I tried this deck out at New Phyrexia Game day, managed to go 5-1. lost badly to a Kor Blade deck last round with terrible draws, but it managed to surprise everyone by getting 1st before the top 4. Any suggestions welcome, and I know the manabase could use some work. At least this deck'll still be mostly legal after ZEN rotates.

I'm diggin that you want proliferate. Ever consider clasp since it can be a good removal as well?
As a two-drop, Thrummingbird is less optimal, because if it is the first to hit the opponent, they are not poisoned. This puts it against the tempo you are looking for.
Contagion Clasp is slow for this deck; this looks to be more of an aggro-beatdown route than a proliferate-control deck. You already have enough creatures that proliferation will be rather moot for you.
Smother's cost and effect make it the weakest of the black removal spells. Either it is not as fast as Disfigure and Dismember, or it's more limited set next to Doom Blade and Go For The Throat. [card]Into the Roil[card] might be good here, as its versatility is strong in this deck.
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and Necropede need to be in here somewhere. Skithiryx is such a blowout, and Necropede works well as an aggro-infecter and is good at providing 2-for-1's, as this format is full of X/1's.

3. Rules exist for a reason. If by breaking or ignoring a rule you fulfill the purpose of said rule at least as well as if you had followed it, then said rule should be duly broken or ignored.
I'm going to try this at the next FNM and see if it gets better than 2nd place. I shouldn't do too badly, my only bad matchup as far as I can tell was KorBlade. Yay bannings!
