I feel like Simic is always set up for a greedy, mana efficient (yet slow) mechanic. Merfolk seemed like a reasonably priced budget, standard deck after Ixalan, even more so in Dominaria after Merfolk Trickster and gaining access to check lands. The problem before was just mono red domination in standard with mana efficient cards like Soul Scar Mage, Shock, Sweltering Sun, Magma Spray... then in Black Fatal Push, not to mention Walking Ballista. A lot of my fellow FNM pals say, “well the shock lands aren’t in yet/in next Ravnica Simic will get more support..”
Frankly, I think that’s bull*****. The Simic Merfolk deck where it seems solid has such a hard time dealing with the simplest *****. I understand having a weakness against flyers, but they also suffer way to much against ANY removal period, even post rotation. Shock, dead. Lightning, dead. Fiery Cannonade, dead. Ritual of Soot, dead. Golden Demise Dead, Moment of Craving, dead. Charwhirler, dead.
Even the protection available with Dive Down, the 3 drop Hexproof Fog (forget the name)... it can simply be beaten on the stack with the rediculous amount of cheap removal.
Simic needs a two drop Split-Second Uncounterable Fog effect or something, because it’s kind of bogus to give all the tools for a budget deck only to make it 100% unviable. Simic is always trashed on. Please make it viable.
Simic has tools to fight everything. Against red we have hexproof tokens. Against green we have sleep. Control, spell pierce and spam dont main dive down, main pierce
We go less wide but bigger than token decks then just sleep their board.
And just save trickster for ***** like Phoenix ez
Imo at the moment it's 100% a deep-rooted waters deck
Vampires and Merfolks got hitted incredibly hard by GCW in Dominaria as they both play around 1/1 tokens. There was definitely some miss calculation regarding that card. I think they expected the strong enrage creatures like Ripjaw Raptor to keep that card in check but for some reason, it just didn't happen.
And don't underestimate the importance of the mana base for these decks. Merfolk wants to play G drops and a UU merfolk trickster, and that it's just not viable right now. Simic is the homeguild for merfolks in Ravnica and Orzhov has some vampires as well. I strongly believe both those decks will get a massive push in the next expansion.
It's completely viable.. trickster is not a turn 2 play. Even if it is my only turn 2 play I'm not using it. It's there to ambush things like Phoenix and stop ghalta from attacking

Lots of saltiness there. Outbeside the rant, simic doesn't have Breeding Pool. Very few people are willing to build a deck around it. It still has tools to be viable just have to play it a bit differently. Kumena is still an interesting card, but I think kopola is just no good.
and the card you are talking about is Blinding Fog. Also yea there is a lot of removal...but blue has tons of counters and tempo magic...should be able to come up with something for that.
