Hi all. I'm just getting back into magic after a LONG hiatus (I haven't played since Arabian Nights when I was a kid). I have been reading a lot to trying and get up to speed, but one thing I'm wondering that I can't seem to find is this:
When the standard rotation happens, are there cards that have been commonly reprinted, and can you continue to use the other versions of that card? For example, I have Luminous Bonds from a couple sets...is that sort of a mainstay that keeps getting reprinted? If this is the case, what are The typical cards that stick around?
To be honest, it varies. Core sets were discontinued for a time. We've only had 1 in recent years. Those were the sets where cards were more likely to see a reprint. With traditional sets, they tend to keep the cards on flavor with the given theme of that set/block. You'll get functional reprints (a card that is basically Luminus Bonds but with a different name), but dont usually see exact copies.
So basically, the odds of old cards you currently have being part of Standard after rotation is very low
You can use old versions of a legal card. Getting new copies from the latest set is not necessary.
Predicting the cards that will be reprinted is going to be very difficult. Some cards appear in multiple core sets in a row, some disappear quickly, and others disappear only to return after a time. In many ways, there is no telling which is which.
A few thoughts:
Keyword mechanics from nonCore sets are unlikely to come back. Or keywords that have fallen out of favor are also unlikely (Protection, Regeneration)
The more clean and simple the name, the more likely they are to reuse it. Names that reference specific characters or locations are more limited in being reprinted.
gatherer.wizards.com is a good resource to see what is in standard and if it was printed in an earlier set(s) too, you click advanced then Standard for format and you can see everything currently in standard. Then there is https://magic.wizards.com/en/content/standard-formats-magic-gathering that shows which sets are currently in standard, with Magic 2019 through Ixalan rotating out in the Fall whenever that new set comes out (Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Alliance, War of the Spark, Magic 2020, new Fall set would be Standard legal sets).
There are a few cards not in packs that are in standard as well such as the Welcome to Magic newcomer decks sometimes have something like Shivan Dragon or whatever in them as well as buy a box promos.
I was also informed by my FLGS that at least one copy in standard rotation has to be in the deck. Things that are not always in rotation like Llanowar Elves would be a good example of that.

I am not entirely sure what you are trying to say, but any way I interpret it makes this statement sound wrong. I think you are saying that at least one card must be from a the set printed in Standard so if you have 4 Llanowar Elves, at least one needs to be from M20. Which is incorrect. If you have 4 Llanowar Elves in your deck, all 4 can be from Beta. None of them must be from the set that is actually in Standard.

That is what I was saying, thanks for the correction. I guess the LGS was misinformed.

Beyond that, good luck guessing.
