I know it's mostly sub-par as far as black removal goes, but I have a 720 cube and I'm wondering if it's close enough to be playable. It doesn't have any limitations on its creature targets, which is sort of nice.
I played it in my classic cube, but the competition for black removal spells is really high now. Murder is so much better, and even that card doesn't see cube play.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
Fortunately, the card is relatively inexpensive. I think I'm gonna give it a go and see what happens. I like to feature nostalgia when I can, as long as it's good enough for someone to pick and actually put into their deck.
Oubliette is a Journey to nowhere for 1BB. Not that bad.
That's pretty bad. Journey is an okay removal spell in a color that has a lot less removal than black. And Oubliette is a lot worse than Journey. It is to Journey what Cancel is to Counterspell.
We used to play that it didn't target. As an answer to pro black, shroud, etc.. it would be awesome. If I could stand cube errata I would do that one in a heart beat.
All targeted black removals have conditions: not black, not artifact, not Gold, CMC<=3, etc.
Except Murder. Which is an instant and permanently gets rid of the threat. And is still bad.
Oubliette is cool and flavorful (I love it, personally), but it's not good.

What if you need a removal and there is only Oubliette in the 10 cards 3rd pack that the player on your right passes you? You wait for a better one that costs 1 less? No. You take it.
You take it only because that's the removal that the cube designer has decided to provide for you. I'd much rather have it be whatever better removal spell is sitting on the outside looking in.
And ya, it will miss the final 40 a lot of the time because it's not as good as other black removal spells are.

Journey is absolutely not to Oubliette what Cancel is to Counterspell.
I think it is. Good 2 mana removal > bad 3 mana removal. Good 2 mana counter > bad 3 mana counter.
Journey is absolutely not to Oubliette what Cancel is to Counterspell.
Tapping three mana instead of 2 for a black removal is nowhere near as horrible as keeping 3 mana up instead of 2 just to have the opportunity to counter an hypothetic spell.
All targeted black removals have conditions: not black, not artifact, not Gold, CMC<=3, etc.
This one has the benefit to be unconditionnal. That alone could justify its inclusion (even if it wouldn't be better than say GftT).
I don't get this visceral need to play the most powerful cards out there. What if you need a removal and there is only Oubliette in the 10 cards 3rd pack that the player on your right passes you? You wait for a better one that costs 1 less? No. You take it.
Also it is very hard for me to find a reason not to play this beauty I just received last week:
I think it's more the fact that there is more than enough better removal in black to saturate a cube, not that this removal would make it into a deck or not.
Murder can't deal with understructible creatures and lets graveyard triggers resolves. When you're dealing with Reveillark that is important.
Yes. And I don't see any problem in that.
Please tell me you're trolling and actually know the difference between paying 1 more mana for a spell and keeping one more mana open for a counterspell.
Indestructible creatures? Death triggers? Are you kidding? That's nowhere close to being as important as being an instant or having disenchants not cancel your removal.
I know you don't see a problem with that.
Please tell me you're trolling and you actually know that paying 50% more mana for the same effect sucks no matter what kind of spell it is. Your original comment was that it's a 3-mana Journey. My point was that a 3-mana Journey is bad. I don't like paying 3 mana for things that should cost 2 mana. Just like cancel and counterspell.
Do you remember this card?
Oubliette
It is outrageously cool.
I know it's mostly sub-par as far as black removal goes, but I have a 720 cube and I'm wondering if it's close enough to be playable. It doesn't have any limitations on its creature targets, which is sort of nice.

And here are the cards I'd test before I tried it:
Honestly I have no idea how much removal is necessary for a 720 cube, but that looks like a lot. I think oubliette is pretty bad.
-Power level
-Casting cost is hard to read. I've had more than one new player think it only cost BB.
That's pretty bad. Journey is an okay removal spell in a color that has a lot less removal than black. And Oubliette is a lot worse than Journey. It is to Journey what Cancel is to Counterspell.
