Just another finisher that looses the competition against Kokusho, the Evening Star and Grave Titan? Or may he be a card that can actually fight these two, probably the dragon?
It's good competition for Kokusho. If you only have room for 2 6+ drops (not including Tombstalker) the Wurm is a reasonable choice. Grave Titan is the slam-dunk 1st option. Kokusho and the Wurm each have their upsides, and I think going with either option is fine. If you were going to include a 3rd fatty though, I'd still only use two of these three, and include something like Griselbrand instead. The Whispering One and the Rune-Scared Demon are also decent options as far as 6+ mana fatties go, but I think they lose out to Kokusho, the Wurm and Griselbrand, personally.
I like the card. As cubes generally seem to be getting more creature-oriented, I think it's a very solid black finisher. I'm pretty sure that there are at least some cubes where it's better than kokusho, you just have to find out if your cube is one of them.
I love Massacre Wurm (and probably like it more than Kokusho and Sorin Markov.) Usually kills a dude when it comes into play but usually kills several as there are almost always 2/2s just hanging around; its ability to have pseudo-trample is really good and lets it pass the terminate test pretty decently and races pretty well as well.
(In the cute story bro category: I also saw it kill someone at 14 once from the opponent having Bitterblossom tokens and Grave Titan. )
Massacre Wurm in 2021: a necessary evil to keep aggro and especially green go-wide ramp in check? Or an outdated, triple black expensive creature that nobody is ever happy to maindeck, not even reanimator decks? Been thinking about this card for a few months and tbh I'm leaning towards the 2nd option but other curators wholeheartedly disagree.
Massacre Wurm's still good, but a few cards take up it's slot better. Grave Titan is the premier black six drop that is good to reanimate but also castable. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is better for reanimator as the anti-go-wide target. Archon of Cruelty is the best black reanimate target not named Griselbrand or Grave Titan. I imagine somewhere between 540 and 720, there's still room for Massacre Wurm. The latest iteration of the MTGO Vintage cube was still playing Massacre Wurm, and that's a 540. So yeah, a few cards take it's slot up better, but still a fine card.
Massacre Wurm is good at what it does, but I think it's pretty niche at this point. As a fattie in a reanimator / cheaty face deck, things like Elesh Norn / Dragonlord Atarka / Inferno Titan are generally better, so it's not really necessary as a crowd control fatty outside of larger cubes, IMO.
