besides the eldrazi tokens there are also a number of cards that make tokens that are copies of other creatures, ajani goldmane, gutter grime, mitotic slime, and a little further back the future sight spellshapers like llanowar mentor and cloudseeder. so i disagree that this is a problem. it's not as common as tokens with no text or a single ability, but complicated cards are not as common as simpler cards with less text in general. it's not something they'd shy away from if they felt that the flavor was good.
in this case i think it would say something like "put a 0/1 green Dryad Forest creature land token onto the battlefield" which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. i could see it possibly being printed but it's certainly a bit odd.
The most complex one is the Ajani token and that's at mythic rarity. The otherss you mentioned are pretty simple, but so is an 0/1 green dryad that counts as a forest.
Yeah, good point. I can see this getting printed. I like the card a lot.
That black hymn/verdict/quad edict/double sorin's vengeance card that costs 3 mana is the most ridiculously stupid broken card that's been suggested in this thread. Terrible design, obvious over-the-top brokenness and no flavor. That card's so insane that it needs reminder text on it that lets you know you can kick your opponent right in the junk when it resolves.
Not really.
It is a balance. If you play it turn 1 with a ritual, its a 3 cc hymn, as they won't have anything else to do. If you play it turn three, ok, great, you get a hymn, and possibly the chance for a land. If you are hitting a green deck (shocker black hate green? no way!), then they will pay for it, late game, they may have no cards in the first place.
Typical response, which is fine, I don't expect much from the regulars except, broken this, broken that. Its a cube card. Singleton. One-off, uno. Not going to see the light of day in any real set, where it could be 4x of, but again, like a broken record, I've explained my position a billion times over, yet the broken speeches still come out.
Its powerful. Its not going to be nearly as consistence as you think it will be. And if it is SOOO bad ass, then it would be worth tutoring, which then wastes time, as the your opponent empties their hand.
I'll concede the cost could go up to 4 mana, and maybe drop the life/loss/gain to 2 life instead. Otherwise, its alright.
The card is poorly designed and ridiculously broken. Double-random discard for 3 mana? Good enough. Lets add on an double (or quad?) edict clause (that magically misses tokens...) if you hit lands? Wow, that's completely broken. Lets add on a 10-point life swing each time a creature dies? Now this is just stupid. Completely stupidly broken, unfun and poor design. Sorry bro, but that card was just awful in every way.
the card is over the top, too much is going on. i like a lot of your cards, killem, and my favorites are in my custom cube. but this was just not a good design in my opinion. a good rule of thumb is if you can simplify it and it's still a good card, you should simplify it. to be honest i only really like complex designs when they are communicating a single flavor concept (like form of the dragon, which would be unnecessarily random if it didn't illustrate a single idea).
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

The card is just so inelegant, which also turns people off. Do this one simple thing, then IF condition, do another thing, and IF that causes 2nd condition, do more?
Magic is random enough, having a random effect with another random effect that triggers off it a random amount of the time which can randomly trigger another effect is just too damn much random for one card.
And when this card 'goes off' it is almost certain to spell defeat for the player who got hit. Down 4 cards and 10 life? for 3 mana? But only sometimes - on the roll of the dice? If you lose to that, do you feel outplayed? Like you deserved to lose? It is hard to justify a card that is that swingy with so little skill involved.

I loved reading his rant about how we're all wrong though and his card was completely fair.
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.

I really like the idea of this spell. To be balanced it should be "draw two cards" though. Else it's just to easy to make a lockdown with this card alone - counter all until your opp draws a land. Next turn same thing... That's fairly broken and not especially fun. With draw two cards it would still be good and quite a bit more fair.
how about this, for those steamflogger boss lovers (including me)
1RU Tinker Mage RU,T : Create a Contraption, that Contraption has T, Sacrifice this contraption: Counter target spell unless owner pays2. Contraption deals 1 damage to you.
2/2
I would absolutely love this. I assume contraption will an artifact-specific subtype? (So a contraption token would automatically be an artifact)
As to power levels, I think this should probably be a force spike not miscalculation. It is far too easy to just lose outright to this guy as he builds a wall of virtual counters at no cost.

@Killem2: If you've ever read any of MaRo's design columns (which I'm sure you have based on how much you enjoy creating cards), remember that it's always the most difficult to call your own babies ugly. If everyone here is saying that the card is overpowered and poorly designed (me being in the same boat), then that probably means it is. Instead of getting mad at the critiques, try to understand why they are thinking that. Saying we know nothing about design philosophy or what a well designed card looks like does nothing for your cause.
Next card:
Clandestined Treaty 1WU
Enchantment
Noncreature spells you control cost 3 less to cast.
Creatures you control can't attack. Victory lies between the lines.
You think this is colored correctly and good enough to see play?

It would be an artifact type no doubt.

I think the first effect is too strong in a deck with only high end finishers, which is what a blue/white card will usually be found in.
