The card represents four damage, and a counterspell to creature removal as well as board wipes. That is it.
The third ability is the thing I think people do not think about, the double strike isn't very useful on this card. While doublestrike at instant speed is good, you have to consider how much extra damage you are getting with the card, because if it is less than five extra damage than you could just cast it directly at the opponent instead. On hit effects however do change the usefulness of the card.
As it is printed, it is slightly more efficient in doing damage to an opponent than current burn spells, but it does not have the capability to target a creature, and in order to abuse the double strike ability you need a creature with lifegain or some kind of on hit effect, or a creature with at least five power, all of which are fairly narrow when you have it in the hand.
The card represents anti removal right up until the end of the game, and at that point it represents reach, four life that your opponent doesn't know he doesn't have.
I am not sure why I wrote this post, I guess I keep on giving the card too much credit. I know the uses for this card and I suppose I felt like if I can make that mistake, I might as well share my thoughts on it.

The red mage lives by the variance and dies by the variance. May the variance be with you, always.
I have used the double strike mostly to trade for bigger creatures they blocked with, or vice versa. Experienced players wont fall for it, but the stupid looks i have gotten are priceless.
Swing for 4.
"Block with the 6/6?"
Boros charm, double strike.
"Oh, duh."
Worst mode of the card IMO, and that speaks to its strengths I think more than its weaknesses.
Not sure I follow at all. Yeah double strike is least used mode but they doesn't take away from how great the other 2 are. You can kill a blocker you wouldn't have with the double strike mode. You also can do more than 4 damage to the face with that mode with something as simple as madcap skills.
Currently the only decks it sees play in are RDW splashing white for extra reach and RW aggro decks who want a way to prevent Supreme Verdict from blowing them out while still providing them with game ending reach. The card is good in the decks that want it.
The double strike mode also has fringe use as a removal spell in combat (i.e. to kill a creature of equal size rather than as a two-for-one for your opponent). It's not amazing, but a combat-specific Doom Blade for RW has got its uses from time to time.
Overall the card suffers for just not being that necessary. Red doesn't want lava spike and is already good against wrath decks game 1. It's nice to have the option in the sideboard but not strictly necessary

Oh phooey. This is a great card. Don't be silly. People play it, it's useful, it makes the mans do the damage and kills the evil enemy sorcerer.
This is the dumbest thread I've seen on these forums.
Next up: Why Putrefy sucks. It ONLY does what the text on the card says. What a pile of crud.
And stay tuned for: Why doom blade sucks. Uguyyyysss! It doesn't even kill black creatures. That's RACIST!
Oh and Elspeth is just so crappy. I don't even PLAY white. Why would I want a white planeswalker? Helllooooo! Wizards of the Coast! Did someone drop you on your card designer heads as children? I don't play white. So your white cards are useless to my decks. Sheesh.
I have seen this card get used so much in standard its crazy. Honestly i think its a great card with great abilities, and by far the best charm that is offered in standard in my opinon.
It can also be used as a pseudo fog effect against attacks by blocking with the team and after blocks are declared use the charm. Its probably a very rare occurence, but a player may swing with 3 or 4 Pack Rats, you "fog" it with the Charm, then untap and crack back. Obviously not the best line of play as it can just blow up in your face, but no one goes back to ask how you won every round.
Boros Charm is as good as people think it is, and it is playable in Modern. Most cards are not playable outside of standard, so anytime a new card sees play in Modern, Legacy or Vintage its nice to see.
The double strike mode could be changed to "discard your hand, you lose the game and cry" and it would still be a good card. 4 to the dome and sweeper resilience are 2 great things, especially in an aggressive color combo. I don't really know of anyone who gives great weight to the double strike ability when evaluating this card.
I run three of these charms in my new Naya beatdown deck and it's a good draw. If I have a Ghor-clan Rampager on the field I can push for 8 trampling damage, or more rarely, a monstrous Polis Crusher to attack for 14. Removal resilience is also nice, and if I need to push a bit more damage to finish off the opponent, 4 damage can get me there.
So it's a great card in the right deck. Doesn't hurt to run Selesnya Charm alongside it, either!

yeah, its great with kal hydra too, this thread is hilarious, it is one of the more versatile cards out there- especially if you can think outside the box with it. Heck, it is even part of a three card infinite combo

It had some success in the 2nd place boros devotion deck of SCG today. Boros charm on Purphoros unblocked plus his 2R pump to end the game. There was 4 in the sb, mostly it's useful as a versatile burn/supreme verdict insurance. Though he brought it in against Gr monsters too, and Boros midrange.
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.
People used to try similar with Silverblade Paladin in the previous Standard, too, but it still wasn't that good.
Attempting to spend the 1RRRWW on that falls more into the realm of "cute trick" than "useful synergy" against most decks given how late it comes out and how fragile the whole thing is.

Yeah Ajani turn 3 and Sparky turn 4 would be much better.
So far, Boros Charm hasn't let me down. I've won with each of the 3 modes and so far, I haven't experienced being countered. The indestructible mode saved me from Supreme Verdict, dealt the last lethal 4 damage and dealt a final double strike using a Deathbellow Raider enchanted with Madcap Skills and buffed with Titan's Strength.

Um...boros charm remains one of the best charms in standard due to its sheer power, double-strike at instance speed is amazing, can knock out blockers as well as going for lethal, also +12 -12 with a spark trooper which is like 3 warleader's helix....(going a bit optimal I know)
4 to the face...c'mon 2 mana for 4 in the face...
indestructible...saves your biggies or good creatures and lets you do all sorts of nasty fun things with boros reckoner
how is the card not effective for an uncommon?
