My current Vampire Discard started out like this and frankly I thought it was a good build. Unfortunately your deck and mine at the time doesn't really have enough umph to win consistently.
If you are planning on playing any competitive you will need more creatures. I would start out with more Hypnotic Spectors and add Vampire Lacerators so you can trigger the Bloodchief Ascension on turn two.
Hey that's an awesome idea to activate the bloodchief with a lacerator, thanks!
It'll help with chump blockers as well. Maybe there's some form of beefy creature in rakdos that I could add for blocking? If you can suggest anything it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to break standard as well so if you know of any good extended cards that's cool
how can the lacerator trigger the ability of ascension, it says if an opponent loses 2 or more life this turn.. are we considered also as an opponent? even the controller of the ascension?
I would say throw in the discard rats that were released in alara. that way you have more of a creature presence. Because with just 6 creatures they won't stay on the board, unless you are doing some serious discard damage.

He meant we can have a counter on the Ascension at the end of our 2nd turn. I wont be activated yet just trigger the put a counter on the ascension.
Thats what I use it for, and if you playing against a somewhat slow deck your usually get two counters on it before your opponent gets anything to deal with the Lacerator and by that time you can get the third counter with lightning bolt or blightning.
Now looking at your other cards, while I see the point in the Howling Mine and Underworld dreams being in your deck, howling mine gives your opponent card advantage since you can't take advantage of it the turn you play it and you can't make them discard since most of you discard spells are sorceries. Maybe switch it with Mind Sludge or something similar.

i would suggest -1 mindshatter and +1 blightning as blightning also helps get the accention online and you really want as much of it as your deck allows (4) and does mindshatter actually do that much? it is quite expensive, you need to pay 5 mana just to make your opponent discard more than blightning would and by then your specters and other creatures would have hopefully knocked your opponent down to 2 cards max
I was listing a deck for a wbr control deck and half way through it turned into a discard frenzy deck. It looks pretty well with the mana curve. The only problem is the mana base. It's strength comes the creatures that take advantage of the fewer cards in hand.
With the highest cmc of 4 you should be able to get a decent hand every draw (I hope). Best case scenario, turn 1 duress, turn 2 tidehollow, turn 3 blightning, turn 4 thought hemorrhage (you should be able to no what they r playing by now), and then drop either Nyxathid or Guul Draz. Comment and speculations.
Edit: I accidentally started a new thread trying to reply to this (im a forum newbie lol)
I actually run a deck similar to this except I usually find that it is a little slow and if you're facing a faster deck or a control deck, you're pretty well screwed. (against uwr control, all your removal is made basically useless in the first match - kinda dumb)
Nyxathid becomes pretty insane as a 1BB for 5/5, 6/6, 7/7 depending on how the discard is going. Halo Hunter isn't TOO BAD of a beater if you're going for budget (6/3 intimidate against a deck with no black = :D)
god, you know, I comtemplated getting some Hellspark Elemntals, but decided not to. After I toy around with my current deck, I may look into breaking it down into mono red and mono black. Thx for the advice.
I know it can use some work if anyone has any input. I could really use advice on lands.
Please bear with me, as I just got back into the game. Havent played since the Time Spiral Block
4 Lightning Bolt, trust me, you'll want them.
Terminate and Doom Blade both get stuffed by pro black, I'd stick with one and sideboard something else in.. that's just me and knowing my meta though Nyxathid is godlike at times! They drop something to burn it, but once they drop that card it gets stronger on the stack.. it's just an evil card really.
I've changed my deck entirely and I'll update my post later with the upgraded deck. I've found running Vampire Nighthawks really helps in a discard concentrated deck.
The new deck I've constructed uses a few cards breaking the standard boundary though, such as The Rack, so I'm not sure if I should update my post or make a new thread elsewhere
And for lands, just use akoum refuge as it's been mentioned. Dragonskull summit is totally outside of my budget range, haha.

does damage dealt to to the controller of the ascension will be considered to have it counters?
