I decided to necro this thread to see if thoughts have changed. The RR casting cost still makes me think it is only worthwhile in larger cubes. But what has the experience been with this card in cube?
Strong effect but the RR is prohibitive for the decks that want this. I think Harsh Mentor is a better overall cube card since it's only 1R and has a similar punisher effect.
It can be the most powerful red 2-drop, in the right situations. It needs to go into mono (or almost mono) red in order to come down on curve, which is important, given the nature of the effect. It also performs poorly in combat, so you want the ground to be open. But when this resolves n T2 in a matchup where the ground is going to be clear, it's a monster.
If your red aggro decks are mono-red, it's a shoe-in. If your aggro decks are 2-colors, or even a AB/c structure, Eidolon will probably miss the mark.
How is this card holding up in cubes today? I never got one but my buddy has one for trade so I was considering it.

Cube is one of it's weakest formats from my experiences.
A lot of decks accelerate quickly into the 4cmc territory, and few decks rely on multiple cheap cantrips/removal.
It's fine still, but Im not in love with the card.

You can make the argument if the opponent is able to accelerate into multiple 4+ CMC spells, the mono red player already lost the game.
This might be a bit controversial, but I would argue that Ash Zealot serves a better role than Eidolon as I've found the First Strike has been slightly more important than Eidolon's two damage.

It's much more powerful now than it was back in the day for me because cheap spells have become much better / more plentiful.
