Don't know enough about Historic or Pioneer, but someone at my University made a Frontier-Cube and it worked great for them he said.
Personally, I don't see the appeal of making something thelike, since I don't think R&D makes the best decisions as of late. It just seems arbitrary to me, and I'd rather draw custom lines (which one does either way due to the limited space in a Cube) to cater strategies I find interesting. Might be an okay starting point though from where one can branch out.
The Historic Cube on Arena was actually pretty fun. It was a bit grindy, but that doesn't necessarily mean not fun. I think if your card pool consists of mostly new cards, then going with a Historic legal (or even say, Amonkhet forward) cube could still offer options for different viable and fun strategies.
