It requires having an active mod 24/7 to be effective on boards as active as these. It just wouldn't be possible without doubling our mod staff and creating shifts.
It's one thread and you wouldn't have to double your staff... Set a time for a mod to read at the most ten to twenty posts a day and approve the ones that are following the rules... I used to own quite a few large forums and you can not expect users to moderate/report posts 100% of the time. You will have to have VB do it for you or just don't allow the thread to come back at all... If you rely on the users to help this will happen again...
Not quite what I meant. The 2 mods now check a couple times a day. I am almost always on to some degree. And I checked into the thread at least 20x daily.
Again I am basing this off of phpBB and it has been along time since I have used vB and vB is by far the superior forum software here. I just checked the back end on my personal phpBB site and I can create a new forum. Give special permissions to regular users so that in order for for any posts or threads created to be seen. It must be approved by the mods first. I am also able to assign specific mods who receive alerts (email/pm) of the need to approve posts/threads. In the mod panel they are able to go to that specific post/thread and either approve or disapprove. In my phpBB forum spam bot posts are kept in a different mod.
If you guys are not able to do that in the currently installed vB or as a separate mod to be installed then keep the thread closed forever because if it means the risk of the entire site being shutdown then I would rather loose one thread then the whole site...
That is a shame because I really enjoyed all the art posted and it inspired me to do my own for my own cube...
The Proxy Thread has always been dangerous, and I never really understood why it was in the Cube Forum. I'll be happy to see it go elsewhere. Destroying it completely seems extremely harsh, though; thankfully, this doesn't seem to be an option that's being considered too much by the moderators.
As far as I can tell, our version of vB3 has a singular moderation queue.
Single queue, enable-able on a subforum basis. The problem right now is that all the crap that disappears when mods use the Unapprove tool to ban a spambot and delete all its posts in one action ends up in the moderation queue, which is accessible only to admins. We'd have to sort spambot crap out from proxy thread posts via checkbox, in a queue that will likely have several hundred crap-posts in it. This is simply not feasible with the staffing levels we have now.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I think a closed thread similar to how the 18+ forum sections work would be a good idea. There are currently enough established members that regularly post there that setting up a close group would be feasible. I've only recently begun to get into making digital alters, and proxies and it would really be a shame to see the thread go.

I don't think this would be good at all, it would be like hiding it from wizards, which is exactly what we don't want. I'm sure many people from wizards have gone through the proxy thread (probably an employee will read this post), and it's definitely best to keep it transparent.
On the other hand, something more like what they're mulling over in standard right now (viewable to all, but only some can post) would be a more realistic idea. I still think that MTGS is better without that thread, as cool as it was.

One of the main concerns is that the proxy thread WAS viewable to all. Lurkers have taken our work to sell on eBay

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
While I'm not as much of a regular in here as some, the proxy thready the largest reason we got into cubing. My group has been out of the game for a LONG time (90s), with only one or two of us keeping up at all in the last few years.
When we got bored of that we were moving on to other games when someone mentioned reading about cube (on mtgsalv). While it was interesting to learn about, it was the proxy thread that caused excitement to print and sleeve and play. We simply would not be cubing without that thread, and we would not be as excited about playing it on a weekly basis without the amazing art that folks did in there. Its literally every game you'll hear someone say "I really love the art on that one...so much better than the original"...Most of our group is very artistic, finding more value in the art and flavor text than errata.
Here's what's intersting...since cubing, our old school, jaded group has gotten so much more back in the game that we're also drafting real cards again, for variety from the cube. Yes, we're buying boosters and doing drafts of current cards. So, there is no stretch of truth that the proxy thread has caused Wizards to make money off of us where they wouldn't have. And, we've got a few newbies into cubing, who are also buying real cards who otherwise never would have been introduced to the game (now looking at a Deckbuilders toolkit and a full set of C/U from M12).
The problem isn't non-official looking cards, and people expressing their artistic side, its the discussion of printing. I believe it possible to be mutually exclusive. If it were possible to limit the thread to sharing of custom cards and artistic exercise, with strict rules about NO...ZERO...NADA discussion on printing...well, yeah.
To me, the interest and popularity of the thread (someone said the single most viewed thread on mtgsalv?) and the sheer amount of passion people have put into it...you almost can't let it go away.
Selling any proxies is illegal. report it to ebay, or if it's not on eBay, report it directly to wizards. I've done it 7-8 times, and invariably you a real email back thanking you, and the cards are taken down.

Is re-opening the thread, cleaning it out, then leaving it as a locked sticky in its last known good state not an option? albeit worse case situation.
This benefits people who would like the information that is now lost. Benefits MTGSalvation by keeping their most popular thread in some form, and probably a thread that brought in members and hits/views.

What you suggest is not practical
Additionally, we've already established that relying on users to report posts is also not a practical option.
