I'm interested in designing a custom wooden box for my cube (somewhat similar to Wtwlf123's). Here are some key design points I want to tackle:
A hollow wood box w/ two lanes, w/ metal hinges that opens up across the longest edge
Wooden tabs that slide into premeasured grooves along each lane. Each tab will have a mana symbol inscribed on the upper right corner of both sides designating which sections are on both sides.
The inside of the box will be lined with a undecided material. I need something that won't destroy (catch) the sleeves as I slide them in and out for play.
EDIT: An area to store dice/pads/pens.
Everyone's encouraged to post any design modifications or features they'd like to see in the box. I do need some help with the measurements before I can create this in CAD though. Since I don't have access to my cards at the moment (and won't for about 4 months), I'll need someone with KMC & Perfect Fits on their cards to supply me with some measurements of the following, in inches:
65 cards in perfect fit and KMC sleeves.
70 cards in perfect fit and KMC sleeves.
105 cards in perfect fit and KMC sleeves.
200 cards in perfect fit and KMC sleeves.
A pack of KMC sleeves.
I'd appreciate any help/feedback anyone is willing to give!
I'd be SUPER grateful if you could get me the (length x width x heighth) of your whole cube! That way I can divide your measurement by 500 and get close to exactly what each cards l x w x h is to create the specs I'm looking for. Also, once I'm done, I'd love to send you what I came up with for your honest opinion on the design and possible flaws it might have. Let me know man!
All that matters when you're talking to the carpenter is the minimum interior dimension.
My 500 card section is 13 1/2" long x 3 3/4" wide x 2 3/4" tall. Then I have a separate 4 1/2" section for the lands (with the same W/H dimensions). And there's a 1/2" wood divider between the two sections.
The results of the interior of the box using those dimensions is:

That's a beautiful box. How much did it cost to have made?
Man, that's a nice box. I want that for my cube. But if I'm spending that much money, I'll somehow want a Goyf or Force of Will to complete my cube first. This suck.

And word. I had to wait until my cube was finished before I could start spending cash on pimping my storage.
I'm glad this thread got started, I've been thinking about this kind of thing for a little while. I sold a spare Tabernacle over the weekend, and I think I want the proceeds to go towards some proper cube storage (the Mirage gift box from 1996 is only going to hold up for so long).
I don't know much about types of wood though, does anyone have suggestions for which type would be best for this kind of box? I was thinking Cherry or something for its nice color...
I might do the same here. I have all the tools, and the materials. Time.. I don't have time though :(. Building a computer case out of wood was a pain in the butt.
Here is what I've been using for my cube, and my decks that I play with, it's rough but I made it from my sister's old generic toy makeup/jewelry kit.
Its what I use now, I've already gutted it again, I've primered the outside white witha couple coats, I'm gonna keep coating though until its completely white. Then I am going to free hand some sort of magic art, I think its wide enough that I can probably put about three pictures on the front and back and just have them dip over the sides.
I know I do want Firestorm on it, but still trying to decide on the rest. I have to glue hard wood dividers some time. This will hold my normal cube and my pauper cube.
It'll get painted with acrylic paint, then polyurethane.

If you're going for nice color, you should look into purple heart. It is on the expensive side, but it would give the box a big wow factor.
I think I'll make myself a box over christmas break. My dad has all the tools I need and more in his wood shop. I just need to draw up the designs now.

Cherry is pretty good, I personally would lean towards walnut though. Both are rather pricy as far as wood goes (annoying fiscally, but well worth it).
If you choose to mix woods, I don't have much experience with cherry, but I can say that maple and walnut have similar grain sizes (but maple is a softer) and work very well together.
Either Cherry or Walnut would be my suggestions. Cherry takes a dark finish very well and will mature well with age and lends nice red undertones to whatever finish you choose. Walnut is also quite durable but will start out much darker.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

I ended up going with the Cherry, and it turned out great! It's been about a year since I had it made (o_0) and the wood is darkening nicely. Solid and stylish.

Ah ok. Did you give them the specs or did it just happen to fit all the right stuff.

There's a lot of "give" in double sleeved cards, so even though they're snug, they come out in the first pinch.

My sig links to my cube, there are pics there.
Speaking of which, that thread is in dire need of an update. I don't even have M12 updates in there, yikes...
that box looks pretty good. I like the slide-top, I would not have thought to use that on a card box.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did it run you?
