I'm running a few more things from born of the gods then i should, because i like to flavor with the most recent sets, so I'm going to be running about 5 cards, but 2 semi-permanent average inclusions seems to be the case.
Torment's herald is only a matter of time(when wotc prints a baller 5 drop in black)
Xenagos, is just a timmy moment as a cube designer
Brimaz is solid
Kiora is ok, but ideally i'd like my whole simic section to be better then her.
Courser is pretty cool i guess, as is functional reprint of torch fiend.
Can I just say how much I'd cube Satyr firedancer if it was a 2/1, like, I would love the card if it simply had one more power :(.
Definitely agree about Satyr Firedancer, awesome card and art but it needed one more power.
Set is definitely disappointing but I'm getting a few decent cards. I'm wondering if I've been spoiled by recent sets or this set is actually just really bad. I'm thinking they dropped the ball with the gods, if they'd turned out more powerful I think the set would look a lot better.
In any case I'm adding:
Brimaz, King of Oreskos
Spirit of the Labyrinth
Pain Seer
Herald of Torment
Courser of Kruphix
Xenagos
I like Kiora too, but not that much more than my current Simic cards to put much effort in acquiring one. If I get lucky and pull one or get a good trade for her I'll run her. Otherwise my Simic section will stay the same.
Brimaz
Kiora
Courser of Kruphix
Herald of Torment
Pain Seer (just about good enough)
and I'm going to test
Archetype of Aggression
Spirit of the Labyrinth
I think the Archetype isn't bad at all as a trampler. A lot of the red cards already have haste, which is what we wanted/predicted, but have high power and no trample in a ton of cases. This one card could contribute a lot of damage, plus it's a decent body already - and I wanted an aggressive three-drop and it's probably better than Countryside Crusher which I just cut. Even 2/1 chumped by a token gives a little something back.
Some of the art in this set is so amazing, so it's a shame the Courser of Kruphix art was so mediocre. Any of the other Centaur art would have been preferable. Even Nessian Courser from Theros.
EDIT: Scraping for 20 is optimistic. There are maybe 10-15 potentially ok-great cube cards in this set.
Xenagos
Mogis
Satyr Firedancer
Courser of Kruphix
Spirit of the Labyrinth
Herald of Torment
White Archetype
Red Archetype
Astral Cornucopia
Brimaz
Bile Blight
Searing Blood
Kiora's Follower
Torch Fiend 2
Drown in Sorrow
Pain Seer
It's entirely possible I'm crazy, but I feel there's a chance Mogis is a little underrated. 2 damage or Diabolic Edict might be good either way for Rakdos decks, even when you would rather want the other option. The worst case I can imagine is when your aggro plan backfires and you end up against a control deck that sticks its win condition while at a high life total so they can afford to take some hits as they bring the pain with Baneslayer Angel or whatever. What other situations is he not so good in? Will they come up often?
I'm not surprised we got so little from this set. It's trying to balance so many different synergistic themes, and cubes have gotten quite strong in recent years.
Definite Includes:
Brimaz, King of Oreskos
Courser of Kruphix
Kiora, the Crashing Wave
Testing:
Xenagos, God of Revels
Kiora's Follower
Herald of Torment
Pain Seer
Drown in Sorrow
Spirit of the Labyrinth
Wow, kinda a bummer. Oh well, I was able to scrape the bottom of the barrel for a top 20 list, so at least there's that.
I will probably test 4-5 cards, and I could see 2-3 staying around for a while. 1 for sure.
Excited to see your top 20 preview (as usual)
gonna be a rough to fill out spots 10-20 probably
My list for 540
Brimaz, King of Orsekos
Courser of Kruphix
Kiora, the Crashing Wave (running 10 in each guild, so it does fit in)
Spirit of Labyrinth (540+)
I'm okay with three new cards. Don't need massive turnover every set.
Kiora, Courser and Brimaz will fit nicely in my cube. I wouldn't be surprised if word of mouth on here gets me to add Xenagos or Pain Seer in a few weeks.
Im planning on adding King Oreo, Kiora and the Torch Fiend reprint for sure and testing Spirit of the Labyrinth and the Courser in my 540. Kiora and the Fiend's cuts are easy choices for me. What are people cutting?

I still have some very obvious cuts
(definite)
Fiend Hunter - Brimaz
Trygon Predator - Kiora
Polukranos, World Eater - Courser
(testing)
Countryside Crusher - Archetype of Aggression
Weathered Wayfarer - Spirit of the Labyrinth
Blood Scriviner - Pain Seer
I'm unpowered so Torch Fiend #2 does not look essential. I see no other card wort of citing.
Fine, but I don't know if either will be mainstays for a long period of time. Erring on the side of caution, I'd pick up a cat king and wait on the rest.
Kiora has been truly insane in our testing at 540. Unfortunately Brimaz hasn't come up as often so I can't compare the two but Kiora is easily the best Simic card IMO. Turns out Maze of Ith (even on a 4-drop) is still really good.
Kiora has been very good for me at 450. She shores up my weakest archetype (Midrange) well, particularly against its weakest match up (control). I think I am starting to agree that she might be the strongest UG card - only Mystic Snake might still be better. She may not be the hero we want right now, but she is the hero we need.
We have not tested BKO, why bother? He will go in.

I may add the new Torch Fiend; I'll have to see how my cube performs when I cut down to 450. I may need it; I may not. Pain Seer is on the cusp.

Not too stoked about Kiora, but if she is cheap enough I'll probably pick her up.

Brimaz performed quite well, landing t3 in Boros aggro and beating down.
Pain Seer never got its trigger off. It either got blocked and died, or it ate removal.
None of the others (Kiora, Kiora's Follower, Spirit of the Labyrinth) were seen in the draft.
