I have not seen any talk about this card. What are people's thoughts about it. I am currently thinking about putting a pair in the sb for against the mirror
I was just reading up on yesterday's SCG open, and have been working on a similar change that Owen made, removing temples. I too have found too many swamps though. He said he'd like to cut a swamp for anything. Since I just got my playset of Deathrite Shaman I thought, why not toss one in my MB. It seems to play nicely with pack rat and all the removal and discard spells we use. Gonna test it out I think. Almost makes me want to push 2 into the deck, dropping a devour flesh or ultimate price
Other options to fill that single space
- pitching needle
- ultimate price
- duress (which would then open a slot in the sideboard)
- read the bones (big fan of this card, scry before draw is awesome)
Not a fan overall of whip of Erebos, but I guess it could take the spot. I just never feel it wins me games I'm not already winning.
So I think the biggest problem with DRS in this deck has been where it fits into the mana curve. The deck typically aims to either play a scry land on turn 1 or Thoughtseize. Adding in DRS might make too many 1-drops in a deck that often wants to play a tapped land on turn 1.
However, this latest article on TCG ( http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=11883 ) features a deck (the second one in the article) with no scry lands. The deck did really well, but I feel like the lack of scry lands means it should have a minimum of 8 solid 1-cc spells to play on turn 1, so as to make the maximum use of the turn. Thoughtseize can fill half that role, but perhaps DRS is a good choice for the other half? It synergizes nicely with Pack Rat, returning value from the cards discarded. It returns double value for Thoughtseize or Duress, being able to make use of the cards the opponent discards as well.
