Eidolon of the Great Revel
RR
Enchantment Creature - Spirit (R)
Whenever a player casts a spell with converted mana cost 3 or less, Eidolon of the Great Revel deals 2 damage to that player.

I think this card is pretty darn swell. While I don't enjoy adding two-drops with intensive costs, I have a feeling that this is powerful enough to warrant it. Thoughts?
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
But does anyone actually have Pyrostatic Pillar in their cube? I don't know how I would evaluate this card because I've never even heard of the Pillar.

The GameCube, a 500 cube with a medium power level and a focus on fun and fringe playables rather than immediately shutting your opponent down with the best cards ever printed.
Modem Masters, a 500 cube that tries to capture the essence of a Modern Masters set draft. 3 of each common, 2 of each uncommon, 1 of each rare, few mythics. Includes minor changes for balance reasons to give certain archetypes the tools they need to succeed.
This card doesn't seem that good in cube. You don't need it in your matchup against other aggro decks and against control, it sort of does nothing. If only it was sulfuric vortex on legs.

According to Cubetutor, 79 people. Out of 10000+ cubes.

On the other hand, this thing has legs. I'm not saying it's great, but it's vastly better than Pyrostatic Pillar IMO.
That also makes it way more vulnerable to removal. . . On the plus side, 90% of the time when they go to remove it punches them in the face. Or they can blow a wrath on it.

I think that the RR is especially prohibitive on this card, because each turn it fails to resolve due to the cost, its value goes down immensely. I could maybe see it seeing some play in particularly large cubes, but I certainly don't think it's a top red 2-drop for most cube lists. It's also extremely self-punishing. It will be going into decks where there will be a very small number of cards that you can cast that don't shock you, which can be brutal against decks that have an average number of 4 and 5-drops. So in the matchup where you're at your worst and need the most help (the aggro vs midrange matchup) it's going to be really lackluster. And it can be super-punishing in the aggro mirror. I'd rather run a 1R beater that will be more likely to resolve on curve and perform better in the matchups where I need it the most.
LOL, I totally misread the card.... I was wondering why everyone was so down on a RR creature that shocked your opponent whenever YOU played a CC 3 or less card. I was thinking, this guy has to be bonkers in the mono-red deck that basically has a curve of sub 3. Then I saw all the comments and reread the card and realized I am an idiot lol.
This card is potentially powerful in some formats, but I am pretty sure that cube isn't among those.
It is rather funny how widely the opinions on this card vary. Both here, where the cube is concerned, as well as in the Rumor Mill, where tournament formats are discussed. I mean, I am used to reading many converse opinions on new cards during rumor season, but with this card, it is rather extreme.
This card will get used, but I don't think cube is the place. We have some pretty low curves and red is usually happy to take damage to make damage but dinging your opponent for 2-4 damage and making them skip playing a cantrip in exchange for like 10 damage to yourself probably isn't going to do it. Give me a 2 drop ankh on legs and we are talking.
uh yeah, so far from playable in cube, it's not even close.
Most of the decks that beat red decks accelerate into cards that cost 4+ to stabalize.
Control decks included.
The decks that get punished the most by it are decks that are also agressive, and hence you are racing them.. So the drawback is just as big for yourself... Where you likely have lots of 3CC- cards.
Seems like an exceptional card for red control against aggro and midrange matchups. It's nearly worthless in many other matchups, however, and it's in a weird place where many aggro decks won't care if they're being pinged by this card. Not all red cards need to be either aggro or burn, but I think they need to be a little more universal in application than this one. It's maybe the second most interesting card spoiled so far though, aside from the Bestow guy. If that 'less' was a 'more', I'd be very happy right now.
I like it and will test it. It can really put a hurt on a lot of decks, and shocks them when they remove it. Wrath isn't great against red anyway, since you can usually follow up with some 4 mana hasty monstrosity. There are a lot of < 3cc spells in the cube.
I think it's insane for legacy/vintage. Here not so much. The amount of low-cc spells across most cubes is still enough to enable the card's value, but you're also going to take a hit yourself. Once the midgame of 4cc and above is reached, this card plummets. I personally wouldn't use it in cubes unless I had some very low curve. Red 2 drops is quite saturated as is + red decks in general get hosed more than the opponent (as burn and cheap threats = red's forte)

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
It's not a bad card, but I think the RR cost hurts it enough to keep it out of small-medium sized lists. But as we know, the shelf of playable red 2-drops is only so deep, so I think bigger cubes will likely look to this guy to be a filler 2cc critter that will occasionally "go off" against the right deck. There's no doubt that it has potential to be powerful in the right deck, against the right deck.
I feel that this is one of those cards that COULD end up being good in a powered cube but unplayable in unpowered ones. Life seems good when your first turn is Mountain, Ruby, Great Revel and your opponent has a bunch of cheap artifacts and blue spells in hand, ya know?
Ya, it certainly has a high ceiling if you can drop it early. If your cube sees a lot of mono-red aggro (compared to like R/X aggro) this is definitely a decent duder.
He's intriguing. He reminds me of when we were discussing Spirit of the Labyrinth, in that it's a potentially hugely impactful ability on a decently costed body, but which may not do much in certain matchups. This ability is weirdly placed on such a small, cheap creature, but I think there is potential here. Our control and midrange decks run enough cheap utility to make me think this will retain some relevancy, but the potential for damaging its own caster is massive. I really haven't made up my mind on this card until I see it in action, but I will be keeping an eye on it and maybe grabbing a copy to test.
I was lucky enough to pull two of these in the prerelease, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much work they did in my aggressive Rakdos sealed deck. Whenever I had an Eidolon out it pretty always did at least 2-4 damage to my opponent (and sometimes more to me) on top of acting as a lightning rod for removal and slowing down opponents who tried to play around it. Since the average CMC in cube is significantly lower than Theros limited it seems like it has potential to be even more effective in cube. I'm not supporting the Storm archetype in my cube, but I'm still looking forward to trying this out in my cube just for its potential in red-heavy aggro decks.
