let's get this thread going again! it's been years, but finally picked up some of the OG foils I've had my eye on for a while for my powered un-cube: specifically Entomb and Cryptic Command, as well as a few "modern" updates I hadn't got around to adding, like Thundermaw and Walking Ballista.
Not really. Living in Europe makes the Secret Lairs a no-brainer to not obtain, since the shipping is so expensive. Also, I actually love the original art of Damnation over pretty much any art they might ever release, since it reminds me of Chibaku Tensei from Naruto. I guess the only artwork I would take over it would be something depicting the Circles of Hell as in the Divina Commedia by Alighieri.
Don't get me wrong, the Seb McKinnon Secret Lair looks absolutely amazing!
Regarding the "Metal" Secret Lair - I'm no fan. Too much of a style-break from a usual Magic card for me. If I wanted something similar, I would ask a friend to make me an altered art. This way I also have a nice memory of my friend coming along with the card.
Just the foil Bob Ross one. Always hoped they could somehow get his art on some lands, and secret lair is the perfect place for them. Pretty happy with this one.
I got a foil Box of Rocks and Party Hard, Shred Harder. Unattended foils will curl where I live, but as long as I keep them double-sleeved before they start to pringle, it's fine.
I like the wackiness of the Chromatic Lantern in the Box, and am splitting the rest of the lair w/ a couple others. I ordered the metal one just for the Trophy. I considered the Seb one, but I really like the versions of Damnation and Sower that I already have, so didn't want to order it just to have them sit around.
I ended up getting just the foil Seb Mckinnon - I like some of the Bob Ross lands, but not all of them, and $40.00 for 10 basic lands was a tough sell.
I'm back putting a cube together after an extended absence from cubing! I have my cube rebuilt, but trying to figure out the best way to bling it out. I totally realize this is a first world problem. My question is - when blinging out a cube, do you feel reprint foils in the new borders are higher or lower on the bling spectrum than putting that same card in its original old school printing with the old borders?
I do kinda like seen g the original expansion represented, but the foils are pretty too.
I agree that old border foils typically look better than new border foils. That's especially true of foils printed in the last year or so. However, it's all subjective. Bling your cube with the versions of cards that you like best!
I would rank original non-foil borders above new border foils.
On a similar note, I'm interested in what people think of Timespiral Remastered old border treatment of new cards. I am somewhat hyped for a few, but I realised that this is only the case for cards from either supplemental products, from products that I have no attachment toor ones that just fit into old border.
The first category would be Palace Jailer (from Conspiracy), the second Young Pyromancer (from a core set) and the third Yawgmoth (who really belongs into the world of old border). Everything else I don't want, even though I love old border. I would never exchange my Lorwyn foil Ponder with this new Ponder. Not because it's foil, but because Ponder comes from Lorwyn and I remember playing the card in the old days.
I first realised being pedantic about that when I bought an extended art Mulldrifter from Commander Legends and realised that I don't want to play the card over my Lorwyn Mulldrifter.
While my actual preferences vary from card to card, my overall preferences are old border foil > 93/94 nonfoil (The Dark or earlier) > promotional foil > other new border foil > Ice Age-Urza's Saga nonfoil > newer nonfoil.
There are always exceptions, and they'll vary from one cube designer to another. My favorite Wasteland art is the Zendikar Rising Expeditions art, and the frame is also neat, so I'm planning to pick one of those up instead of tracking down the old-border foil.

What do people here think?
I love the old border in general - I will likely take a look at what I get in my Time Spiral packs and decide if I want to move any of them to old border. I think we agree in that I like to have the card represented in the cube with its original printing. For me it shows the history of Magic captured in my cube.
However - there are some cards that seem to fit the old border really well. People complained when the art style changed on Magic Cards but have you noticed how some of that more "modern art" just looks right when in the old border? Kinda neat. I think my favorites in that vein are Solemn Simulacrum, Flickerwisp and Remand.
I don't know how many will make it into my cube, but glad they exist. Im sure people who have "old border only" cubes are going to have a field day if they decide to include them.
as far as foiling... some cards like Najeela, the Blade-Blossom the newer etched foiling might be better than the original when you look as the cost difference, and its a way of having a different style of foil that most other cards don't have to offer.
as far as time spiral goes some look good, some look really funky and off to me though. It will probably come down to $ and how bad the pringle affect is...
Just opened my cube after about a month and all of the Seb McKinnon foils were pringles. I know foils curl over time, but geze....
Sad to hear that.
I finally found a european seller with some secret Lair stuff, so I got a Bob Ross Swamp and the SebMcKinnon Sower of Temptation. Shied away from foils though and just got the normal ones. Next to the curling, I also think the modern foiling does not look as good.
Haven't shared anything since... *checks*... wow, 2016 apparently. Time flies.
Anyway, since I now own a scanner I went to the trouble of scanning all the cards I altered through the years (well, those I still cube with at least) and uploaded them to CubeCobra. Feel free to have a look! There's 220 of them in the cube right now (6 of which double-sided). 2020 was the suckiest year ever but it was a good one for altering magic cards

Did you manage to get them straigh somehow?
