When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I listened to the second podcast today and I agree it sounded better (delivery) than the first; however, there seemed to be a small audio issue (clarity/compression) through the whole podcast, maybe due to the online connection during the podcast. The volume seemed to be lower compared to other podcasts on MTGCast as well, so maybe it's something to look into.
The only thing I didn't like in the actual cast content-wise was the avoidance of how a lot of cube owners are choosing to not go with complete cycles of fixing lands. Even if they keep the lands and spells between guilds balanced, a lot of people are forgoing all of the Ravnica bouncelands, Shadowmoor filter lands, or 10th/etc. painlands, in favor of using the ones best suited to that color combination's typical gameplan. This should extend to saying that ranking certain land cycles isn't cut and dry if you do this.
Props for mentioning budget lands. Bouncelands, Painlands, Shards, and Vivids happen to be great for a budget cube. And if the average quality of cards in the cube is lower, the 5CC problem is probably both less intense (no Grim Monolith into Mirari's Wake into Nicol Bolas if they cost too much money) and slower as lands come into play tapped more often than where fetches and original duals are included.
Great job on the podcast guys. I'm looking forward to the next one!
I mainly used it for copyright reasons. I don't think that the podcast would get pulled for using licensed work, but I don't really want to take that chance. Anthony talked about getting a song composed by a friend so that'll probably be used when the song gets done, but I really like the Mega Man-style song for now.
I'm going to record an episode about commons cubes with Adam Styborski (author of "Serious Fun" on the mothership and his common cube blog.)
I'm going to be making an outline over the next few days since we're planning on recording on Wednesday. I've got some ideas brewing (and will get more once I finish this article) in my head, but any topics to cover would be greatly appreciated.
That's pretty damn awesome music. I love me some 8bit.
Sometime in the future, do a podcast on theme cubes, peasant, pauper, everything. Special mentions to the real special ones like kojiro's Artifact cube, The Myr Cube and the Zombie Cube. For serious. But then again, I'm biased because all I think of is Pauper. /points to my sig. See?
Can I somehow order/subscribe/download this podcast in iTunes?
Yes. Subscribe to mtgcast in itunes and it's included there, along with a lot of other good podcasts. If you want further recommendations on which ones are good let me know.
Please do! Also can you tell me how I can subscribe to mtgcast (I really don't listen podcasts and don't know how these things work...)
Here are the podcasts I recommend:
Monday Night Magic (the top podcast from MTGcast)
Limited Resources (a fantastic show about limited)
The Third Power (our cube show)
Top 8 Games (BDM and Mike Flores, though this one isn't regular like the others)
And other podcasts I listen to and like but aren't as must listen as those ones:
In Contention - which if I'm correct Kojiro is a host of.
The Eh Team - One of the more vulgar shows on the network, but a fun listen to 3 canucks and an Oregonian.
Yo MTGTaps - The best named Magic Podcast and a good show focused mostly on standard.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but those are my main recommendations. If you can't figure out how to get them I'll try to help you out later.
People complained about The In contention cube podcast being too long WHICH is totally wrong, the real people who grind out podcasts are the ones who work nights shifts and drive alot for work. Longer podcasts really help fill the void. I like my pod casts being from 1.5-2 hours long. The mana pool can get away with the 2.5 hour podcasts because they are awesome though.
Edit: also going off topic once in a while doesn't really make a bad podcast. It just shouldn't be constant. I feel when off topic stories are started it either A) makes for good entertainment or B) helps you get a grasp of what the hosts are like when they arent talking about One topic so you can feel more familiar with a person, kind of like banter from characters on tv. The only exception is going off topic too complain about something, which is annoying and done too frequently on other podcasts.
I'm a huge fan of the podcast, I can't believe there hasn't been a cast for cubing yet!
There are so many topics to cover, but I would love to hear you guys explain what archtypes you build your cube around. You mentioned that you add cards for specific archtypes in the previous podcast, but which ones are you typically looking at with new cards?
Also a fun little thing to add might be to blatantly rip off Limited Resources and do crack a pack. Each time explain the kind of cube, list the 15 cards and then talk through your first pick.

This is brilliant. I love it. I think the name "crack a pack" fits perfectly.

Totally on board with this. It's a similar exercise, but completely different because you're rating cube cards.
I'd do an unpowered cube though, otherwise you get a ton more "easy" first-pick cards.

I'd do a variety of cubes. I'd like to hear pauper cubes, and powered cubes, and 360 cubes and 1000+ cubes and theme cubes like kojiro's and all different kinds.
Sans power nine (most of the time) I think the picks are as hard or harder.
I think without the power nine-ish (sol ring, library), the top level of cards is a lot more even. I'm more interested in what someone would pick between Keiga, Braids, Student of Warfare, Noble Heirarch, Words of War, and Tangle Wire, than I am with those same picks and a peice of power available. (I probably pick the Wire, because it's one of those cards I just don't allow to pass typically, works in various decks, and if Braids wheels....)

I can't see the problem with using a powered cube. When you are at it you might as well do like top 5 picks or something. So sometimes the first pick is a Sol Ring, but then it's just pick 2-5 that's interesting instead.

Haha, I was thinking of doing this exact thing. That's one of my favorite podcast segments.
Episode 3 was recorded on Wednesday (or Thursday, I forget) but it's now up.
A bit disappointed with it, there were a lot of points that I wanted to make/counter (aggro isn't necessarily easy to make in commons cubes, the first one that I drafted had terribly supported aggro, Rot Wolf being an awful attacker, etc.) but there just wasn't time for it. It may have been because it's the first time that I've ever really interviewed someone and that does show, but aside from that stuff, I think that it went well.
This week's episode will be back to normal, though!
Haven't heard the 3rd one yet but after listening to the 2nd again while driving around with a two friends I noticed something that bugged me. When you guys mentioned a couple of cards (mainly spoiled cards) my friend said, wait whats that? Then I had to either talk over you guys to explain it or pause you and explain it and both ways kinda made the cast a little less fluid to listen too. I think you guys might get too excited about what you are about to say and kinda fly right into a discussion about the card before explaining it. I know it could get old but if at least for spoiled or uncommon cards (not print rarity but play rarity) if you could just pause the conversation for a second and maybe make it clear that you are about to explain the card and say something along the lines of "The card is- Name / CC / Type/ Abilities / P/T", I for one would appreciate it.

Yeah. I've always thought that Pauper had it easy with aggro, but I've come to reconsider that opinion. It's not that aggro was weaker than I imagined, it's that control/midrange is stronger than I imagined. Yes, aggro is more prevalent than normalists because that's just how you win in Limited (which I think Pauper is closer to than any of the other types of cubes in terms of power level), but at the same time, control just has redundancy of tools against aggro. There's no real problem - I don't think I have an issue with control sucking like Adam seemed to have at one point - but I think I really need to play a lot more drafts and actually pay attention to what decks are made to make sure. Tweaking will be needed to support aggro, control and midrange, thanks for sure; it's probably only a very small tweak that will be required, through.
So it's pretty even. Aggro might not be pushed enough, but that requires time to tell.
"This episode's going to be able commons cubes, or Pauper cubes." EARGASM.
This hath given me the inspiration I need to get onto my damned Pauper cube article.
Edit: Dimi Infiltrator. Awesome. In for Soul Manip.
Edit Edit:
I definitely get the wish to add some interesting themes to cube. I don't particularly care at all for Infect, but the specifics doesn't matter. With my original cube, I tried Allies, and my current cube still has streaks of attempts at the Dead Dog archetype (GB midrange that uses Tortured Existence, madness and stuff like that). The problem is that it just never comes together. I still want the Dead Dog archetype to work, but the reality is that themes usually don't.
Awesome podcast, really making my drives to the university way less boring.
Maybe I'm dumb, or it's just because I'm not from America... but what does "The third Power" mean? I know the translation of course, but not where it originates or what it references.

10^3 = Ten to the third power. The third power is often referred to as "cubing" something (ten "cubed" = 10^3) just as squared refers to the second power.
I agree. I'm actually about halfway through the latest one (had to pause it when my commute ended), but I'm digging it. This podcast has become something I now look forward to each week. Keep up the good work, guys!

It's actually from 8-bit collective, a site for people who create chiptunes in NES (and I think SID [Com64] and Amiga) style. It's a song that was made for a Mega Man fan-made game and I think the artist NAILED the mega man style.
