Times have changed; it's very different now in the metagame. Pyreheart is pretty key in giving the deck longevity that I was using Devil's Play for. I do miss Stonewright, but I like the more aggressive draws with Cackler.

Former MTG player comming back to the game after 15 years. The game has changed a lot since I last played, and while i've taken a few days to troll this forum, and WotC's website on new rules and such i've tried to prepare myself the best that I could. Ive purchased several booster boxes to get me start off with some cards and a decent ammount of trading fodder (atleast thats what we called it back then).
1 Innastrad
1 Avacyn Restored
1 Dark Acension
2 Core 2013
4 Ravnica (was told this was the set to buy the most of since it held the best power cards)
So now that i've gotten that out of the way after a day of sorting everything out ive come to the bridge of just finding out what to play. Ive read up on a ton of standard decks (trying to start myself off on the right foot) and ive come to the conclusion that the games changed so much im just a little overwhelmed.
The game looks alot more aggressive than it was in my early years, and the domminance of multi colored decks (I really dont see many mono decks on these forums, most 2-3 colors). With that said, how should i start off dipping my toes in the water? The only play im going to get is FNM's so i dont want to look like a major chump, so im trying to get my ducks in a row before i start attending.
Any help/suggestions would be fantastic, as im sure some very good players troll this forum.
Having recently completed my first ever EDH deck, I am thinking about going back to standard. I currently have the core for a BW tokens deck but it isn't appealing to me. In modern, I play Soul Sisters but I do not think there is something equivalent in standard.
Any suggestions? My budget is 150$ but I already own an entire set of dual lands (Innistrad, M13 and RtR including 4 caverns). My LGS also has awesome deals when trading.
So, tomorrow there is a big tournament. Top prize is a sealed commander's arsenal. I borrowed a Junk Tokens deck from a friend earlier in the week for it, and practiced the hell out of it on cockatrice, winning 2 out of every 3 matches. I decided to play it at FNM, feeling pretty confident, and went 1-3-1. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do now. Should I continue with the original plan, or play dirty red instead?
Well, its not really FNM, its ThursdayNM, and its at a very competitive LGS, that I have not gone to yet, so I don't know much about the meta. I have heard its usually around 30-40 ppl. From what I can guess, I am assuming i will be seeing lots of Mono Red, because its cheap (financially), BR Zombies because its been winning, and control variants. I have access to these decks. Mono R, UWR midrange, or Naya. Any ideas! I am leaning towards UWR, but i also like Mono Red alot. And Naya is fun cuz you have great creatures and Bonfire.
I believe that Jund is a strong deck right now as well. Last FNM I went to also had a lot of green-white, sometimes with blue. Rancor, Restoration Angel and Geist of Saint Traft showed up a lot.

I have gone through plenty of thinking over what I want to play. A GW midrange deck with thragtusks, restoration angels, and armada wurms seems to be a good option, since it could use pilgrims and a. elves for early drops. One of my other options is a GB aggro zombie deck, with gravecrawlers, lotleth trolls, and diregaf ghouls. Which decks are seeing the most play right now?

The decks that are seeing the most play depend on your meta. But, in general, it's something like this...
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
5-0'd with naya. Its soooooooo resilient and strong vs wide metas.
Make sure u run thundermaws!
Aggro? Four bonfires say your a sad panda sir. Your guys just got burnt.

redthirst is redthirst, fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He was the leader of the Fires of Salvation, the only clan I'm aware of to get modded off the forums so hard they made their own forums.
Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.
+1 UWR if built as a flash variant. It's better against the aggro archetypes than most decks (if you build it like Ryan Hipp), and it can still get enough damage underneath control.
Otherwise Naya.

So I'm traveling currently and only have a small portion of my collection with me. The meta is entirely unknown however after visiting the shop I was able to find a few things out. The "magic guy" wasn't in the store when I went to find out about FNM but I was able to look at what they sold and there was very few high end standard cards and what they did have was heavily discounted (Geist of Saint Traft at $20 for example), most of what they dealt in was Legacy with a little bit of Modern so I don't think there's a whole lot of standard demand at this store.
My deck options are B/R Zombies, U/W Flash, U/W/R Flash, or U/W Tapout. I'm most comfortable playing B/R Zombies but U/W Flash is better assuming there's no Cavern of Souls and a small if any Zombies presence. U/W Tapout has a better game against aggro than Flash but worse against anything else. The stores main standard attraction was a binder loaded with planeswalkers so I get the feeling they're quite popular around here. I think against planeswalkers I would want flash over tapout.
Given this extremely limited amount of information, what would you play?
It depends on the meta. If it's smaller, I'd go with Zombies if you know how to use it. Otherwise, I'd just stick with U/W flash; the deck isn't wrecked by an opposing Terminus.

The meta is pretty unknown other than I don't think it's all that competitive. U/W is pretty bad against lots of RDW and Zombies decks. I'm leaning towards zombies right now but I'll bring the other deck with me so I can swap before we start if it seems like the right move.
Basically vs control I use hellkites + cavern and kessig usually = sadpanda
Control is the toughest it just comes down to angels and thrags and perfect plays. But hellkite uncounterable is tough for control. Plus when they wrath them I use angel of serenity and they come right back into mybhand.
Running 4 caverns is rough for them. At one point I had 3 caverns, beast, angel, dragon. Dude didn't know what to do lol.
I've been working on these decks for a while and I'm having difficulty picking one for Standard Night on Tuesday. My meta has a variety of decks, usually 2 GW, 2-3 RB, 1-3 control (various builds such as WU, WUG, GU), and some random home brews. Which deck do you think is the most competitive?
Countermagic is the smell before rain, the sun on the horizon and the chocolate chips in my mint chocolate chip ice cream. It's the first time I saw a woman naked and the first time I smelled perfume. It's that feeling you get when you know you're right.
But most of all; it's the feeling of playing Magic
I'm having trouble deciding what to do with my deck. Right now I'm playing Grixis control, and having a rough time against anything aggro. I'm debating dropping red and switching to an Esper control build. Or adding white to the current build.
Opinions?
Is 4 color-control too clunky?
How about Esper v. Grixis control? I feel like white would address the major problems I'm having with Grixis, (lack of life gain, and sweepers)...
