I am beginning a YouTube video series that focuses on legacy cube theory and strategy. I posted my third video the other day, which was inspired by a viewer question about whether Tinker or Goblin Welder makes the better first pick. The answer, of course, is Tinker. But I worked up a short presentation on the issue, comparing the cards' relative advantages and touching on the pay-offs that one looks for when drafting either of these cards. I hope that the comparison is useful to those who are less familiar with these cards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko11ej12X-k
Do let me know if you have any suggestions. Also, if you have ideas for similar content, I'd love to hear them!
As part of my Cultic Cube series, I made a video version of my latest cube update so that I could provide brief commentary on the cuts and additions. If you have any feedback on the cube changes or any suggestions concerning their presentation, please do let me know! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaCDhJ5grrw
I put the spotlight on Bramble Sovereign, arguing that you should give it a try. In the video, I look at sweet use cases while trying to give a fair assessment of the card's advantages and limitations. I also consider why the card does not see more play than it does. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfZy4nnKSLw
A cube-focused survey of the good and the ugly of the Ixalan block double-faced cards. (Let's give the bad a miss, shall we?) I promote the idea of jettisoning the rules of Magic in order to run some of the cards pre-flipped as high quality utility lands, ignoring the front sides entirely.
Which titans are hot and which are not for cube? We rank them by power level, we discuss which are appropriate to what sort of cube, and we suggest both higher and lower power alternatives to the titans for your specific environment. This conversation also helps the cube drafter to identify which six drops are windmill slams and which are traps.
In the latest of the Cultic Cube video series on cube theory and strategy, we consider the wisdom of introducing a multiplayer mechanic to a 1v1 environment. The Monarch mechanic fundamentally and powerfully changes Magic's card economy. We look at some of the best enablers for the mechanic for different sorts of cubes.
Signets are contentious in MTG cube. This video shows cube drafters the power of Signets and why they should be a high priority at the draft table. We discuss how to "cheat" with mana rocks, how Signets compare to alternatives, and what sorts of decks want Signets. A follow-up video will address the cube curator and will survey arguments for and against including this class of mana rock in one's environment. Please like the video and subscribe to the channel if you'd like to see more cube theory and strategy content! https://youtu.be/KivhweWfpgg
Part two of the Cultic Cube series on Signets considers why some believe these rocks to be toxic to cubes. I not only offer my approach to the Signets, but I weigh the pros and cons of a few different postures toward them in order to help you make informed an decision about their inclusion in your cube. https://youtu.be/DgrxdXi1bn4
I've started to watch your series, and it's pretty great. If I were to make one piece of constructive criticism, the voice that speaks (I assume it's you) can sometimes sound a little monotonous, but other than that I can't find much else to fault. The production value, the content, what I especially like is the idea that (at least part of the time) you're reaching out to the people who draft cubes but don't necessarily own one - I've found the vast majority of cube content is made for curators, not drafters, so that's real nice.
I always find the signet discussion interesting, no matter who is the one making the argument. As someone who runs all 10 - I guess the reason I don't get burned by this is I don't really support "insta-win" combo, so something like getting Sneak Attack a turn early isn't going to be an issue in my cube.
But I look forward to more videos, this is a fresh new series and I wish you much success!
In 2010, Mark Rosewater, with characteristic enthusiasm, likened creature lands to the iPad. We discuss what he meant by this, which of these you should include in your cube, and when you should draft them. We'll touch on the recently spoiled creature land from Modern Horizons 1, and the new one from War of the Spark. https://youtu.be/5TELNdKfHWQ
Wizards introduced vehicles a few short years ago, but it feels as if we have already seen the best of them. (R.I.P. Weatherlight and Parhelion II). Which are the best vehicles for your cube deck? How highly should you take them in draft? Which belong in your cube? And which of those that might appear reasonable should you avoid like the plague? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j49Oo1q8iho
Cultic Cube #13 is live! Our starting point is a viewer question about Equipment that is off the beaten path and that may serve as archetype role players. We consider a broad swath of fun Equipment which is suitable for more and less powerful environments. https://youtu.be/o-0JsnXgloo
The only bad thing about these videos is that they aren't longer! I wish you would have touched on some of these lesser known equipment in more detail to maybe talk about what they do and how they contribute to certain archetypes and why we might want to consider them for our own cube.
Other than wanting more, I can't say anything bad about this series. Great job and I hope you keep them coming.

Thank you so much for the kind words! And I'm happy to hear that you want more! I write essays for the videos, which I viciously edit until they're often half the length of the first draft. I am finding that about five minutes is what many people are willing to watch. And fair enough! No one wants to settle in to a cube theory video that's as long as an episode of Game of Thrones. It's good to hear from someone who would be willing to listen to a bit more elaboration.
Grind the opposition underhoof! Green ramp is said to be a linear, straightforward strategy, but this is deceptive, as the most typical build is quite fragile. Here we dive into the nitty-gritty of multiple approaches to drafting and building a ramp deck that is resilient and reliable.
Gold sections are hard in #mtgcube! It is equally true, though, that multicolor cards are sweet. This video helps you find the gold cards that work best for your goals and to run them at a ratio that makes sense for your environment.
Planeswalkers are powerful, iconic, and divisive. In this video, I explain why I have dispensed with Planeswalker caps in my cube and why you might consider doing so, too. My thanks to you all for your insightful explanations of your walker philosophy! I am delighted to be able to share a bit of the diversity of approaches that exist to cubing this category of card.
In the latest Cultic Cube, I argue for articulating your environment's parameters in a way that helps to define your goals and to better communicate your aims to others. landofMordor, author of the Strix Scale for rating cube power and speed, joins us!
I fell out of love with Baneslayer in cube. Let's develop a more nuanced argument than the obvious one that she dies to removal. We consider popular cards that exhibit similar weaknesses as BSA, and I suggest cards that might replace these. I realize that this is contentious territory. If my takes are hot, they are, I hope, coolly argued! https://youtu.be/KZKLkBPaK20
We join TeamJbro, cube champion at the SCGCON Winter 2019 and all-time cube trophy leader on MTGO, to tinker under the hood of the MODO Vintage Cube (Summer 2019). How can we better our own cube design by looking to WotC's? And how can we use this knowledge to 3-0 drafts? Jonathan Brostoff talks big plays, finding an edge, and taking down the competition.
Build a cube! It’s an awesome way to share your design vision, build community, and inspire creativity. I explain what I love most about cube design, and I help you navigate obstacles you may encounter on this journey.
’Tis the season! We join TeamJbro, cube champion at the SCGCON Winter 2019 and all-time cube trophy leader on MTGO, to take a quick look at the Dec. 2019 changes to the MODO Vintage Cube and to reevaluate the updated format. Jonathan Brostoff leverages analysis of the cube list to find an edge on the competition and to bring home those trophies!
Draft a better mtg cube deck! This series’ first video establishes the fundamentals of my draft philosophy and offers a new pick order mnemonic. P1P1 the best card in the pack!
Have an idea for content I'd enjoy and think would have some broad appeal. Could you do a video about the origins of cube? Where did this format come from? What did it look like in its earliest days? Was there a moment cube became a commonly recognized format? I've personally run a cube for about a decade and I've known about the format since the late 2000's. I'd love a history lesson on my favorite format.
