I'm not gonna beat around it. I'm excited for the possibility on Mono-Color decks possibly returning to standard. Mono-Green looks strong but in the last three or so days I've been all about the Black.
This was is my first base of a decklist. The last two slots are kind of debatable for me right now. If Cabal Stronghold ends up being good or very good and I want more mana sinks I could see Walking Ballista or Torment of Hailfire filling one or two of the slots. Planeswalkers like Liliana, Death's Majesty or the new Karn, Scion of Urza could try to round out to top end as well.
With Dominaria, the hope for Mono-black seems like a distinct possibility in Standard. Do you think there's any chance Rite of Belzenok or Torgaar, Famine Incarnate could make it in here, especially after rotation? Potentially, if a Torgaar build starts floating around, Vicious Offering and Yawgmoth's Vile Offering suddenly become playable. Maybe Divest ? I'll definitely be with you on the brewing front when Dom comes out!

I've been testing Torgaar, Famine Incarnate in a Saproling build and in Monoblack, and so far he seems amazing in both. With Rite of Belzenlok, you can actually use the clerics to sac for Torgaar, as well. He's fun, and he's great to knock people down. A few times, I've used him to bring myself back up to ten against Monored and it has actually saved me.

Seems sweet. Do you have a list? Torgaar intrigues me and I'd like to see him get some play. Definitely has potential. Are you running Bad Coffers?
The singleton Fungal Infection is there because early game against some decks it's a 2-for-1, and on occasion I've used the token's death to trigger Revolt for Fatal Push, as well.
Seems really good. I'm not a huge standard player, but I feel as though Wilds is probably not worth it because it comes into play tapped. Fungal Infection seems really good in theory for Torgaar, Famine Incarnate, being able to sometimes 2 for 1 the opponent or at least make a token to sac for Incarnate. I would either go up on Pushes or go up on Infections.
Do you feel you draw Torgaar enough? I get that the legendary clause really restricts going up a copy, but maybe a couple Mastermind's Acquisitions would be good. The wish effect could also be really good for Lost Legacy and maybe Scavenger Grounds as well. Either way, it's a versatile tutor that can fetch you removal, Torgaar, and any of your other finishers. Torment of Hailfire also seems really solid out of the sideboard with Acquisition.
Also, is the lack of card draw (outside of Dark Bargain) hurting you? Maybe Arguel's Blood Fast could make its way in there?

It started off more midrange, but slowly leaned into a little more low-to-the-ground w/midrange flavor. (not even sure if that makes sense) I had Acquisition in the deck originally, but often times this deck doesn't want to be spending its turns doing nothing. Fungal would be really good if I knew I was always playing aggro decks, but against control its next to useless. Torgaar can be played as a 3-of if you want, but after testing I often found that I really only want to see a single copy a game. I would say you could try Arguel's Blood Fast in the board against control, but against Monored, you definitely don't want it. It's not that it isn't useful against them, it's just kind of a waste of a turn against them. I do agree that Wilds making the land come into played tapped hurts too much, and will most likely remove them, but I hate getting glutted on lands late game. Still working out a resolution to that.
Quick note also: Instead of another copy of Push or Infection, I'd rather work in another copy of Cast Down, because Steel Leaf Champion is real.
You could also try Vicious Offering against Champion, because it also hits those nasty Hazorets and Scarabs that Cast Down can't. Overall, though, I think this might be my favorite reincarnation of Mono-black yet. I'm still waiting to see if MBC can pull through.

That's true about Vicious Offering, we just need to make sure we can answer turn two Steel Leaf Champion if we weren't able to kill their turn one Llanowar Elves. Granted the two times I couldn't kill the Elves turn one, I had mulliganned into a 0 removal hand. And without a turn one creature we can't kill Champion turn two with Offering. It's definitely worth testing out more though.

Josu Vess, Lich Knight and Bad Coffers (which I think is still potentially very good) were tempting to start but today we go to see Dread Shade and I was all in.
The Dominaria cards are just the newest enablers but honestly Black has had a lot of power this past standard too. The best removals in Fatal Push and Vraska's Contempt, some powerful sideboard hate in Lost Legacy, Bontu's Last Reckoning, and Yahenni's Expertise. Through in cards like Glint-Sleeve Siphoner, Gifted Aetherborn, and Ravenous Chupacabra and you can see why I'm excited.
4 Dusk Legion Zealot
3 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
4 Dread Shade
3 Ammit Eternal
4 Ravenous Chupacabra
2 Josu Vess, Lich Knight
1 Never // Return
3 Doomfall
2 Vraska's Contempt
21 Swamp
3 Cabal Stronghold
If Stronghold ends up being bad than the mana base can be revised with some Ifnir Deadlands, a Field of Ruin or two, a Scavenger Grounds and maybe some number of Desert of the Glorified. Right now I'm going to assume the Stonghold is good until testing proves it isn't.
Other possible deck inclusions as I see it could be:
- Fathom Fleet Captain
- Kitesail Freebooter
- Cast Down
- Gonti, Lord of Luxury
- Liliana's Mastery
- Twilight Prophet
- Walk the Plank
- Bontu's Monument
- Sadistic Skymarcher
- Yahenni, Undying Partisan
I'm excited to see if anybody else is brewing Mono-Black with me.CUBE: http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/73964;jsessionid=2DE1F5FF41A24820A137448A2FD5CF8F
