So I'm very unfamiliar with the standard meta. I mainly just play legacy with some limited scattered in as well. I'm looking to put together a standard deck on MTGO. I was thinking UB Mill since I already own the Watery Graves, and because it looked pretty fun to me. I'm not sure if its thought to be viable, though. I see some aggro mill in the development subforum. I was thinking something more along the lines of Balastrude Spy, Consuming Abberation, Undercity Informer (combined with Mortis Strider), Mind Grind, Whispering Madness, Jace, etc. Don't have an exact list worked out yet, just a general idea. Just wondering if this is thought to be viable or not before I try putting it together.
Hello all. I’ve been playing for around a year, started like a month or two before new phyrexia cycled out. I’ve ran various decks throughout my career, starting by just slapping together some cards that looked like they did things that helped each other.
My first serious deck was a very aggressive GW Humans deck with cards that synergized really well, like Mayor of Avabruck, Champion, Hamlet Captain, etc. I stopped for a bit after Avacyn came out, and I’ve been looking to get back in. Right now I’m running a heavily proxied white humans deck with splash blue. They’re not super-expensive cards, I haven’t gotten around to buying them yet.
But... I’m kinda tiring of humans. Sure, they’re a great tribe and all, and win a lot, but I want to try something different. I still want to stay with an agro deck that can goldfish a win by, say... Turn 4 or 5, but I don’t really wanna go the super cliché Thragtusk/Geist/whatever route though... So I’ve been looking around and mono red seems like a pretty good choice. I have a deck list made, which I can post if anyone wants to see it. But my point is this: in the current meta, what will get more wins: humans, mono red (I’m fine if its Rakdos or Izzet too, just primarily red), or something else?
Note: I’m still a high school student, so my budget is pretty limited. I could maaaybe scrape together $50, then sell/trade the cards in my humans deck for around 35 bucks. So finances are definitely a concern, which kinda knocks out cards like Thundermaw.
So I'm tossing up between either an Esper control deck or a UWR tempo/control, simply because I'm sick of being controlled by Thragtusk as his 'you need to play 4 of me' attitude.
I'm looking to find a combo deck in standard. I know about the Burn at the Stake combo deck, but I was wondering if there are any others? Thank you.
There's RUG Deadeye Navigator+Zealous Conscripts+Gilded Lotus Combo that I play. It's midrange/combo of some sort, with Huntmaster of the Fells and Deathrite Shaman to help you out.
You get your cards via Forbidden Alchemy and ramp with Farseek. Fun deck, but might have issues given the current aggro meta.
hes not in even one deck that won the MTGO premier event yesterday (link)yet hes "the best card in standard"? Still a stretch if you ask me.. a pretty big one
That's like saying Jace wasn't the best card in standard because Vampires won.
A random mtgo event doesn't disprove what I'm saying.
He was in 50% of the decks of the top 16 of last weeks SCG Open, as a 4 of in each. In at least 4 different archetypes.

You say a random event doesnt prove anything, then you talk about a random SCG event to prove your point..
Im not saying its not a good card, but to state its the best card in the format as a fact is a reach no matter what you think. Its clearly a better card then Thragtusk right? Sphinx? Restoration Angel? Huntmaster? Thundermaw?
A random magic online event is different from a several hundred person event with a more established metagame.
Yes? Of those cards you named, Restoration Angel is probably the only one even close.
Considering the cards you named, you're talking about a month old meta-game, I'm talking about right now.

Ok so a MTGO Premium event from yesterday is now one month old meta.
They're still old decks. That's my point. The fact that you even mention Thragtusk, when it hasn't been a dominant card for at least 2-3 weeks says plenty. Revelation decks are few and far between anymore with the influx of the aggressive base Red decks. There's a standard pro tour this weekend, that's what I'm talking about. Reckoner is going to be the dominant card. If you've played any real magic against quality opponents or read any articles, or playtest videos over the last week you'd already know this.
Hi. I'm a legacy/modern player looking to get into standard. I play combo decks and really can't find something I'd love to play in standard. I was thinking maybe reanimator? I really love to play combo because it is something that people assume is really straightforward, but has many nuances.
I like it when my opponent tries to stop my combo, but then I go off anyway.

I think you might wanna take a look at the recent "The Aristocrats" deck. It's not a true combo deck persay, but it can certainly be tuned to be one. Also, it's a very left field deck that I don't think many players are expecting or have a solid plan to combat...
That, and you know what they say. If Wizards started shipping $100 bills in boosters tomorrow, people would scream and cry and whine that they were folded the wrong way.

A deck I've been having reasonable success ( a few 3-1's) with at FNM is more or less a 'standard storm' variant. Basically the deck spits out tokens, uses Burn at the Stake or Devil's Play as a finisher, and makes use of Faithless Looting, Reforge the Soul, and Past in Flames as a draw/dig engine; I've gone off and filtered through about half my deck in a turn, with multiple paths to victory. As a bonus, even if they counter your Devil's Play you typically have abundant mana to simply flash it back for lethal regardless, barring Dissipate, Syncopate, or Rest in Peace
Hey everyone, I am a returning magic player (quit about 3 years ago). I have been watching tournies and reading the forums a lot, but I am really stuck on what to play! I loved watching the naya deck that was shredding, but I am not sure. I have no card base anymore at all, so everything will have to be bought fresh, and I have set aside 500 bucks to get into it (just to give an idea whether or not a deck would be totally ruled out based on that.)
Going to Grand Prix Bologna on Saturday. Having all cards in standard available, what's the current tier one to play?
I like Humanimator (mill) or Saito Naya.

I'm trying to get a deck together in every format so I can play more. I'm a returning player and have no staples. I enjoy playing control and sometimes aggro, I like midrange too lol (I play Affinity in Modern). I'd like a deck recommendation that won't break the bank but please god no RDW. Thanks!
I'm a former highly competitive player returning to play from a long, long hiatus. I sold my P9 back at the millennium, and hung up my Level III judgehood back when Level III still meant something. I formerly preferred to play control decks (my earliest tournament wins were recorded when Balance ruled the world), and overall enjoy "thinking" decks over simply turning my creatures sideways every turn.
While my skills are a bit rusty and some card interactions are still foreign to me on my return, I still consider myself a good player, solid mechanical thinker and game theorist. [That is, I know when or when not to chump-block.] I'd be comfortable playing a deck of any skill level, as I've got good time to practice it and good play partners. Although I had most of my early PT success in limited events, I still consider myself better than average at constructed.
It is unlikely that I will play my deck outside of a single LGS, the environment there is competitive (even during FNM play), and it hosts regional-level events on a good schedule.
Some complications: Now that I've returned, I enjoy a reputation for playing oddball decks -- a reputation that I'd like to maintain. The metagame at my LGS is complex. There are a TON of RG decks, both in agro and midrange, enough of "combo" decks (reanimator, 'science) to be worth noting, a few playing chasing the deck of the week (Aristocrats, mostly-mono-black), and a core of players playing heavy control (7 wipes, souls). In short, it's a fair slice of what's actually out there.
The only good news, perhaps, is that I have a functionally unlimited budget for standard. I already have a complete playset of all the lands as well as most staple cards. I'm older, a professional, and my job affords me all of the cards I'd like. If it takes four Ozbedats, four Caverns and four Hellkites, then so be it.
So, I say, give me something unique or with a twist. American Tempo with some Assembles? Black-something control with Desecration Demons? Another take on Delver? If it's oddball and interesting, and I can go 70% wins with it, I'll play it. Heck, I'd play Turbo Fog again if I thought I could finish matches in 50 minutes.

Well, if you enjoy playing decks that aren't just netdecked by everyone, my suggestion would be perhaps a Grixis control deck. Most control decks run white for Sphinx's Revelation, but playing red instead of white can open up things like Olivia Voldaren and Slaughter Games (a powerhouse killer against many decks, especially other control when you name Sphinx's Revelation and put them on the same level as you, except then you'll have more card draw than them because you got it from cards other than sphinx's rev.)
Also, cards like Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and Nicol Bolas can be a win-con by themselves if they resolve and you get to untap with them. I've been playing a pretty standard Esper Control deck for awhile now, and I'm just starting to make a home-brewed Grixis control -- and i really like it. You don't see very many Grixis decks and they are surprisingly effective. Stuff a ton of cheap removal in it, some card draw like Think Twice, Forbidden Alchemy, and perhaps Staff of Nin for late game advantage. Barter in Blood or even Mutilate (if you run enough swamps) are alternatives to Supreme Verdict. Run some nephalia drownyards for guaranteed win-con in grindy games (which are inevitable when playing control decks).
It seems like the deck would fit into your desire to play control and you could put your own twist on the deck. The cards mentioned above are basically a starting shell for the deck, and you could build upon that with whatever suits your fancy. If it's something that would interest you and you'd maybe like help with further suggestions for it, feel free to PM me.

I feel the need to use Thragtusk because I've got a playset.
Other cards that I've got and think could definitely be used are:
Restoration Angel (a playset)
Bonfire of the Damned, (playset)
Snapcaster Mage, (playset)
Huntmaster of the Fells (playset)
2 Thundermaw Hellkites
2 Tamiyo, the Moon Sage
2 Obzedat, Ghost Council
2 Liliana, the Veil Cursed
If anyone's got some good ideas about what's competitive or what would be good to make with those cards, I'd be very grateful for your help!
Cheers
So far it seems the shells can work pretty similarly, as both can pack things like Geist of Saint Traft, Sphinx's Revelation, Snapcaster Mage, Restoration Angel and all the board wipes like Terminus and Supreme Verdict. The only real difference comes in the form of a handful of cards, those being for Esper:
And then you've even got Blood Artist who can be a crippling force.
Then with UWR you have:
There's other differences too of course that come with playing the different types of decks (Delver of Secrets, Talrand, Sky Summoner, Blind Obedience.
But which do you think is the stronger out of the two? Which is more effective in this Standard?

Not sure how competitive you're looking to be, but I've been brewing more-or-less a standard eggs variant. Basically, Faith's Reward, Immortal Servitude along with Dual Casting and some shenanigans via Blood Artist and a sac outlet such as Bloodthrone Vampire.
There's a thread somewhere called something along the lines of "Eggs in Standard" in the Standard Deck Creation forum if you want to take a look.
