I like some of these low-CMC decks with Wizard's Lightning and/or The Flame of Keld. However, they seem to be lacking a top end. Is that just made up for by the FoK (or Sword-Point Diplomacy in DeadWing's list)?
Even in classic RDW I find that Chandra and Rekindling Phoenix are two of our best value cards and help us close out games that get slowed down early. I'm unsure if FoK can make up the difference. Is a fast game 1 good enough that they belong in the sideboard?
Hi guys,
I've started to playtest R/b aggro for GP providence in august. I know the meta will change with the PT in 2 weeks, but I still want to play standard in the meantime.
Here is my list :
4 aether hub
4 dragonskull summit
15 mountain
4 Bomat Courrier
4 Soul-scar mage
3 shock
3 Abrade
2 Kari Zev Skyship raider
3 Heart of Kiran
4 Scrapheap scrounger
2 Pia Nalaar
4 Goblin chainwhirler
3 Unlicensed disentegration
1 Chandra Torch of Defiance
4 Hazoret the fervant
I'm not playing any phoenix...
It's a little bit slow and pretty much all the removal in the format is exiling ... So I prefer a card like Heart of Kiran that will hit at least 1-2 hit before getting exiled ...
And when I board in the chandra and/or glorybringer, theres to many high drops
As for what to run after rotation: Verix Bladewing seems obvious
Maybe Skizzik, but another regular at the LGS pointed out Charging Monstrosaur is the same CMC as a kicked Skizzik with 2 more toughness.
A full playset of Fight with Fire in the 75 rather than 2 or 3?
I wanted to splash Black for Sovereign's Bite so I have a 5-8 Lightning Strike, plus against an Aggro deck lifegain can be crucial. Sword-Point Diplomacy can be a bit fringe, but in this deck is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" card, since the majority of the cards are burn spells.
if the meta's G/x Stompy then yes, the deck i think is great against them preboard.
if Doublecast works for you, then good. but if not maybe replace them with a couple more Flame of Keld for more consistency.

looks good. if you're worried about the speed of the deck, add more lands so that there's consistent land drops. when going more top heavy, pack in more removal as well. the slower the deck, the more you need to interact early to prevent you opponent from running you over.
guys, please use proper decklist format. see my post below as an example. that will greatly help other players who wish to respond to your queries.
went undefeated on the Constructed rounds of our local Nationals, but didn't win a single draft game (it was my first time to play draft) so i didn't make it to the top 8.
fought against R/x (Mono Red, U/R, R/B), Stompy and Grixis Bolas decks. as you may have noticed, there's not a single M19 card there. i didn't feel the need to. the secret is in the sideboard. i knew various flavors of Red aggro decks will be the meta, so i adjusted my sideboard accordingly. also, i put in 3 Fight with Fire which came handy vs Stompy. Chandra's Defeat is great vs R/x decks and Bolas decks, which enables the player to kill Bolas for one mana.
I wonder how Spit Flame would compare to Fight with Fire - 1 less damage, but instant speed and can be recurred. I figure Fight with Fire's kicker is rarely ever relevant.

4 v 5 means Lyra survives and it can only be recurred with dragon aid.
The kicker is more relevant than you think, especially against decks packing Settle

cONgratz on the results, I also think that fight with fire is a key card in many matchups, especially since it can take care of Lyra and the scarab god (for one turn at least) as well as the big green stompy elf.

yeah i love Fight with Fire. aside from being a reference to Jaya Ballard, it is a versatile removal spell.
went 3-1 this Standard Showdown. still same list without M19 cards. defeated 2 mono red aggro and 1 mono blue mill, lost to G/B Stompy because i was stuck on 2 lands the whole game and i needed to cast Fight with Fire against Steep Leaf Champ.
I wonder how Spit Flame would compare to Fight with Fire - 1 less damage, but instant speed and can be recurred. I figure Fight with Fire's kicker is rarely ever relevant.

Maybe my LGS's meta is weird.
FWF would indeed be better versus Lyra Dawnbringer or Settle the Wreckage but I haven't seen those.
Was thinking of Meteor Golem for annoying enchantments and perhaps creatures too big for usual removal
I rarely see other straight aggro except for green stompy.
Earthshaker Khenra never seems to do anything for me. Kari Zev is sometimes great, sometimes a dead card. Both are likely to get sideboarded out.
While not a decklist issue, I'm using M19 Shocks and Lightning Strikes since they have the current 'any target' wording - it reminds me they can hit planeswalkers and we wouldn't have to look it up if an opponent didn't know that. (Battlebond Shock is also updated)
Against which matchup do you side in Harsh mentor ?
And same question for Meteor Golem ? and how often were you able to cast it ?
I still believe that Fight With Fire is the "less worst" card against decks that boards in Lyra.
The ideal solution for me (and that's what I'm actually playing) is to splash black for unlicensed desintegration(and while playing black, add scrapheap scrounger and Duress)

I'd side in Harsh Mentor against a variety of decks where I see a focus on an artifact, creature or land with activated abilities - for example, I brought it in against Goblins because of Siege Gang Commander.
Fight With Fire is good at what it does.
I haven't played with Meteor Golem much yet, but I did side it in against mono-black because of Demon of Catastrophes and Demonlord Belzenlok. I didn't get up to 7 mana, used Soul Scar to make those fatties manageable.
Maybe I'll splash for enchantment removal.
Went 2-1
0-2 vs Knights. Game 1 T1 Soul-Scar, T2 2 Shock to opponent's face - was hoping to draw more land and play my bigger spells, but that didn't happen, so I would've been better served saving Shock for his creatures. Game 2 I almost finished him off but he stabilized with Arvad the Cursed.
2-0 vs mono black. Soul-Scar had Chainwhirler help.
2-0 vs mono red Goblins. One game I won mainly with 2 Rekindling Phoenix and a Glorybringer. The next game, all 4 Soul-Scars and a Hazoret. I was able to destroy his Metallic Mimics before they caused too much trouble. Sided out 2 each Kari Zev and Glorybringer (the latter being overkill against his weenies). Sided in 2 Harsh Mentor and 3 Chandra's Defeat. Figured the 61 card deck would work with the lower mana curve and it did.
3-0 on the 9th
I did get good draws and manageable matchups.
2-0 vs Knights. won the aggro vs. aggro race. spot removal before weenies got out of hand. Also 1-1 playing casually waiting for the next round, Aryel was killer the game I lost/
2-0 vs mono-blue artifacts (lots of cheap artifacts, things that reduce their cost or benefit from casting them). outraced him and used spot removal on enough pieces to slow him down and eliminate blockers. I sided out Glorybringer since it was overkill against anything but Sai, Master Thopterist.
2-1 vs G/r Stompy. Game 1 he got manascrewed. Game 2 I didn't sideboard since I hadn't seen what he had. The game just went his way. Game 3 he got out Ghalta, Primal Hunger but not in time. Soul Scar + exalted Glorybringer + Chainwhirler finished off Rhonas. I sided out a Chandra to bring in a 3rd Glorybringer, but ironically Chandra was key early game - killed something with her 3rd ability, found a lot of things to cast with her 1st ability, occupied his attackers. Sided out Abrade for Chandra's Defeat which was useful on Regisaur Alpha. Sided out Khenra and Kari Zev, both best against weenies, for FwF which was a big help.
Even when I sided in Meteor Golem, I didn't draw it or have enough mana to cast it, so that experiment is looking like a failure. I rarely find anything to do with Dire Fleet Daredevil either.
Was playing with this deck heavily up until Dominaria came out and took a break from the format. Interested in picking it up again but waiting until rotation. Has anyone been pondering post rotation brews? Selling off my Hazorets and picking up a playset of Goblin Chainwhirlers today.
my list is a slight variation of the US Nationals Top 8 Mono Red list.
i tweaked it (6 main cards) to have an edge in the red mirror and W control.
+2 Chandra (great w/Soul-Scar Mage)
+2 Rekindling Phoenix (not as good as Hazoret/Chandra but i wanted to diversify my finishers b/c of the 4 mana white enchantment that exiles a permanent, then Meddling Mages the copies in your hand)
+1 Kari Zev, Skyship Raider (wanted another 2-drop, cheap cc legends are ok imo)
+1 Mountain (w/2 more 4 drops, i wanted more consistent mana.)
-2 Hazoret the Fervent (see Phoenix explanation)
-2 Ahn-Crop Crasher (not impressed by exert. 3 mana investment that dies to a 1 mana shock = tempo loss.)
-2 Earthshaker Khenra (want to reduce Chainwhirler's effectiveness vs me.)
SB tweaks:
Magma Spray is for Scrapheap Scrounger ofc.
Sorcerous Spyglass is b/c i read today's GP Coverage regarding Turbo Fog and i don't own Insult/Injury. i think Spyglass may be better since it's more versatile in boarding in and you don't have to time it properly as your finisher... Spyglass can be used just for early prowess and i'd be happy w/it. just theory tho.
r1 vs W/B lifegain, 2-1.
SB +4 Abrade, -4 Lightning Strike
he had the 1 drop, gain life during upkeep artifact. which was annoying w/his W1 2/2, +1/+1 counter whenever you gain life.
r2 vs W/U GPG, 2-0.
SB +4 Abrade, -4 Lightning Strike.
in game 2, i played around Settle the Wreckage by only attacking w/1 dude when he has 4 mana open. he got impatient (low life) and tapped out most of his mana, his next main phase. that was my signal to alpha strike, then sac Courier for burn.
r3 vs mirror, 0-2.
SB +4 Abrade, +4 Chandra's Defeat. -4 Lightning Strike, -4 Shock.
game 1, i tried to shock him via Hazoret but he responded by saccing Courier (for 1) and he killed me w/a Lighting Strike off the Courier.
game 2, i mulled down to 4...
i still believe i have the superior build between us. i swept him on our 8/9 standard, both of us running basically the same decks.
i believe i'm running a solid version of Mono Red. but i'm still gonna tune my deck after tomorrow's GP coverage.
Was playing with this deck heavily up until Dominaria came out and took a break from the format. Interested in picking it up again but waiting until rotation. Has anyone been pondering post rotation brews? Selling off my Hazorets and picking up a playset of Goblin Chainwhirlers today.
we can talk about post rotation decks after Guilds of Ravnica has been fully spoiled.
so after selling your Hazorets for Chainwhirlers, are you going for a low to the ground mono red, perhaps one utilizing Flame of Keld?
i had mana issues tonight. couple games, i couldn't get to 3 to play most of my deck. i rarely got flooded. idk what trimming my land count from 23 to 22 did but man the mana gods were angry w/me tonight! lol
as far as what i could control, i think i inbred the deck too much vs other red decks. this week, there were only 2 red decks (one being me) compared to last week's 4. aethersphere harvester isn't too impressive when it isn't holding off phoenixes.
i swept my r3 opponent last week. i guess he brought a better game plan this week.
Hey there folks, I just started a Burn Discord channel and want to grow it as big as possible. I'm planning to involve all formats, even EDH if there is a good direct damage EDH deck haha! I know that Standard Mono-Red Aggro does have a good amount of burn spells in it and that most standard formats have a version Red heavy deck that is always at least competitive. I'm not as well versed in Standard Burn personally, but I feel I can at least hold a good conversation with Pauper, Legacy, and Modern. I hope y'all have a great rest of the week...thanks for the support!
test vs black aggro, 1-0.
he complained pre-match about not having enough answers to pro-black knights (besides his -2/-2 land.)
he kept a hand w/lots of removal but hardly any threats. eventually my threats overwhelmed him.
r1 vs G/r midrange, 1-2
SB +4 magma spray, -4 lightning strike (i want to kill his llanowar elves before he drops fatties.)
his deck seemed budgeted as he ran common rarity duals.
i won game 1. games 2 and 3, his sideboard shined (including that green fatty that gains you 5 life.)
drop.
in summary, my deck is outdated and time to be put out to pasture.
but is seems only to be good in Keld Red decks, where there's more direct burn.
Even in classic RDW I find that Chandra and Rekindling Phoenix are two of our best value cards and help us close out games that get slowed down early. I'm unsure if FoK can make up the difference. Is a fast game 1 good enough that they belong in the sideboard?

we can talk about post rotation decks after Guilds of Ravnica has been fully spoiled.
so after selling your Hazorets for Chainwhirlers, are you going for a low to the ground mono red, perhaps one utilizing Flame of Keld?

r2 vs Blue Artifacts (Storm), 2-0.
SB +4 abrade, -4 lightning strike.
r3 vs Esper, 0-2.
SB +4 abrade, +3 sorcerous spyglass (for Teferi.) -4 lightning strike, -3 aethersphere harvester.
i had mana issues tonight. couple games, i couldn't get to 3 to play most of my deck. i rarely got flooded. idk what trimming my land count from 23 to 22 did but man the mana gods were angry w/me tonight! lol
as far as what i could control, i think i inbred the deck too much vs other red decks. this week, there were only 2 red decks (one being me) compared to last week's 4. aethersphere harvester isn't too impressive when it isn't holding off phoenixes.
i swept my r3 opponent last week. i guess he brought a better game plan this week.

LEGACY - Ruby Storm & Burn
PAUPER - Zombies, Bogles, & Burn
test vs black aggro, 1-0.
he complained pre-match about not having enough answers to pro-black knights (besides his -2/-2 land.)
he kept a hand w/lots of removal but hardly any threats. eventually my threats overwhelmed him.
r1 vs G/r midrange, 1-2
SB +4 magma spray, -4 lightning strike (i want to kill his llanowar elves before he drops fatties.)
his deck seemed budgeted as he ran common rarity duals.
i won game 1. games 2 and 3, his sideboard shined (including that green fatty that gains you 5 life.)
drop.
in summary, my deck is outdated and time to be put out to pasture.
