Yeah Red got hard to kill creatures (thanks to recursion or invulnerability) got the strong fliers while keeping their exclusive access to Haste and Direct Damage. White would kill to be able to cheat into other sections of the Color Pie like Red got.
How I see it red is defined by Courier and their amazing 4 and 5 drops. Chainwhirler just happens to fit into its weak 3 CMC slot that doesn't have anything that great. With it as its only good choice its effect just happens to warp the meta.
Red just needs other 3 CMC creatures that can fit the spot, but that just means giving it more ammo lol.
It's unfortunate that it had to happen the same time that Hazoret was stretching the Vraska's Contempt style cards.
Yeah, I get so torn on that card because when they unveiled a playable phoenix I basically cheered, since I was a big fan of phoenix cards, even the horrible ones. It's just the meta it got thrown into made it part of the problem. At least we only got ~120 days until rotation!

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
Esper control will probably balance things out, it's just that the manabase needs some work in the deck to help make it more consistent. It's got access to all the tools it needs to shut down red and has a better game plan late game with The Scarab God + Torrential Gearhulk. It's the deck I'd pilot right now if I was playing standard to any serious degree.
The reality is Red decks had two things going for them going into the Pro-tour:
1) a lot of the support for the deck was reprinted in the challenger decks, which made the archetype a lot more accessible than some of the others out there.
2) It's not very hard to build a competitive mid-range black/red deck or red aggro deck right now. The cards that were good in the past are still just as good today, and until Bomat Courier goes away along with a lot of the value cards the deck is just going to be very prolific.

They've been trying to make a constructed playable 4-5 mana phoenix for uh. A long time.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the real force shaping the format isn't the red decks: It's Lyra Dawnbringer. That one card is what made most of the teams go for Unlicensed Disintegration, because leaving a Lyra unanswered is a big problem. That's also why Goblin Chainwhirler was everywhere, because Llanowar Elves are one of the key pieces of ramp next to Servant of the Conduit that enable decks to bring down Steel leaf Champion and Lyra Dawnbringer early.
