Can someone answer a couple of questions about red X burn spells for me?
Why have red X burn spells fallen out of favor? I notice no one runs Fireball, Devil's Play, etc. Doesn't Red benefit from having a finisher that can burn someone for the last few points of damage?
As a follow-up, I notice a lot of people do run both Earthquake and Rolling Earthquake. Do these spells effectively become Fireball replacements in red aggro? Is the idea that if you need to burn the last few points of life from someone, you're going to have more life than them, so why not use Earthquake to finish them off? Is Earthquake run in many lists because it's the both the finisher I mentioned, and a utility sweeper?
1. I think red burn has gotten so cost effective over the years that it's harder and harder to find room for Blaze variants nowadays. If you run some of the infinite mana combo shenanigans in your cube, I think it's a good idea to run a couple of the red Fireballs. But cards like Burst Lightning can provide a similar flexibility/scalability at a more cost-effective rate. Plus, the "big red" decks capable of generating big Fireball values have acquired a lot more tools over the years, and they're happier casting Chandra, Flamecaller or the like. But I wouldn't fault someone for running a Blaze variant or two in their lists; there are several that are perfectly fine inclusions.
2. Both Earthquakes are in because both Earthquakes are just great cards. They're cost-effective sweepers that can also kill off an opposing 'walker at the same time, and that's becoming more and more important. Between 'walkers and big-butted creatures, it's easier than ever to create asymmetry with Earthquake effects. They can be used as a finisher in an aggro deck in a pinch, but that's not really their primary use.
3) I wouldn't count the Earthquakes towards my total number of Channel targets, no. But usually between the finisher robots, the 1-2 great Eldrazi and the big 'walker finishers, there's more than enough good stuff to make Channel worth inclusion.
2) The scalability and ability to hit PWs is key here.
3) big Eldrazi? Yes. Quakes? Eh, not really.
Speaking of Earthquake, wtwlf123, I’m mildly surprised you don’t run an altered art (to get rid of the white border) 5th edition RKF version. I always loved his art and that pic is swaaag...
Anyone on the Cube forums going to be attending BGG.con? (boardgamegeek.com convention) I'll be hosting a Cube draft event there, it will be our 5th year.
Also, thanks for the replies above. I'm going to test Channel, I've left out the Blaze variants, and I'm stoked about deciding to finally include the Portal functional reprints. If someone doesn't go Wildfire this year, I'm going to be disappointed!
I wasn't sure if it deserved a thread but I was wondering if anyone is excited for Un-Stable? I am really hoping we get a few more cube cards out of it, and pretty optimistic since MaRo said on his podcast that there is some cards in it specifically designed for cube. I don't know if that means more Booster Tutor, Blast from the Past or something new altogether.
The basic lands interesting as well so I will be looking to pick up one of each, and hopefully we will get some zany non-basics as well.
Yeah definitely excited. Beyond the cube stuff which is always interesting and pretty unique when you're willing to run them, the flavor of the un sets is so well done.
Yea I'm hoping the flavour is good, it sounds like less about in-jokes & asses and more about the humour of the world. It will be interesting to see what they do with silver border mythics, I have no idea what a pushed mythic that can't effect older formats look like but I am excited to see. I hope they take a few risks in terms of power level since its a relatively safe place to make mistakes.
I look forward to seeing what weird mechanics they have in store, but I wonder if New World Order and modern set design will take away from the zanyness though. It's my understanding it will be less about random 1 off cards and more about a "cohesive" draft experience revolving around tribes, I guess it's probably better for the draft experience (planning to get a box) but I do like looking at the off the wall randomness of the older sets.
How many cards do you think we will get? I'm hoping for 5-6 weird new cards, maybe a staple level card.
I liked the in-jokes & butt humor, but as long as its down well I'm excited for whatever. Un-sets and Time Spiral are both cool for their take on nostalgia, and I hope we get the same.
MaRo has already referenced Unstable's Cube application once, and while it may have been tongue in cheek I doubt it was by accident. This is probably one of the few sets where power level can be pushed since it's legal no where, and while I imagine it will be more silly than powerful there has always been some stuff that's great when translated over.
5-6 cubeable options with 1 staple is what I'm expecting too. I imagine it will be more like the second un-set vs the 1st, as the latter was more silly than competitive.
I think Mana Drain is right on the cusp. I choose not to run it. Channel is the other one that's right there, and I could see either of them being in or out.
It's like how Sol Ring and Mana Crypt are honorary power, but Mana Vault and Grim Monolith ride the line. I play Monolith but not Vault. This is murky area for unpowered cubers, but after proxying all the power and testing it out for a while, we quickly found the cards that just didn't fit for our group.

If a mod wants to delete this, I understand. It probably belongs more so in the cube list forum. But I felt this was different enough where I might be able to get away with a post here.
I have spent a stupid amount of time on this project, and would be thrilled if you fine people could take a look. At some point I might do an article style write up of this that talks some about the design and development history of this project. But now is not that time. I still have way too much play testing to do.
Anyways, this is my Bohemian cube. A beta-themed proxy cube that attempts to blend the modern with the old in order to create an experience that resembles the beginning years of Magic while updating them to the sensibilities a modern magic player.
I'm sure there are cards that are too strong, too weak, too "modern" and too old. I'm sure not everyone will like each piece of art (which is kind of the point), and I'm sure some people will find the experience of reading old syntax with new art too confusing. But still any direct feedback you could give on your impression of this would be amazing. Especially if you find any typo's or anything incorrect about any of these cards. (Earlier today I noticed I forgot to make sure that the cycling lands etb tapped.)

What's the best way for a cube noob to start putting his cube together? Any pointers/resources for a beginner? I've been playing the game since inception and have amassed quite the collection, most of which is just sitting in a box, so I figured I'd try to put them to use. Budget not an issue.
The best advice I can give you is to just finish something. Even if it's not 100% perfect. It's so easy to get worried about the small details to the point where you never finish something. But if you get something out you can always edit it later.

Is Mana Drain too powerful for an unpowered cube? Thinking about picking one up since it was reprinted.

Agreed. I think Monolith is probably the best mana acceleration you can run if you want an upowered cube - and that's even pushing it.
