Now, this card is never in my cube list. But I always throw some cards that I thought was interesting straight into the draft pool and see what happen. What I find from this card is that it's consistently a 9 damage for 2RRR in aggro and midrange. It's pretty good for a finisher. The problem that I have with this is that getting that 3 red mana, which can be a pain sometimes.
I've played this card in draft and it is conditional, hard to cast, and is quite expensive and thats in a format with no removal, let alone board sweepers. No one is going to feel any Hatred if they lose to your lethal Burn at the Stake.
I support tokens more than most cubes, and it didn't even come close to working for me (unpowered 500). The triple red made it unplayable in the typical white or green token builds, and red has enough more consistent damage spells.
Does anyone have more feedback on this card? We were contemplating upping support for red token based strategies and this is one of the possibilities. I want to try it out, but Fredo feels it is too red and too conditional to be cubabable. I have a feeling that having three creatures on the battlefield is not that rare.
My position: it's only good in a mostly red token deck, and even then it might do nothing depending on the board state. I don't think this card holds a candle to Purphoros and Ogre Battledriver, or even Goblin Bombardment, which are all cheaper, easier to cast and more versatile. I don't understand your fascination with this card, it seems pretty terrible to me
I actually ran this for a few months. I push tokens very hard in my cube, but almost entirely in white and green. As a result, this was never played, even in the dedicated token deck, and R/x aggro tended to want better reach that didn't require a bunch of living little guys hanging around.
It would be, I imagine, a very nice way to signal to drafters that a red token archetype is available, however. It isn't going to be drafted by aggro or most red decks, so it should actually be available to those who want to go deep. (Like Smokestack in Pox, or something.)
Let me know how it goes; it is a huge amount of reach for the right deck...
Actually I've been thinking of doing alternative strategy sort of cube, so, Burn at the Stake would work really well in red with sweepers + defenders...
Yeah the cube is weak but all the colors would be cutoff at the knees, so it balances out.
I'll report back once we've drafted with it a few times. I agree that it's very narrow and it may need to go. We did our first draft with a red token theme last week, but we only drafted 8 players and this was in the 90 cards that weren't available.
We had this in the cube a while back. It was OK. Sometimes you just can't break through for lethal, and this is there for that situation. Furthermore, being able to hit for 9 with three 1/1s is pretty crazy. It definitely can be good. Ultimately it just costs too much. 5 mana is a lot, and a lot can go wrong with your army of tokens by turn 5. That said, I still like the card, and if red ever gets the token support it needs, I could see this making a return alongside the new red god from Theros.
Now we have two Rabblemasters, Najeeli and Hanweir Battailo, Pia and Siege-Gang is anybody else tempted to try this out? I have a feeling we are neering the point where we reach the critical mass needed.
I remember playing this back in the day, it was quite the win-more card with an awful floor. Very hard to justify it when Fiery Confluence exists, and I like any Char / Thundermaw Hellkite variant much more than this.
I would first try to make room for Purphoros, God of the Forge. I thought he was pretty cool when he was released, but eventually put him on the bench because I didn't have enough support. I think nowadays he can represent tremendous damage, is really flexible, and doesn't mind if your dudes die along the way. Burn at the Stake is a little too restrictive IMO.

Purphoros has been a huge succes in our cube. One of the top red picks.
What propably helps a bit is that we draft Rochester, which means that our decks are a bit more streamlined compared to normal booster drafted cube decks.

Ya, because we were all clamoring to include those Giant Spiders after our M10 drafts too.

You need a deck that is very red, rather slow, and has lots of small creatures. It's just way too narrow.

I think he meant a deck with tons of pyroclasms and earthquakes. Sweepers that you can easily play around with large toughness creatures.
