreature spell*, is worse than
Pyromancer, a 2/1 for 1R with the upside of a 2/1 + 1/1 friend for each *subsequent noncreature spell cast*
I'd rather generate value on the table than pour all my eggs into the Monastery basket. What's worse is that we're not even seeing a Quirion Dryad "grow" effect. Monastery's "until EOT" perk is just not gonna cut it IMO. The times it works, you're probably ahead OR could have used any legitimate cube-worthy R 1 or 2 drop.
Comparing this guy to Jackal Pup and some other aggressive R attackers is unfair as Monastery constantly needs you to cast a spell to be aggressive. When you can't cast a spell, he's a dud and doesn't race. Red, of all colors, wants to race and burn out the opponent as quickly as possible. I'd rather have YP as my "I need a spell to be better" because I think it's all around better (see: cost-to-power ratio). I also don't want to shave out any R 1-drop in a sub 400-card pool for her.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
I was much higher on this card until I saw it in practice. It's worse than I thought it would be, and it has no chance whatsoever of cracking my cube list.
It can't reliably attack for two when you need it to. And a lot of my noncreature spells function better (or exclusively) at instant speed, where they don't do much of anything for this guy.
I drafted and witness firsthand the playability of the Swiftspear. I think it's a trap. If it can't even pass in its own limited environment it's really difficult to make the cut in Cube.
I'm with wtwlf here.
Also, never compare it with Young Pyro. He passes the bear test.
