Aggro:
Winter Orb is definatly the pick here. Then we can draft proactively and see what's passed to us. It should be possible to wheel something no matter what colors we go except green ofc.
Control:
Sower of Temptation is the pick i like most here. We don't pass any other great control cards, so it should be possible to wheel a blue card or Solemn Simulacrum.
Midrange:
Hymn to Tourach can fit into both aggro and control decks. This is the pick for the black lovers out there. With this pick it should be possible to wheel Black Knight and/or Anurid.
My vote goes to Sower of Temptation because this pack is so full of aggro, that we are setting most of the other guys at the table up for aggro, and taking control for our self.
Winter Orb. 'Cause I like aggro and it has no color commitment. At worst we end up in control and don't have to worry about one of the worst cards to for us to face.
Future Sight or Sower would be solid, but the other will send the signal that blue is open.
The other option is to take Winter Orb, and then follow whatever aggro signals we get. Hymn leaves us less committed to the aggro route, but cements us in black (more than likely).
As much as I hate it, Winter Orb seems like the pick here. We're a lock to wheel something W or R agro here. I like Sower/Tutor a lot, however, if you know something about who you're drafting with (i.e. how drafted blue is).
I have to admit, if I was drafting this myself, or doing a team draft, I'd probably go for Winter Orb, for many reasons that have already been stated. However, of all the first pick worthy cards, I think starting with Future Sight will lead to the most interesting discussions, so I'm picking that.
I don't know if it was the FTV picture that threw me off or that I looked at the cards too quickly but I completely missed that Mox Diamond was in the pack. I'm still sticking with Winter Orb but I can definitely see a strong argument for the Diamond.
Mox Diamond fits into everything. Our group drafts always seem to try to lock into a linear strategy a bit early for my tastes, so I don't think the Orb is the best pick here.
I would agree with not locking into aggro if the basis was on a creature, like figure, student, jackal, guide, ect. Those are not strong enough to choose. And the way I see it is, its a colorless card, the other cards we're giving up are not going to be that much of a determinant, that picking this one card to start will end our chances at a solid deck.
In addition, not only does it start the solid foundation for a possible aggro deck, it keeps it out of the hands of our opponents. While yes I agree Future Sight, Mox Diamond, and SS are very difficult to pass p1p1, I'm not exactly that scared of those cards if we do end up being aggro. I'm not saying they aren't good, but I would hate to be on the receiving end of a winter orb.
That's my reason behind winter orb.
Again, thanks for starting this, I miss these things

Also, was I counted as voting for Mox Diamond? In my last post I only said that I liked Mox Diamond and Solemn Simulacrum. My vote goes to the Diamond.

You are right, but you are talking 1 artifact, out of I think 8 40 card decks. That gets around our 1 card. But what else is going to? Maybe moxen? I did check to see if this was powered though

Solemn Simulacrum. Goes into anything whereas winter orb is confined to a narrow archetype.Edit: My pick is Winter Orb. Killem swayed my vote

I think there's a case to be made for Mox Diamond being good against Winter Orb. :3
