I was watching some guy play the Brilliant Ultimatum deck, and his opponent was giving him piles like 'Jace and Brilliant Ultimatum' while he has Jace on the field. So he would play the Jace to kill his own Jace and then play the second Brilliant Ultimatum. He then played a Time Warp and a Liliana [he had another Liliana out, too].
I started laughing. Real hard. ... He didn't figure it out until the end of the match, even with my laughing. He did win the match[somehow] 2-1 though.

I have had 2-3 people scoop to me when there life goes negative when i have an Abyssal Persecutor on the field... 1 of those times i didn't have removal haha and wouldn't have draw it for 3 turns..
So playing my R/G Eldrazi Spawn Deck Vs Mono Black Vamps. I just staggerchocked both of his Hexmages and all he was drawing was Land and Removal.
Turn 8. I am at 4 Life, my opponent is at 39 life. All I have on the board is 2 Eldrazi Spawn creatures. He uses his Consuming vapors on one of the spawn, gaining no life. Passes the turn. I just throw down an Eldrazi Temple on my turn (At the moment I have 2 Eldrazi temples on the field 3 mountain 3 Forest)
Turn 9: He uses his rebound Consuming Vapors on the Other Spawn. Gains no life, Then signs in blood himself. On my turn I throw down another temple (thats 3 temples). I tap the three temples, and 2 mountain, 2 Forest, Hard Cast Kozilek. Draw 4 cards with a Forest and mountain cast ulamog.
My opponent just looks at me, and shakes his head. Then tells me I wanted to make sure you did not get spawn out so you could not ramp up to Kozi. So I cast consuming vapors on your Eldrazi spawn.
Casting Consuming vapors to get rid of 0/1 Creatures, to me is the dumbest move ever. Especially since I just barely killed him two turns later when he was able to draw a Nocturnus and two black cards showing next two turns. That 10 life he could of gained with the Vapors would of really helped him.
I don`t quite understand what`s going on here...
First of all, that was 2 Staggershocks, right? Seeing as he could just sac his Hexmages in response to counter the spell (thus no rebound). Quess this might just be another bad play though, from him
Also, why doesn`t he gain life? Vapors makes you sacrifice a creature, you can`t sac it in response to another effect or something. Then you would have to sacrifice the second spawn instead.
If he simply forgot to gain life, and you knew this at the time, that`s cheating. Gaining life is mandatory, and you are both responsible of maintaining the correct game-state.
I've argued with people over the number of cards in a deck many times, and I feel that having a high number of "good cards" is better than having a small number of "really good" cards. I laugh at the people who argue that with a smaller deck you're more likely to draw what you need, because if you get in that situation you're gonna NOT end up drawing it many many more times than you would.
I am at 2 life, and enough boardpossition to kill him. he plays RDW and has no cards in hand.
I have also a dragonsclaw in play. I pass the turn, he looks at the top card of his deck, and shows me the staggershock. I look at my lifetotal, and congratulate him and shake his hand. After looking at my deck i see the dragonsclaw and facepalm myself with my left hand...
I stick a Manabarbs, having nothing but a Lavaclaw Reaches out. He has a Firewalker (tapped) and WoO. I topdeck a Deathmark. He's at 3. I'm at 5. I hastily tap and kill the WoO and activate my Lavaclaw Reaches. What life am I at? Shoot... I asked him if I could take that move back and he promptly said, "No." smiling broadly and shaking his head. I practically had nightmares about it lol. After the game I check two cards deep and see a Lightning Bolt!

uhh, hexmage doesn't counter a spell, it just removes counters from a card. like planeswalkers.

yeah, he can sac the spawn in response to the the upkeep rolling around. not so sure about his opp using the rebounded vapors.

USMC Enlistment Progress: Beat MEPS, just gotta finish school and I'm off to boot camp.
A spell with no legal targets is countered upon resolution. If your opponent Staggershocks your Hexmage and you sac it targetting their mountain or whatever, then the spell will be countered (and therefore not rebound)
His opponent sacrificing the spawn doesn't nullify the Consuming Vapors (unless it's the only creature on board, and if there are no creatures on board it will still rebound (unless there is no legal target player/countered first time etc).
its not countered, the staggershock fizzles. Big difference if you are casting a spell that cant be countered etc. Everything is basically right though.
Fizzling is just slang for being countered due to illegal target. A spell that "can't be countered" says they can't be countered by spells or abilities, so they can still be countered by game rules, so there's no difference.
So my friend has Jace 2 out and plays his +2 Kept giving me cards I didnt need. Then I realized I had a Marsh flats in my hand after 2 turns of this stuff. I figured Im going to shuffle my deck after he does this. Well guess what? Beggining of my upkeep I draw for turn, Play my marsh flats, Search for a land, and then shuffle my library, Then facepalmed at my stupidity. Epic Fail? Yes indeed.
My worst plays in Type 2 have generally been forgetting that I have counters in my hand and letting things resolve.
I was playing a R/G ramp deck once, and had no idea what was in his deck. I attacked with my Sphinx of Jwar Isle, and he tapped out to cast Bogardan Hellkite. I was so surprised to see it that I forgot I had Flashfreeze in my hand, took 5 to the face, and had my Sphinx traded away for it. Postcombat I looked at my hand and facepalmed.
Another time I specifically left mana open for Flashfreeze, then somehow forgot that I had it to counter my RDW opponent's Ball Lightning. I lost the game off the back of that 6 damage, because I had 2 Baneslayers in hand ready to come down. ><
Playing Grixis against U/W: I swing with a Sedraxis Specter on turn 4 and he accidentally flashes a Negate, then pulls out the Purge to deal with it. Second main phase, I play Jace. . . and he gets Negated. Not sure what I was expecting.
2.) Jund vs Jund. He had 3 Saproling tokens. So did I. "Pulse your saprolings!" "Yours die too." "..."
I actually have seen this play many times and typically it isn't the worst play in the world. I've done it myself. My opponent had six saprolings and I had three and I was at three life. I was in top deck mode and I pulsed a saproling to clear the board so I wouldn't die. I ended up winning because he kept top decking lands.
The worst play I've had against me was against RDW. He was on the draw.
Turn 1 - Lands each
Turn 2 - I play Black Knight, he plays Hellspark Elemental. "Crap, it has first strike doesn't it?"
Turn 3 - He plays Ball Lightning... "Crap, first strike."
Turn 4 - Second Black Knight for me, unearths a Hellspark and plays another one. "...oh, first strike"
Turn 5 - He plays two Goblin Guides and then smiles triumphantly and swings, thinking he's going to get through for damage. I block and get two lands out of the process. He then calls first strike the dumbest mechanic in Magic and scoops.
The dumbest play I've made, however, was when I first started playing and thought the spell you Cascaded into absolutely had to play. Of course, the Spikes at my local FNM wouldn't tell me this because they'd much rather win then help me out.

He kept the Hexmage in as blockers. I also had a Garruk on the field, which he lets me play Garruk's +1 a couple times, once to cast the Staggershock. I told him, even before using my plus +1 that he can sack his hex mages to get rid of Garruk, but he said he wanted it as a blocker (why he wanted it as a blocker when he has 39 life, and I do not attack unless I have a monument out I have no idea why.) He did finally Sac his hexmage before Garruk got to his ultimate with me only having two 0/1's out there.
My mistake is he did gain two life and then signed in blood himself to go back to 39. But if you are on 39 life, and your opponent is on 5 life, why would you use Consuming Vapors on Spawn, when you think your opponent is going to use them to ramp up. He knows I was close to enough lands to hard cast a titan, and he knows that if I am going to use the spawn to ramp, I am going to sac them anyways hence when I do play a titan, all he has to do is play Consuming vapors making sure I have no other creatures on the field and I will have to sack ulamog.

Actually, assuming it is your turn (which it would almost always be if you cast Garruk) you would have priority. If you choose to use Garruk's sorcery-speed ability (any), the ability is on the stack. The opponent can respond by saccing the Hexmage then, which would kill Garruk upon resolution, but the Garruk ability would still resolve afterward.
If, however, you cast Garruk and then did anything else that went on the stack, your opponent could respond with the Hexmage, and you wouldn't be able to use Garruk before he died.

I told him that and he knew that, I am saying that he might want to sac his hexmage before I do it a second time, being I casted my stagger shock off of two mountains I was able to untap on the second time I got to use his plus one skill. First time I did it, I only untapped for lands to add to Garruk's loyalty count.

Can't he respond to it entering the battlefield? I'm no expert on the rules, but that's what I always thought. I'm going to go learn about priority now. I've heard that it's a good thing to understand, so I might as well do it.

Whenever a spell or ability finishes resolving, priority goes to the active player. In the case of Garruk (or any planeswalker), then, you cast him, he resolves, and then you get priority again and can use it to activate an ability. If there were some enters-the-battlefield trigger then the opponent would have an opportunity (stack's not empty so you can't activate any of Garruk's abilities, and the opponent will get priority before the ETB trigger resolves), but that's about the only way to get in there in time.
Anyway, on the topic of the thread my own worst play was at Nationals qualifier a few weeks back. Playing Boros Bushwhacker against Open the Vaults, I cracked an Arid Mesa and went for a Plains -- I think because I had a Steppe Lynx in hand I'd wanted to cast. As I was putting the land in play I realized if I'd gone for a Mountain instead I'd have had triple red for Bushwhacker/Summons and had him dead to rights. This is why it's a good idea to get enough sleep the night before an important tournament -- otherwise your brain isn't working as well as it ought to
So playing my R/G Eldrazi Spawn Deck Vs Mono Black Vamps. I just staggerchocked both of his Hexmages and all he was drawing was Land and Removal.

While it hardly matters, I`m just curious
Did he, or did he not, gain life? If not, why?
And were you at 4 or 5 life? I just find it funny (in both senses of the word) that your story changes.
And lastly, were there 2 Staggershocks involved? You never explained that in your response.
To add some actual content to the thread, I played some bad Standard Singleton not long ago. It partly blame it on eating while MODOing, but that`s really my own fault
My UW against Grixis, game 2. Turn 4, I run Jace TMS out there, after having dealt with his Jace Beleren. Having the choise of +2ing, or Brainstorming, I elected to do the latter. There were 2 cards left in his library that could deal (not awkwardly) with a 5-loyalty Jace, and I wasn`t even sure if he played Hexmage. It`s like begging to get Blightninged, or simply lose the most inportant card in the MU to Bolt/Burst Lightning.
His turn 10 I get my Sphinx of Magosi destroyed by Consuming Vapors. My turn 10 I play Baneslayer onto an empty board.
I had an Ajani and 2x Jace in hand, my opponent played a jace 1.0 and drew a card....then I killed it with one of my Jaces.
I literally have no idea what I was thinking.
I don't see why that is a bad play. I would make that exact play, and I play Super friends. Moving your ajani to 1 is much worse thn using up an EXTRA jace!
With that said, I Fate-sealed a jund deck using jace, had spreading seas on both of his red sources late game, and put blightning on the bottom of his deck.... twice in a row! A winnar is me!
Turns out that the reason that he hadn't swung was because he had the full playset of rites in hand along with fetch. He wanted 21 avengers & all their tokens before he dropped the fetch, cracked it & swung.
I do love when people are involved with their own game within the game. Admittedly, I play a lot of stupid decks that are like that.
Not THAT stupid, maybe, but still a great and fun missplay happened to my opponent today:
During a very drawn out game, me playing UW-tapout and my opponent playing MonoW Emeria. We both had loads of lands, I had some Everflowing Chalices, he had an active Emeria and noone having any threats. I got a useless Jace, Mind Sculptor because he needle'd it. He is holding a card I think is a removal. I cast Emrakul, take the extra turn and swing with it. He sacrifices a unused Expedition Map, 4 Plains, thinks a bit...and then promptly threw away his Needle in order to keep an active Emeria. I happily bounce my Emrakul with Jace, replayed him and swung for lethal the next turn. He just stared at me unbelievingly, then said "cool" and showed his Day of Judgment.

Lightning Bolts don't kill creatures. State-based actions kill creatures.
Yeh, won that game, as Jace TMS kicks butt
Yeah it killed the baneslayer but he was gloating how he still won because of JTMS
I do love when people are involved with their own game within the game. Admittedly, I play a lot of stupid decks that are like that.
WUBRGPauper Battle BoxWUBRG ... and why I am not a fan of Wayne Reynolds' Illustrations.
