Standards so open right now; anything and everything is "possible";
i wanted to build like a BWG rock deck to get back on the train (i used to grind wayyy back; when damge used to stack and JSS/Grand Prix Trials/PTQs were a thing (where its like, 8 rounds, top 8, one winner, 1 tournament)
So the card: Nightmares Thirst
This card has so much potential with so many cards in standard... like Knight of Autumn is one, but there's so many sleeper "versions" of archetypes that can easily play this as answer to a lot of the x/1 1 drops (lan. elves, the other 1/1 who gets bigger if another creature bigger then him comes into player, that red 1/1 elemental that red dark rituals at 3 counters, the 0/1 when u have to 2-1 for the 4/3 bird in all the red decks, the random blue aggro decks are just some off the top of my head)
whats your thoughts? please share, open to her from all walks of spell casters
open to all suggestions/thoughts on standard in general!
for fun but also to measure the success of attempting to break it, i got 96 copies of this card literally an hour ago cause it was like 30 bucks. very confident this could be a "path to exile" type uncommon. and if not, well hey, it was just 30bucks.
In general Fungal Infection is going to be a better card. In a dedicated lifegain deck Nightmare's Thirst is certainly a reasonable card, but the dedicated life gain decks are all currently pretty mediocre. It may pick up some ability when the Orzhov guild is released though as they tend to do the life gain act.
The problem is that Nightmare's Thirst isn't really a 1 mana removal spell, unless the target has 1 toughness. For bigger targets, it's 1 mana plus some other lifegain event, which may or may not cost additional mana. Even if you rely on lifelink creatures, the spell isn't potent until after combat. Fatal Push, by contrast, hits bigger targets than Thirst by default, and it has tons of ways to enable larger targets for zero mana. Path to Exile, which you cite as a comparison, has no size restrictions whatsoever.
So the best way to abuse it is as a 4 mana spell that requires having creatures already on board? The term "win-more" gets bandied about a lot, but this requires board advantage and card advantage to cast removal (and post combat at that.)
Fungal Infection is a really good 1 mana removal spell, as it trades against 2 toughness , produces a blocker to potentially gain life, or just make a token that can hilariously win the game over a course of 20 turns (yes that ***** happens), especially with planeswalkers in the format, the ability to get a token and attack that is really good.
But the format has too many creatures with way more toughness and insane crap that returns from the graveyard and all that.
Necrotic Wound does quite some work in a self mill golgari deck and it even exiles the creature, which is huge against the Rekindling Phoenix (one of the most stupid color breaking cards ever printed).
Dead Weight is also "ok" and it at least shrinks some stuff if it doesnt kill it. But its also terrible in constructed, as there is way too much 3 toughness stuff.
----
But all of these removals are still pretty terrible, as they all come with restrictions and demands that just make them not flexible enough against all the possible threats.
