Hi, im a big fan of Angels and with the recent release of AVR, i decided to go with my love and make a deck thats kinda not so good. Tested it a couple of times, felt that it could be better. I've seen quite a few variations at FNM with Thraben Valiant, Angelic wall, Mirran Crusader and the lot. I also thought of having a Gideon Jura inside.
Hi, i've been trying to do the something similar. Personally I feel your deck might be a little high on the mana curve.
I feel blade splicer, silverblade paladin, restoration angel all have great synergy with eachother as well as tons of potential for combat tricks with cloudshift. Riders of gavony allow us to grind out those wins instead of trying to curve out with hero of bladehold.
I was underwhelmed with the traditional 1 drops in human decks and prefer just mana dudes who can be boosted later on with gavony township and or mikaeus. And they allow us to more reliably cast the juicy 3 and 4 mana drops early on.
Thalia is just too good not to play in a deck with only 4 noncreatures.
Scroll of avacyn isnt that great imo since it doesnt affect the board at all and it feels like its there for the angel theme more than anything else. Maybe play it in the sideboard vs RDW if that turns out to be good but you'd probably rather play timely reinforcements instead.
I havent tested angel of jubilation in the main yet. She might be good but we allready have so many 4 drops and i prefer the others over her for now. And honor of the pure seems iffy when we play so many 3 and 4 drops instead. Maybe it protects some of our guys from slagstorm but im not sold on it yet.
This is what i have been testing. note that the sideboard is fairly random.
Will have to test angel of jubilation and angelic destiny more to see if they are worth including.
I did manage to pull a 6/6 Silverblade Paladin with Jubilation and HotP only to have it doombladed after that. But still kinda good, if you ask me. Scroll of Avacyn is just there to get me my health and a extra card. Brimstone me for 5? Nope. I did try Birds of Paradise and found myself drawing that bird in late game, so i just removed the bird. I did try it out with Green Sun Zenith. Works, but it can only be called a Miracle.
I also did try Timely Reinforcements. That 6 life and 3 tokenz are too good to pass. Sadly, i got Surgically Extracted the first time i used it. Extremely annoying.
Price for Thalia in my area has risen. So i dont think i will be getting her anytime soon.
Other than the protection, i dont really see a use for Riders of Gavony.
Which do you prefer? Mirran Crusader or Silverblade Paladin? Im just so afraid of THAT Doomblade.
I tried to keep the deck as affordable as possible. Cavern of souls is just too expensive.
And I just wondered, how does Fiend Hunter work with Cloudshift? I heard something about perma exile and sh*t.
My last game was pretty funny, for me that is.
Friend : Attack with Chandra's Phoenix. Take 2, your creatures are tapped. Game over.
Me : Really? Tap Plains, Cloudshift Angel of Jubilation, 6/6 bond with Silverblade Paladin(kinky), Double strike and I block.
Friend : ....
I have been testing the list i posted:
- 1 thalia
- 1 sigarda (to sideboard)
- 1 restoration angel
+ 3 angelic destiny
The destiny so far is pretty nice. It can make you a little more resilient to slagstorm and titans. They dont work too amazingly with thalia but i'm not sure wether you should run one over the other or if a mix is fine. You have the potential of playing the destiny on a bonded paladin on turn 3 or 4 and swinging for 12 which is pretty big.
I find that with Mikaeus, gavony township and the angelic destiny i get enough late game use out of Birds that i still like having them. I really suggest giving the townships a go because they can have a huge impact in the mid game.
The cloudshifts and restoration angels basically play as a counterspell versus any boardwipers they might have or dat doom blade. Maybe side in 2 x sigarda vs zombies, U/B control or esper control decks. If you can resolve the host of herons vs them with cloudshift backup vs day of judgement you have pretty much won.
Don't understimate the protection the riders give, just name whatever threat they played and keep on swinging. Meanwhile blocking them so you win the race. Proxy up a couple and give them a go and you will see what I mean.
Personally I think silverblade paladin is amazing and mirran crusader is only good vs some decks. They wont have a doomblade for all your threats and you can protect him with angels and cloudshifts. I'd maybe play mirran crustader in the sideboard. But there are so many great 3 mana critters in white that you have to make a choice.
Cavern is expensive but also really strong. The fact that it exists is allready enough to make people play less counter effects and you dont need to run it yourself.
As far as i know cloudshift on fiend hunter just lets you pick a new target (or the same one) since shifting fiend hunter makes the exiled creature come back in play and then when you fiend hunter returns to play you can pick that creature again if you want. I dont think it permanently exiles anything.
Dont quote me on that though since i have only recently come back to magic and the rules changed quite a bit in the meantime
Angelic Destiny in my area is now also pretty expensive. I'll give the townships , Riders and Mikeaus a go then. I guess no one bothers to reply is because its WG Angels/Humans?
Have you thought about elite inquisitor? He seems like a decent 2 drop that could be boosted by mikeaus and/or Gavony township. First strike + vigilance are good, and pro-zombies and pro-werewolves can be very relevant. Maybe in place of blade splicer (maybe)

I have those in my sideboard for those in-case moments. Thanks though.
I did change my deck a little. Its more sustainable now and winning more matches.

Fiend Hunter enters the battlefield.
Trigger is put on the stack.
While the trigger is still on the stack, Cloudshift your Fiend Hunter. Fiend Hunter comes back.
New trigger on the stack.
Since the "leaves the battefield" trigger from the first Fiend Hunter already resolved, one creature will get exiled forever but the second one will come back as normal when your Fiend Hunter dies.

Added Cavern of souls, Restoration Angel just kept getting leaked to save my creatures.
Would Increasing devotion be of any use?
