Haha thats one more Mutavault that is in a cube. Talking about Mutavaults, I have been keeping half an eye on their numbers and locations (which is easier than it sounds considering there are only 200 and they were released in the UK) and I know for a fact there are at least 6 in cubes, and another 20 owned by my playgroup. There are at least another 40 in the UK, 4 in Brazil, I saw another 10 at BazaarofMoxan. Taking into account unknown European copies, plus probably at least 10 that are in never moving collections there must be less than 120 to go around US, Canada and Japan. You guys must have to pay through the roof for them. I miss the day when my mate could not shift 4 for $150.
These things are getting harder and harder to come by, they are getting moved into people that won't get rid of them anymore. They'll go the way of imperial seal by the end of this year I'm sure. Especially if it starts becoming popular in modern now that creature decks are more viable with punishing fire gone. I thought it was ludicrous when I paid 140 for mine

Want to Cube but don't have one? Check the map if anyone is in your area and get cubing!
Yeah, I traded about 140 in cards for mine at the first SCG Invitational; also got a Ravages of War, a Chinese Foil Sword of Fire and Ice, and other goodies from the same person. The fact that they retail for 400 now is stunning.
They were also given away at certain conventions (ike PAX East/West) as well as events like the Richie Proffitt memorial tournament
Ya, it's the most expensive piece in my cube right now, although I've had some pretty high offers for some of the unique altered stuff that can't really be replicated (like my Land Tax).
Yeah, they exploded in price with the advent of Modern. Most places are sold out at prices higer than 200.
I think it is the now the most expensive card in my Cube, but it is hard to price some of the foreign stuff. (No power, etc.)

Then at $200 I couldn't justify getting the Foil-Full Art Mutavault.. And now I wouldn't even bother trying to attain one at the $400 price point.
I think Moat is the most valuable card in my cube. Followed by CE Black Lotus, Mana Drain, Juzam, Library..
The only pimpage I do now is to try to attain every MTG-created special foil available (Judge, FNM, Duels, etc). In terms of Judge foils, I'm only missing Wasteland, Sinkhole, Vendilion & the Sword of F&I.. Other foil cards come secondary. Unfortunately money is always the issue when it comes to pimping the cube..
I'm not that interested in altered art.. YET. What does an average altered art cost anyway from the likes of Cardkitty or Klug??
Somewhere between $35-$75 + the card + shipping, depending on the detail/complexity of the work. Find an artist you're interested in, get an idea in your mind of a card you want altered, and PM them for details.

Thanks WTWLF,
What do the artists use to alter the cards? eg what paints, pencils, etc? Does the paint stick out, or smudge? As much as I seen scans and photos, I've never actually seen or touched a real altered art..
Can you also provide names of Altered Artists and their contacts? Much appreciated!
Eric Klug does a lot of alters, and has done some informative articles about it. I'm pretty sure he is on Gatheringmagic.com as well as his own blog, klugalters.blogspot.com
Thanks WTWLF,

The artists typically use very thin layers of acrylic paint to alter the cards. It's not noticeable when you're handling them sleeved. Well, with good artists anyways. Newer artists tend to have much thicker paint on the cards.
My personal favorites are CardKitty, Klug, Poxy14, Yawg07, Demonium and Masamune, but there are a lot of good alter artists out there. Go to the "Altered Art Thread" in the "Artwork" subforum and browse around. When you find artists with work you like, PM them for details on commissions.
$20-30 + the card itself is reasonable.. Has there been cases where your alter was ruined by the artist, or the result is not up to your expectations/standards?

No. Well, not really. There have been a couple times where I've asked for small corrections, and the artist is willing to take care of them for me.
Ask for a scan before they ship the card back to you. Always.
This has been a good week for my cube. Thankfully when big tournaments like the StarCityGames Open run through town, the trades can commence! I picked all these up this weekend. All foil of course (except the Sylvan Library).
Only Steam Vents left in the shockland department.

I was having trouble deciding which Dark Confidant to go with. I do really like old frames, but I also like earlier edition foils. The deciding factor ended up being what my trade partner had available. I probably would have gone with the Judge promo if he had that version instead. Good thing he didn't have both versions
Im down to around 25ish foils left to acquire. But I haven't made any progress on the power.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.

A decent alter takes 2-4 hours to do. At $20-$30 a card you are essentially paying the artist minimum wage to alter a card. Even less if you consider the fact that supplies comes out of the artist's profit margin.
Thanks WTWLF,

When I do alters I use Fluid Acrylic paints. They have the consistency of heavy cream and dry relatively fast. I've never had a problem smudging. The difference in flexibility and thickness is pretty darn unnoticeable to.

Funnily enough it is the Legends Sylvan Library out of all those cards I am the most envious of.
Original Chrome Mox looks lovely as a foil.

Legends Sylvan Library is so sick looking, some of the coolest art in cube. Foil Bob rules too.

Also, probably the prettiest Jade Mage in existence is in my C/U cube. It's a solid card, it stays on the table and looks AWESOME.
What do you guys think of the thin-frame-left alters here? I really like them and I might get a Mulldrifter altered that way...
