How do you fair against GR? I feel like Ashiok gives you a constant stream of creatures, but removal-wise, does Devour Flesh help you? Do you often find yourself happy to have it?
Essentially, its the same list I posted last page, but -1 Drown in Sorrow, +1 Doom Blade in SideBoard. Or do you think I go down to 2 Devour Flesh, and put in an additional Doom Blade, thus running a full 4 in the 75.

I think we've talked about Nykthos in MBD before. I understand its potential upside once we have 2-3 permanents on the board, and I'm sure you understand that it can disrupt our early curve, especially into T3 Nightveil. Let's just leave it at that, unless you feel there's more to add.
Other than that, the only difference in our 75 is that I run one less Devour Flesh, and one more land. Sideboard vs main is basically a meta call, so cheers.
For two-mana removal, I run 3 Bile Blight and 3 Doom Blade main, with Devour Flesh in the side. As Blood Baron seems to be fading away (and since Thoughtseize, Lifebane Zombie, and Erebos answer it well, anyway), I might drop Devour entirely, in favor of Dark Betrayal or Ultimate Price.

I personally would not replace devour flesh. Yes it is true devour flesh has less of an impact VS MUD and aggro swarm decks (and doomblade/ultimate price is better vs those decks); however, it is also the only removal currently that is universally usable against almost any deck (outside of control). Against GR it's not "the best"; however it slows down their mana production early game. I will usually always cast devour flesh turn 2 against GR if they have a mana dork in play.
From my experience... they key is not to hold onto devour flesh for late game (unless they are BW and you need it for barons). You want to cast it turn 2 and play a threat (underworld connections, specter, or in my case ashiok) turn 3.
On a related note: how do you fair vs control? I'm at a loss in that matchup... not sure how to handle it.
I see what you're saying- I do love Devour Flesh, I just have always felt like in the hand-vomit matchups, its a terrible card. It still is one the best removal spells currently I believe.
As for Control, I've never had problem with control, but I also have only played against it a few times- maybe, 6 or 7. Also, the guy that plays it at my lgs is super bad. Like, he tried to tell me Kiora is a horrible card for Maze's End, and that Courser of Kruphix is a terrible card. 0/10 would not high-five.
I have yet to play a control match since BNG, so I really can't say how it is. Should be 60/40 us, especially after SB. The fact that we can Turn 1 Seize, Turn Two Duress, Duress is really painful for them. And yes, I've really done that against a control player. He scooped when me missed a land drop turn 4. I actually always kind of want to put Lifebane in for two reasons- it lets me see their hand, which is always mean against Control, and it gets through Elspeth tokens. Idk, maybe its not a good card against them. Wish I could be more help.
@Charlieguide; I know it messes with the mana, but god I really love the card in this deck. We'll probably always disagree on this point, but that's life, right

Control is my hardest matchup... mostly because of top decking. Once they draw a sphinx... or two... I really can't come back from that.
Overall the matchup is probably closer to 50/50 than I've experienced (since the vast majority of game conclusion comes down to top deck draws). Since I splash blue in my deck, I'm thinking of including notion thief to side in instead of zombie... but I'm not even sure if thats the right call. So confused with regards to this matchup.
In regards to devour flesh: yea it does seem like a bad card against decks with 'hand-vomit matchups' but even against those decks... it usually equates to 2 less damage your taking. (which can still be the difference between living and dying). Moreover I've found that most "skilled" players will see MBD and play around biles/infests, making those cards less powerful (though still more powerful than devour flesh).
Another thing: BW is still a thing. Yes barons have fallen out of favor; however, against those decks you need x4 devour fleshes. I view the benefit of taking out devour fleshes for doom blades does not justify the risk. Of course that is also meta dependent. If I knew I would face zero decks with barons or hex/proof guys, I could see cutting 2 devours for 2 UPs. But in my meta.... I currently can not. Additionally people have started playing BuG with the 4/3 guy (forget its name) that you can give death/touch and hexproof to as well as scry 1 everytime something dies. That's also a thing in my meta.
If you can get a connections online against control, then you have a huge advantage. Between Specter and Connections, I find you can keep advantage most of the time. Connections is key though. Since you're playing B/U I could definitely see Notion Thief.
And yeah, I'm not certain if I go up to a full 4 DF though. I like 3, but if I see a lot of BBoV or Reaper of the Wilds (the 4/5 you mentioned) I'd probably go up to 4. I mostly moved it because my lgs meta is 70-80% G/R.
~X
P.S. Maybe you can try a copy or two of Sanguimancy against control? Idk how it would fair, but I feel like the card could be pretty dirty if played well.

Yea. From my experience DF is ranges from OK to GOOD vs GR. I've never had an issue with it being a dead card, unless they are dropping a creature a turn. (which hey, even if it was a doom blade I would have difficulty keeping up with xD)
After experimenting with Monoblack Aggro (less Specters and UC, more Herald of Torment, Rakdos Cackler & Tormented Hero) I went back to the traditional build because I miss the card advantage provided by UC. Just won 1st over 6 rounds with this:
I decided to maindeck Doom Blade because I've been seeing so much R/G lately, and wanted to have a stronger G1. The tradeoff with this is that my G1 against the mirror is much, much worse since I have 3 "dead" cards (they still hit Mutavault) - especially with the more traditional MBC builds (4 BB-4 Downfall-2 Devour FLesh).
Oh, and those scrylands should've been U/B or B/W. I wanted to play an MBC with Red for Rakdos' Return and Slaughter Games, but I had Overgrown Tombs instead of Blood Crypts in my bag and didn't realize I didn't switch my scrylands until I drew my opening hand.
I beat Green Devotion (thank god for Doom Blade main!) quickly, before losing to R/G in Round 2 (I boarded wrong for this - I thought he was R/G Monsters, turns out he was R/G Devotion so I left the Drown in Sorrow out - would've helped me a lot).
R3 I go up against Esper Humans/Midrange (the Mihara build) - they were saying that this was a bad matchup for the deck, but I don't get it. Both games I was comfortable with my board position the whole time - maybe I need to play against someone who can pilot it better? Don't know, but so far I still don't know if this matchup is really in our favor or in theirs.
R4 I'm in a mirror match (well, so much for Doom Blade) and promptly lose G1. I steamroll him with Erebos G2, and manage pull ahead in the Pack Rat race (despite him playing first) G3 to win.
R5 I go up against Esper, and ALMOST managed to nick G1 had he not drawn an Aetherling. G2 I won on the back of timely hand disruption, and I pull back to win G3 after BOTH my Erebos were taken care of (D-Sphere and Revoke Existence). Mutavault won me this game, you amazing card, you.
R/G Devotion again for R6, and this time I manage to board correctly. I win in 3 very close matches, with Drown proving pivotal in the final game.

what you guys think about the Mono black list from scg open alanta
i like life bane alot
It seems like it would have a rougher time vs faster aggro and/or mirror.
Depends on which 'fast aggro' you're referring to, but Lifebane can be a 2-for-1 vs most aggro decks. I've been considering cutting one Specter and one Demon for 2 Lifebanes, because the meta has a lot of G and/or W right now. Cutting all Specters for Lifebanes is a very daring move, though. It says, 'I really don't expect to face Black' because Specter is clearly the better card there, due to the card advantage.
I'm also surprised by Fonseca's 2/2/2 removal split between Bile Blight, Devour Flesh, and Ultimate Price. Another nod to G/R in the meta.
Another VERY important question: given the tournament results, would you run the same 75? Esper Control took THREE of the top 10 spots. That's a huge comeback for a deck that had been written off, and it's a sign that the meta is shifting away from aggro and into more midrange & control archetypes.
This is the list I've been running lately. (Mono B is not very popular around here so I'm fine running 4 Doom Blade 1 Dark Betrayal in my 75) All the creature deck matchups feel pretty easy, G/R monsters is the hardest but I think post board the matchup is slightly in my favor. U/W is still tough because game 1 is miserable. Post-board the matchup feels pretty even, so you you have to draw pretty well 2 games in a row. I started with 1 Negate in the board and it won me the game when I cast it,(opponent at 2 life tapped out for a Revelation) so I'm trying 2. Splashing 2 cards off 4 sources is kinda sketchy but I don't want to tip off my opponents to a blue splash so I'm not adding Watery Graves(Plus the games go long so theres a good chance I'll have drawn a temple). I went up to a 5th Temple and I'll probably try adding a 6th because the scrying has been so nice.
Board plan against most creature decks:
-4 Underworld Connections, +4 Removal/Erebos (Against decks with a lot of 1 drops, take out Thoughtseizes for more removal)
Against U/Wx control:
-8 creature removal (leave in 2 Downfalls), + Duress, Erebos, Negate
I'm glad we are talking about this! I just signed up for GP Cincinnati and have been running mono black for a good 3 months now. I like both of these decks but dropping nightveil altogether seems a little rough. Granted I have 4x life banes coming out of the board to help fight the G/R matchup. If you were leaving tomorrow what deck would you bring to the GP?
Another thing, did Nam have 2 watery graves in the main to help with his 1x notion thief? What do we think of a 2x temple of deceit, 2x temple of silence split?

I feel very strongly that leaving the Nightveils at home is a bad move. Not only are they good vs control and the mirror, they eat 2/2 aggro creatures and Satyr tokens, and they fly in to punch planeswalkers. Against control, we want as many threats (especially the card-advantage kind) as possible. Owen Turtenwald's only answers to Elspeth and Jace were Thoughtseize and evasive creatures, and that makes perfect sense. Why hold a card in hand just for Elspeth, when a good opponent will just Thoughtseize or counter it?
Notion Thief is an interesting play, but it's probably only going to work once, so you'll side it back out game 3 and watch every Sphinx's be 2-3 less than it could be. If you want to run the Thief, run 4 Temple of Deceit. Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with a 2/2 split; I'm probably going back to that after shifting from 4/0 to 2/2 to 0/4.

Notion thief is too "cute". I tried it out in my MBD build (I already run blue for ashiok). I ended up taking it out.
With regards to specter: do you think its ok to remove specters for lifebane zombies? A few decks are making this trend... and I need more opinions on it.
I apprecaite the insight charlie you make a very good case for the specters. And with that in mind I'm leaving the specters in. I am however going to increase the lifebanes from 3 to 4 in the board. He is very vaulable a lot of matches, especially thr r/g monsters matchup.
