My memory is a little hazy after 15 hours of playing fae plus the 6 hour car ride back to SoCal, but I'm fairly certain this was the way things played out. I'm pretty sure the State Champ's name was Roger Fondren. He and I were the only players to go undefeated in the swiss rounds.
As for the player turnout, CA states was packed! We had 273 people signed up in the tournament when the judges only expected 180. Halfway through the event, the San Jose fire marshal showed up because it was so crowded. Luckily, he let us continue the tourney, but according to the judges all Mono-R Burn decks had to leave.
Sorry, I don't. But from various accounts given by friends, his deck seemed to differ a bit from normal merfolk lists. I heard reports that it ran reveillarks md, as well as merfolk looters(!?). Also, they didn't see him play either sower of temptation, knight of meadowgrain, or sygg, river guide in any of the games they watched, so I wouldnt be surprised if he didn't run some or any of these. None of this is certain, btw, just second-hand observation and speculation on my part.
I was at Ohio States. I went 2-5-drop with a W/R/g control pile after mulling to 6 all but 2 games the entire day, and getting mana flooded every other game. It was like the stars aligned against me, plus I lost a match for being nice (my opponent hadn't showed after 15 minutes because his last opponent had accidentally taken his Oblivion Ring and he had to find a replacement and I told the judge I'd wait).
Anti Control Kitchkin (played by me) defeats U/B Fairies
B/R aggro (featuring Wort, which was a beating all
day) defeats U/W/B Lark.
5CC defeats U/B Fairies
Profane Elves defeats B/W/R White Weenie (bitterblossoms main)
Semis

Long story short- I went undefeated in swiss, 6-0 and drew the last two rounds. I played 4 Rangers of Eos main and crushed the wrath strategies. I played against 3 red decks in swiss and the tutoring Ranger for two forge tenders was amazing. I defeated fairies twice, red three times, 5cc twice and planeswalker control once. I think I just played the right deck for the meta. The finals my deck just stopped working. I parised to 6 both games on the play and just came up with nothing. I made a few questionable plays but I still feel the were necessary if I was going to win the match and not just stall. It was the first large tournament I have played in some time.
Finals:
Naya Planeswalker control defeats B/G Elves
B/G Elves actually played against (and beat) my friend Brice in the quarters, who was playing GBR Mana Ramp. Was painful to watch, he should have won against Elves but 9 hours of playing is hard on a guy!
I went 5-3 with UBW Lark, losing to Kithkin, Merfolk and RDW and beating B/W Lifelink (Twice), Reanimator, Doran Rock, and Jund Tokens.
Ended up 41st out of almost 200. Wasn't bad, but was hoping to do better than my 11th last year. =/
Oh well, was a fun and exhausting day.

hey, you remember what that W/R lark deck looks like?
I was at Ohio states and some have already explained how hectic it was due to the massive unexpected turnout so I won't rehash. I played RDW to a 3-3 record and then dropped figuring 3 losses wasn't good enough for a prize with 275+ people. My matches went as follows:
Overall, I had a great time and all of the guys I played were great people. No sore losers or anyone taking things too seriously. My loss in the 3rd rd was a beating as he played turn 1 forge tender, turn 4 ranger of eos (fetching FoD and forge tender), turn 5 ajani both games. In Rd 5, I got him down to 4 life game 3 with 3 stigma lashers and then he top decks 2 runed halos calling lasher then javelin. I topdecked a few demigods but they got condemned. We went to time and he won on the last turn due to my inability to draw enough threats to save them up. I got stomped in the mirror rd 6 by double demigod both games.
The meta was weird. I didn't expect to see so much RDW but it was all over the place. 5cc and Kithkin/ww were also popular. I didn't see a lot of Fae but the decks I did see did well. There were a lot of people playing bad 5cc builds and I probably saw at least 15 realm razer decks and I don't think any of them did that well since they were all around the middle tables. Not too much innovation, which was disappointing.
I believe the Top 8 in South Dakota ended up being:
Elfball
RDW
RDW
Faeries
Faeries
BW Divinity Aggro Control
Faeries
in no particular order
That's the third Top 8 States list that I've seen Elf Ball appear in, and one even took top spot (NC I believe someone said). I really want to see these lists. Do you have any idea what the SD one was by chance PhyreMynd?

In Idaho, I didn't stay for T-8, but I believe we had 3 faeries, one 5CC, one Kith, one Vengeant R/W. I don't know the rest.
I finished 18th with 5CC. Punted my last match against RDW by not taking care of Stigma Lasher. I couldn't stop the first hit, but I should have still taken it out. It ended up doing 10 to me while I did other things.
me and my team mate made top eight with almost perfect records, my other teamate got screwed because the judge put in the results wrong so we would have had 3 q'n'toast builds of ours in top 8.
Wyoming results:
top eight were
5-8 q'n'toast (me)
5-8 mono black conrtol(got a game loss first round and lost fast)
5-8 the merfolk wizards deck
5-8 reamrazer/bloomtender control
3-4RDW
3-4 Backlash
2 q'n'toast (team mate)
1 fae(he won last year, Meng long)
we had decks that had favorable matchups in all games, the Sb was great and we would have won if he didnt draw lands >,<;;
PM if you want decklist
Hey, I'm very curious as to what the MBC deck ran. Do you happen to remember seeing specific cards like Divinity of Pride or Dusk Urchins? I know I should just wait for the list to come out, but I'm just curious if you know anything about this deck.
vermont states top 8 had 1 u/b fae, 2 5cc, 1 g/w little kid, 1 bant ramp/control, 1 ? (i think it might've been g/b elves), 1 naya aggro featuring thoctar, ranger of eos, naya charm and spark elemental, 1 wackey naya deck called 20 knights with 20 knights, 20 spells and 20 lands that somehow went undefeated till the top 8. Top 8 matchups went:
5cc over ?
naya aggro over fae
bant ramp over g/w little kid
20 knights over 5cc
5cc over bant ramp
naya aggro over 20 knights
naya aggro over 5cc
There were 43 people at the tournament, it was a good time. I played u/b fae to 4-2, played 3 mirrors, 1 kithkin, 1 b/g elves and 1 mono black. Lost the mirror twice. There were alot of fae, elves and 5cc. RDW and kithkin were present, but not in too much force. It was fun to watch the rogue decks at the top tables. 20 knights had one ridiculous play against 5cc - discarded 2 wilt-leaf lieges to cruel ultimatum then swung and double flame javelined for the 16 point life swing and the win. He sided out ultimatums for game 2 :).

Yeah, that was against me in Round 1, Game 2 of Swiss. LOL - I was very surprised. I really should have ultimatum-ed on first main phase rather than swinging with my finks and doing it second main phase. If I did it that way I would have had a chance with the finks as the blocker.. but he had like 4 cards in hand and no board.. I thought the Ultimatum would burry him. Who would ever expect a 20 damage turn! I give that guy mad props for that play.
I sided the ultimatums out for Game 2 of Top 8 (where I had to play him again)- He was my only loss all day (twice).
But thats what magic is about epic games and insane plays! I had a blast.
Kurtis in top 8 was running mono-white Kithkin, actually. Not sure if Eric was or not, I never watched him play.
I hate that you beat me in tie breakers, I was 5-2 too.
I played Eric. I know what he was running, Ajani Vengeant main. Kurtis was the guy in the green/white stripped hoodie right? I thought I saw a battlefield forge on his board, maybe I was mistaken. Either way I'm glad he made top 4, but he made bad play mistakes in his quarterfinal match (not as bad as mine though!).
Actually - thinking about it, i'm fairly sure he was mono white as he ran unmake (playing it on demigod AFTER taking 5 being one of his mistakes).
I made top 4 at NJ States with Red White Kithkin, losing twice to the same red white deck that made top 2. I went 7-2 overall beating faeries 3 times( 1 was Esper) in close matches. Along with beating 2 bant aggro control(1 in top 8), mono red and jund tokens. There were 122 people there with 5-8 getting 9 packs and 3-4 getting 18 packs
I played RDW at ohio states. I went 6-3. I lost to a weird bant toast with lots of Condemn and Bant Charm, Lark because I couldn't handle the 3 4/3 flyers, and I lost to Faeries in the last round for an unknown reason. This put me in 33rd, which was one spot away from getting prize.
I came in 32nd in Ohio with Kithkin. I lost once to the Planeswalker deck that made top 8, once to some G/B deck, and once to Reveillark. The only deck I played twice was RDW, which was good for me.
OK, I ended up winning British Columbia champs with u/b Faeries finishing 8-1-1 on the day through top 8
Top eight was
Faeries(Me) vs 5c Cruel Control 2-1 for me
Faeries vs Bant aggro Faeries faeries wins
5c elementals vs white wheenie elementals wins
rdw vs white wheenie , wheenie takes it
Then faeries mirror i win 2-1
And elementals goes to the finals,
and then i take elementals down 2-0
field was 100 players, and looked like there was alot of kithkin around,
What did the elementals run?
