On strategy red cards to splash for are Harnessed Lightning as a potential 4dmg removalspell and Rigging Runner as a potential 3/3 first strike for one red mana.
There are some more cards from kaladesh block which could work.
I'm no fan of Angrath but Glorybringer is great. Though hard on the manabase (as is). Been working to make Jund (centered around red) work and a third double cmc color is though and slows the deck down considerably.
Grixis suffers the same problem but allows for more stalling. The snek deck is not in it to stall imho.
Has anyone experimented with splashing red in this archetype?
I'm curious to try it out because I'd love to have access to cards like Angrath, the Flame-Chained and Glorybringer, even if just from the SB. I also think that the cycling lands (Canyon Slough / Sheltered Thicket) may add some extra value to explore w/ card draw, and the mana base may not be FUBAR thanks to these + Rootbound Crags.
Rhazzercom apparently tried this before the latest bannings. It looked interesting, but I never heard how it went. I haven't heard of people doing well with it. I have splashed R for answers to Glorybringer, but the best R cards (Chandra, Rekindling Phoenix, Glorybringer) have demanding color requirements and don't really synergize.
So, I'm not aware of successful experiments and would love to see what you come up with.
Was using sultai and went 4-2 in today's pptq. Met 5 grixis energy, 1 mardu. Won 4 grixis.
I think hostage taker still got a place. Dun quite fancy jadelight ranger but not much alternatives.
Round 1: Esper Control
He really could do enough to handle all the threats. He played a gearhulk with no targets and I had a contempt in hand. He died turn 6. Game 2 was more of game one. Him taking tons of damage and just drawing cards with nothing substantial to gain.
SB:
-4 Push
+4 Duress
-2 rishkar
+2 Journey to Eternity
Round 2: Artist Formally known as Rumunap Red
Game one he had me at 4 by turn 4 and ran outta gas. I slowly came back with an aethersphere harvester with 4 gearhulk counters on it. He'd deal 7, i'd gain 7 and i'd be safely at 1 life. he never drew any help. Game 2 I absolutely got smoked. Curved out and had me dead on turn 5 without any real hope. Game three i kept a hand with hashep oasis and aether hub. I only had one creature, branchwalker. I hit the land and was able to push two khenra's and curved out and smashed his face.
SB:
Not a darn thing, deck is already solid vs red
Round 3: my cousin playing merfolk
Game 1 he got me to 8 and i played 3 push, 2 chups and a contempt. Finally had a ballista with a snek. Game 2 i was able to get another push t1, snake turn 2, push and branchwalker turn 3 and chup turn 4. Turn 5 was a ballista with a blossoming defense up and he had nothing left of merit. He beat me last week for the win so i was a little more prepared.
SB:
+2 yahenni's expertise
-2 rishkar (i end up trading aggressively so he can't get a board set up so rishkar is a dude with no guys)
Round 4: Sultai Snake
Game 1 I had been on the offensive and smashing him. I was at 16 and he was at 9. I gearhulked on turn 5 and hit him for 8. I had a couple other guys out. Made two 5/5's and one 3/3. on his turn, he blossoming defensed his gearhulk that was a 6/6 already and hit me with hadana's climb that i forgot about. 16 flying. I coulda forced a block if i woulda made two 6/6 and left the 2/2 as is. He woulda been at 2 instead of 1 but had no creatures on the field. Bone head move i know. Game 2 i smashed him. T2 snake, it died, his t2 snake died. i played another and had branchwalker, rishkar, ballista push and gearhulk in my hand. was fast. Game 3 he had me on the ropes. I had lost my pushes to a lost legacy (weird i know) but i had board advantage. Hostage taker took my snake and left me with two smaller creatures that would only get in for 2 at best. I attacked and baited him into easy blocks. He did and i Yahenni's and cleared his board cause of that. Got my snake, played one with yahenni's and played a ballista ftw.
SB:
+2 yahenni's expertise
+1 naturalize (i casted this on his hadana's climb game two and he had a heroic intervention in hand and absolutely still won me the game. He saved that and lost two creatures next turn)
+2 gonti
-2 siphoner
-1 gearhulk
-1 skysoverign
-1 branchwalker
I'd have jadelight ranger in the main in place of the harvester but i dont wanna pay 15+ for a rare that will be 3-4 in a few weeks. He's not a must have for me.
Won $100 in store credit and bought 6 flooded strands and paid for next tuesday's tournament in advance.
@ A_E_I_Own_U: I was just curious. I'm looking at running a similar list today at an event. I know you mentioned running Harvesters for Jadelight due to not wanting to shell out the money for the Ranger. However, I was wondering if would swap it out if you did have them now or whether the Harvesters have been essential to your strategy. I was planning on Running Jadelight Instead but my list has no way to gain life and stabilize against aggro.
Ended up deciding on Sultai. Definitely got to see the power of Hadana's Climb. Came down the turn before I died against Grixis Energy, flipped after putting a third counter on a Jadelight which then flew in for a lethal 10.
Against merfolk, he was holding up MANA for what I was positive was an essence scatter for my three drop, played Hadana's Climb instead and put two counters on Constrictor. Crushed from there on in.
Out of three matches I only lost one and it was against spicy mono red Sunbird's invocation. Shouldn't have lost the second game, but I named Invocation for my single lost legacy with a naturalize in hand. Drew a second one too while he saw three Glorybringers and since I only had removal for 1 that was the game. I had thought about naming Glorybringers and in hindsight I really don't know why I didn't. In the first game he had two Invocations on the field which was absolutely brutal.
All in all a good night. Hadana's Climb was the truth just about whenever I saw it and Walking Ballista was a 3 for 1 in one game and played control in a game against merfolk.
Match 1: Merfolk Tribal - I won 2-0.
Game 1: He was able to build up a large board presence early, but the removal suite in this deck was able to deal with everything reliably. There was practically no removal on his end, so it played out like a race.
Game 2: Golden Demise absolutely wrecked him. He had to go shields down and empty his hand to make an attempt at a come back, which my regular removal took care of without any problems.
Match 2: UW Eternalize - I won 2-0.
Game 1: I was able to clear out his threats easily with push and ballistas, then closed the game with a pumped up Glint-Sleeve. Blossoming Defense saved my hide from Cast Out/Ixalan's binding on both Snake and Glint-Sleeve.
Game 2: I sideboarded in Silent Gravestones and Bronotdons, but never drew any. He got mana screwed which let me clean up his board and the rest of the game.
We played a casual Game 3 and his deck had some explosive starts. I think this deck could be a pretty real threat for us given the Cast Out/Ixalan's binding disruptions. Sunscourged Champions + Anointed Procession brought him back from the brink, followed by Pouncers that I just could not answer the bonus tokens.
Match 3: UW Heroic - I lost 2-1.
Game 1: Lost... Adanto Vanguard did major work for him. I tried to fatal push it twice and he paided the cost. Ultimately I lost b/c of mana screw - I was 1 short of being able to drop Vraska's Contept. He had emptied his hand and was shields down, but the cards were not in my favor.
Game 2: Sideboarded in the extra Fatal Push, Thrashing Brontodon, and Golden Demise. He played a similar game plan, but Golden Demise cleared his board and he had almost entirely dumped his hand. Next turn dropped Gearhulk on my Snake and Glint-Sleeve, and he was unable to come back from that.
Game 3: I lost it because I could not draw my answers, for the most part. I was able to clear his board, but was able to flood the board and exhaust my removal.
I honestly think we have the advantage in this match up. It can have some explosive starts, but we have so much removal and flexibility available to us post/pre-board we'll likely be able to out-grind them.
Match 4: R/W Sunbird's Approach - I won 2-1.
Game 1: I lost it b/c he had so much removal. Between Settle, Fumigate, and Abrade, I couldn't keep my threats on the board.
Game 2: Sideboarded in everything but Fatal Push and Golden Demise. Duress let me clear out the board wipes, and Heroic Intervention let me tank his Fumigate before a big attack. This match up was way in my favor.
Game 3: Played out very similar to Game 2, but Cast Out and Ixalan's Binding were both annoying this game. Ultimately, Brontodons let me bounce back my Snake multiple times and keep boosting my remaining board.
Also, there was 1 person who went 4-0 who was also playing G/B Snake. I didn't have a chance to chat with him about his list, but it looks like it was largely similar to the common lists.
I think I am going to cut Rishkar. He was largely a dead draw for me most games, despite the synergies. Instead, I think I will run 2x Deathgorge Scavengers and replace the Silent Gravestones with another 2x. This will give me more survivability in some match ups, plus graveyard hate on a stick to deal with Eternalize as well as other popular threats like Phoenixes, Scarab Gods, and GPG.
Hadana's Climb is so good! It's seriously one of my favourite cards to come out in a long time, so I'm glad to see other people are getting some good use from it.
Went terrible as usual.
Lost to Grixis control, never stood a chance. Lost to mono black 1-2, he got mana screwed in the round I won and I had a perfect start so it was over quick. Barely won 2-1 over Esper control. I won round three because he got mana screwed. And then finally lost to red/black pirates.
Two things on my mind after last night (other than I suck)
1: I feel like I need 4 blossoming defense because everybody has 10 removal spells or something in the deck.
2: I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hate Foul Orchard.... **** that card seriously.... It's so ******* slow I can't take it.
(3: Gonti is pure value)
Getting pretty damn tired of losing all the time. Three fnm's where I've done nothing but get my ass handed to me. I think I'm going to play Grixis midrange next week. I'm going to need a break from fnm if that goes bad too, I have enough defeats in my life as it is, don't need to add to it hehe.
Sorry to hear to hear about your frustrations. Let us know if we can help with any feedback! I went back looking for you decklist, and you posted this several weeks back:
Is this the deck you are playing (with some minor tweaks, since you mentioned you dropped one Ranger)? Would you like any feedback on your deck construction specifically for your meta? Not saying I have the answers, but it's always good to go back and review deck construction choices IMO.
Thanks and sorry for taking so long to reply. Been pretty busy since last week.
I took the blue splash out a while ago. This is what I ran last week.
I've seen a few lists without Glint Sleeve Siphoners doing well lately, so I'm thinking about swapping them out for two more Blossoming Defense one more Jadelight Ranger and one more Verdurous Gearhulk, so the entire deck is only instant value cards that don't require any setting up (other than the snakes of course)
I never really get to draw cards with the Glint Sleeves that often anyway. It's awesome when I get to do it and maybe get one or two attacks in, but they just have a huge target on them as soon as they land on the field because everybody knows they keep the juices flowing. They also take a bit to set up before you can get the card draws going, especially if you're on the draw.
I will lose the occasional card draw, but I'm kinda thinking with all those explore triggers, I can at least filter my draws.
Either that or take out the two Rishkar for two more Blossoming Defense. I just feel like having the full playset is crucial. There's just so much removal it's crazy.
Sideboard was alright. I managed to get four gearhulk counters on a Aethersphere harvester for massive lifegain which was pretty rad. I would like two Vraska's against more grindy games and maybe 1 Lost Legacy just in case I go up against an approach deck, but I haven't seen any appraoch decks at my local store in a long time.
It's either one of those two options or go Grixis Energy Midrange.
Yea, sorry about that. I haven't been on here in a while. I would probably just leave the rangers out at this point. My meta is all aggro and they just dont do much for me (since i already run 24 land, i dont get screwed often at all)
Not having Rangers worked pretty well for you hehe, I can see adding Aethersphere harvesters and Skysoverign main board seems pretty rad, I've just had a lot of success with them and I'd feel bad leaving them out. I see what you mean though.
My meta is very aggro too, but I saw a lot of control decks last time for the first time in ages. I don't really see many scenarios where a couple of harvesters and Skysovereign don't end up kicking ass.
Well, after winning for 3 weeks in a row, people are starting to main-board against G/B snake. Any thoughts on something to spice it up a bit? Mostly an aggro LGS but a couple grindy decks too.
Hello. Have you considered running Gifted Aetherborn? I'm currently running Sultai, but if I was just G/B I would probably have access to them at least in the sideboard. Other than that, I've some success testing Kitesail Freebooter as well. My LGS is all over the place, Control, Aggro, Cats and Ramp.
What i'm mostly seeing is a lot of main deck sweltering suns and main deck yahenni's. I was thinking about putting 1x torment of halefire in the deck somewhere

I dont have trouble with aggro. I have like 16 2 drops so it usually never gets outta hand.

If it's the more controlling strategies that are giving you trouble, I recommend up to 2 Lifecrafter's Bestiary for the sideboard. I didn't see any in your most recently posted list. Do remember your free scries (I always forget when I haven't played the card for a while).
Heroic Intervention is obviously good against Sweltering Suns, but useless against Yahenni's Expertise. Not to mention that we tap out to build a board, so holding up 2 mana for a reactive spell can be unfeasible.
Splashing U for Spell Pierce and/or Negate seems like a bigger change than you want.

Yea, the bestiary is awesome against control. I do forgot about it alot too tho! haha. I took it out cause I rarely play vs control but it may find its way back in. Heroic Intervention is hard to keep mana up for.
Tonight i know i'll play against the following:
2x Red Deck wins
1x R/G dinos
1x Marionette control
1x Merfolk
3x Snake variants
2x Vehicles
I almost always win vs red/vehicles and the dinos. The MM control can get me if i dont have multiple Contempts. Merfolk is my cousin and i sometimes make play mistakes vs him cause i wanna crush him badly
Other snake matchups usually die to my 3x chups in main
I just wanted something spicey that no one would expect but would still be a good card
What i'm mostly seeing is a lot of main deck sweltering suns and main deck yahenni's. I was thinking about putting 1x torment of halefire in the deck somewhere
what about Supernatural Stamina? Combat trick, Sweltering Suns protection, and lots of fun with Chupacabra
I've been testing the B/G version with Deathgorge Scavenger instead of Rishkar. So far I think it's a good move, as it has some more utility in virtually all board states except for the nut draw.
I originally was thinking of running 2 MB and 2 SB (in place of 2x Silent Gravestone), but I now think that may be unnecessary. I'm not seeing all that much graveyard shenanigans in my local meta (virtually no Scarab Gods or GPG the last 2 FNMs) outside of the occasional Eternalize creature or deck. I'm torn between removing both Gravestones from the SB in favor of adding 2x Vraska, Relic Seeker to break the mirror or adding in something like a Liliana, Death's Majesty or Demon of Dark Schemes to combat removal heavy decks.
Vraska is quite good in a reasonable number of situations. Nissa, Vital Force is less versatile, but spicy. You already have Bestiaries, which I swear by.

What scenarios do you side the Beastiary in? Only against control? or do you like it against other types of decks too?
To echo what hoser2 said, Bestiary is great against control and grinding decks. Obviously terrible move against aggro. In my last FNM, Bestiary won me the game against RW Approach. He cast a regular Approach (no sunbird in play) to go back up to 9 life and my board could only deal 5. I had 2 Bestiary in play and that let me scry into a Walking Ballista for the remainder of the damage.
Typically I will side out 2x Glint-Sleeve for Bestiary, especially if they die too quickly game 1.
There are some more cards from kaladesh block which could work.
